Were the bad guys a DC reference? I was sort of confused, because I felt I should know their employer, but didn't.

Liberty's Edge

The one character to me that really feels off to me is Alfred. He has always been very proper British with that upper class accent not the one he is using in the show. Also he is just too rough around the edges for my taste. Even if he is the son of Dr. Who.

I think this is Alfred not too long out of the military. I think as the show goes on there'll be some sandpaper taken to the rough edges.

Episode 2 was much better than episode 1.

They sold it to channel 9 in Australia who also have arrow. Maybe a sign its paid for to season 2.

it's not a Whedon show, so it should be safe.

Dude, you have issues.

What? I'm just stating facts. Fox did cancel Firefly after only one season despite fan outcry and support. It lead to a fervent belief that Fox hated whedon or something, considering some of the utterly awful shows that received second and even third seasons.

I also found it funny that Bruce was listening to rock music.

Sovereign Court

Firefly didn't have enough of an audience while it aired. Also it wasn't aired in order and people got confused.

Where the 2 bad guys robots? I liked the second episode better than the first

Also what up with penguin and the future predictions? Does he have any kind of abilities? Not big into the comics but not remembering him this crazy.

Sovereign Court

he's prob some kind of genius on some level... "I'm clever that way" he said to Gordon, on the subject of predicting organized criminals' moves...

The "Dollmaker" that they work for (referenced one time in a single scene) was the villian in a Catwoman arc from near the beginning of the New 52 era in the comics. The plot of that arc also revolved around homeless kids going missing aroudn Gotham and no one caring.

I won't be surprised if this isn't a trend through the series--using relatively unknown, used-once-and-forgotten villians from the comics as the "villian of the week."

Kids going missing almost sounds like one of the things they used with the Circus gang in the Batman Returns movie from the 90s.

Dollmaker was also in an Arrow season 2 episode, portrayed as a serial killer of young women (but not children).

On a different note, I just realized that penguins consume fish - which isn't a good sign for Fish Mooney's longevity.

A good one this week. It's shaping up nicely. Awesome cliffhanger.

I liked last night's episode also. I particularly liked that they're setting Gordon up to be anti-vigilante, which means his eventual transition to working with and supporting Batman will be quite the change for him.

I'm really enjoying it so far. Loving Sean Pertwee as Alfred and Donal Logue as Bullock. The guy who plays Penguin as well... damn. Fantastic. Watching his rise is probably going to end up being my favourite part of the series.

I got to say I disagree...

So far I have been mostly disappointed in Gotham. It really feels like they can't decide if they are emulating Nolan or Adam West in the storylines, and instead they are a weird blend of both.

I guess I wanted to see a gritty Gotham police procedural...and that is not what I am getting.

Scarab Sages

I think the actor playing Edward Nygma is going to make a scary Riddler some day.

Best case: I could see this series running for about five years, as Bruce begins his training, and Gordon rises through the ranks. Once Bruce reaches 18, they can transition into a reboot movie series, starting with Year One.

They did pack a lot of villains-to-be into the pilot. If they stick with this group for a while, and introduce others slowly (a handful per season), it might work. If they try to introduce a different future member of the rogues gallery every week, I'm afraid they'll overload the audience by the end of this season.

See I'm not familiar with much to do with Batman prior to the first Burton film (which came out the year I was born). So for me, Batman is those films, the Nolan trilogy, the Arkham games and the very occasional comic I've read (for the most part I don't read Marvel or DC, my taste in comics runs to Vertigo and a lot of independent stuff. Not all super serious, I love Atomic Robo and a lot of other jokey stuff, but most hero comics bore me).

I wasn't going into this looking for gritty or anything in particular, I just wanted an entertaining show featuring the characters that I'm familiar with (Between the movies and the pop culture osmosis effect I know them pretty well). Between Sean Pertwee, Donal Logue and Robin Lord Taylor's performances as Alfred, Bullock and Penguin respectively, I'm getting what I'm after. Oh and Cory Michael Smith is pretty good as Nygma too, I'd like to see more of him.

Well, this week's episode has cemented Penguin's place as my favourite part of the series. He's just so adorably psychotic.

The Exchange

Spoiler:
the killer who shot the waynes is a member of the league of shadows and this is to crumble the pillars of Gotham.
Suspect: alfred
reasoning: kat saw alfred, saw him again with Bruce wayne at the funeral, and followed them to the manor house.

Sovereign Court

What.

