My print copy of Bestiary has this error - it's the 2nd printing. But the PRD also has this error so I suspect it hasn't been corrected.
The Gnoll entry has two errors I can see.
#1 - the gnoll stat block includes a spear (and also a spear as a ranged weapon) but the treasure entry says he has a battleaxe and a longbow.
#2 - a spear is a two-handed weapon, but the AC entry (and treasure) includes a shield. So the spear could be changed to a shortspear that does 1d6+2 damage or the AC has to be adjusted.

Given that the gnoll is already rather understatted for CR 1 (even with this favorable error), any correction should probably err on the side of making the creature stronger. So don't downgrade him to the shortspear, upgrade him to the battleaxe. Alternately, remove the shield but add in a chain shirt to keep the AC the same.
Dasrak, I agree that the gnoll is quite weak for CR 1 and probably should be CR 1/2.
Giving him the battleaxe and longbow actually probably is preferable, except that the illustration (which is very good) shows him with a spear.
Also these stats don't include power attack which would be good if he is using a 2-handed weapon (though it's only a +1 difference). Then he gets +2 (1d8+6/x3). This makes up for his low HP (by CR)
So I like your chain shirt & spear idea.
