Is it now worth it to pay the extra 4000 gold for increased hit dice to the homunculi in PFS?

Advice

With the new abilities we are able to add to the homunculi will they also be based off of our hit dice or will they be based off of the familiar. I'm speaking in particular about the breath weapon ability.

Anyone?

seeing that as its HD are based off of yours as a familiar, I would say no...in that regard. Now if you took an extra one to grant your buddy the feat he gets at 3 HD...such as Weapon Finesse...THEN we're getting somewhere. I am gonna be so broke at level 7...

The reason that I posted here as opposed elsewhere is because money is handled differently here.

As well as rules for their creation.

This is incorrect, it's abilities are tied to it's own Hit Die. Only it's HP's are tied to your level.

This was the impression that I am under.

If this much is true to your understanding, would it be worth the investment to increase its HD so that acid breath weapon would do 1d6 damage per 2 HD? As well as the dc for its poison bite ability.

On a related note, what potion(x10) would it be best to include in its creation to give it a SLA . If you include multiple types of potions can you give it multiple SLA's?

Effects related to number of HD use either the Master's character level or the Familiar's HD whichever is higher.

Also it's important to remember that for PFS you have to get an NPC to make the Homunculus. Effectively doubling the cost of the extra HD and abilities. So it'd cost you 1000 gold for a level 1 spell like ability once per day and 4000 gold per Homunculus HD.

You have to use 10 of the same potion to give it the SLA.

Not necessarily true. At least concerning PFS. The silvanshee familiars abilities has been Stated to work off its own HD. Which is why I'm asking.

This is also why I made this thread in the PFS forum.. but some people like to flag threads without actually reading the question in its entirety or understanding it.

Tiny familiars (or all familiars?) get Weapon Finesse as a Bonus feat - no need for 3 HD.

With the caveat that this comment is strictly for PFS then my answer is no, it's not worth it for those purposes.

First, for the acid breath you are spending 8,000GP for an extra 1D6 of damage for a creature that has a horribly low DC for this. It's a construct so it doesn't get to add it's con bonus to the DC for the reflex save so it's never going to reliably affect the target.
For the poison bite it's not necessary, simply give it a bow and have it poison it's arrows. Doesn't matter the DC if you force them to make half a dozen saves every round. They'll eventually fail it as long as their fort save is under the DC.

The potion to SLA is a difficult one to rate. It all depends on what you want the familiar to do since it can only do this trick once a day. I'd routinely give it the Vanish, Expeditious retreat or any of the other get out of trouble spells. Also there is nothing in the power description that says it can only be done once so I'd personally allow it considering the cost.

Now, outside of PFS it absolutely is worth it to do all this things as long as you don't take the homunculus as a familiar. Leave it as it is and buy 3-4 of them with multiple coordinated abilities and run around like that. Once you can burn about 25,000GP on your homonculi they become a massive force/action economy multiplier and can take any class to levels usually impossible for them to achieve on their own.

Thanks, very good insight there.