Sovereign Court

yeah.......... young penguin is awesome.... unfortunately I couldn't keep telling myself "This is how Joker kept the loot at the beginning of Dark Knight"

To be fair, it was a common plot device long before that film came along. The Joker also had a much more elaborate way of dealing with it, by getting the henchmen to kill each other off.

Sovereign Court

yeah.... the joker would own the penguin......

loved the special effects of venom and the development of Bruce.

That was the best episode yet.

Felt pretty "Batman-y" to me (as subjective as that is).

I thought it was interesting that they were introducing a prototype version of venom so early in the story line. I expected that particular plot point to come into it far later. Definitely a good episode though.

Still loving that Penguin. Good to see that, although his plans are still working, he's also getting a few hard knocks in there to teach him the dangers of being over confident.

Sovereign Court

that show is amazing

if the show is to follow the comics how powerful/influence should the penguin get? does he control a large gang . Ive only followed him on the batman cartoons and the old 60's tv show/tim burton movie and in all cases hes got a small gang or penguin subjects

Sovereign Court

well, we've seen last week that he likes to *trim* down his crew size at times... :-P

Sovereign Court

I read a ridiculous theory that penguin is the Joker.

Yeah. No. Please. No.

Sovereign Court

Meh, I doubt this theory will happen. If it does they sure will stir up the hardcore DC fans! (i.e. me *not* included... hehehe)

In recent comics continuity the Penguin is cast as one of the major mob bosses in Gotham. As such he has considerable power and influence along with a host of underlings working for him. It is a much more refined and beleiveable character than version presented in the Silver Age, and Burton's Penguin had only superficial similarities to any other version of the character that I've seen (much like his Joker from the first movie).

The best use of Penguin started in the DCAU, where he became a legitimate businessman, proprietor of the Iceberg Lounge. It was a trendy place to go, and attracted a lot of high society types.

It was also a front. In the front, Cobblepot got to play nicey-nice and hobnob with the legitimate folks in Gotham. In the back, he ran weapons, fenced goods, etc. Batman knew about it, but he allowed it to run - he could close Penguin down any time he wanted, but he found he could lean on Penguin to find out what the "baddie of the week" was up to. As bad as Penguin's illicit dealings are, they're small potatoes compared to what Bane, Freeze or (God forbid) The Joker could plan.

The comics briefly followed this line, but since they have to shake things up often, it didn't last. They have a different audience and rhythm to cater to, so his legitimacy only lasted as long as it was interesting.

not feeling this show which sucks because I like donal logue a lot

Sovereign Court

Ooooh man I loved this episode. Especially the end.

Sovereign Court

Yes... Penguin is always 2 steps ahead of everyone.

spoiler...:
Doing his reappearing act means he's severing his ties with his mob boss somehow... I was under the impression mob bossman wanted the penguin to be his "secret" weapon

I read something about this show to the effect of 'the cops think they're in nolan batman and the villains think they're in adam west batman' which I think is extremely on point

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I like that dichotomy, honestly. The juxtaposition of just how b+%$$#$ insane most of the villains are with the cops acting like (relatively) normal people in reaction to it is fun.

Yeah, I'm with Rynjin on this one. I like the idea of cops trying to go about business as usual while dealing with what appears to be a plague of, to be frank, complete and utter nutters descending on their turf.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

if you guys enjoy that angle then great; it just articulated one of the things which made the show not mesh for me

Sovereign Court

If you think about it, insane villains should be acting insane, while cops should behave like stable custodians of the peace

Edit: although Gordon's partner, the almost-dirty-cop who thinks outside the box all the time, could be moving slowly into the insane group (kinda fights fire with fire in terms of understanding the villains, while Gordon is more by the book)

no, not really. they're not acting insane so much as camp.

Yeah, actually I totally agree with this.

And I like it. (If it was all Nolan Batman, I'd probably drop Gotham. Boring and dreary. Bring on at least some camp, AFAIC.)

Dark Archive

Entitled "Penguin's Umbrella" this episode is my favorite by far.

This episode progresses the main plot forward, and unexplained story arc points come to light.

Cameo of Victor Zsasz, we see the Penguin's criminal mind at work, I liked the character of Harvey Bullock, last week's show brought to light another side of Bullock, in this episode its hard not to cheer him on, I even LOVED the Mayor in his brief part.

I hope this series grows further with more episodes like this one.

Sovereign Court

Oh damn. A good episode. A very good episode.

Scarab Sages

I enjoyed that little twist at the end with <redacted> and <redacted> meeting outside <redacted>'s <redacted>. Very interesting to see the complexity of the plot.
