Yeah it can be rather frustrating when you go to make a post and they lock the thread while you are typing... happened to me twice now.

Yes, I know that feeling.

Honestly, the whole "getting off-topic" reason for locking threads has always struck me as being incredibly poor.

Conversations, by their very nature, are fluid; topics change organically as people talk, and that's not a bad thing. I've been the OP in threads where the nature of the discussion has changed, and I've been a part of that change, only to suddenly find the thread locked for getting away from the original topic - it's frustrating, and unnecessary.

I honestly wish the mods here would stop doing that, or at least tone it back.

+1 and then some.

So how are Captain Yesterday and I not locking every single thread we post on? We don't even pay attention to the topic...

There are differences between evolving naturally and intended thread derailment (even if the derailment can be made in subtle manners).

also we're doing Iron Gods inspired by X-files, i was going to save it for halloween but the family insisted as soon as possible:) the thread is called The Twilight Files: x-filing Iron Gods, i suck at linking so you're on your own finding it:)
now what was this thread about.........

C'mon you guys hardly use it, i'm sure you won't even notice it's gone, if all else fails just take one from Oakland, a good bleaching, a lot of paint and its good as new:D

edit: of course thats all assuming you can wrestle it away from all the biker gangs:)

Did I mention Captain Yesterday and I roam off topic slightly?

There was a wonderful 10-question "Are you a Bay Area native?" questionnaire that included, "Name all 7 bridges that go across the bay, including the Golden Gate. BONUS: Put them in north-south order."

I have yet to meet a native over 16 who can't answer this off the top of his/her head, or a non-native who doesn't ask, "7?!?!?"

Answer:

Everyone can remember the Richmond-San Rafael, Golden Gate, Bay, San Mateo, and Dumbarton bridges. But there are two stupid little bridges way up north called the Carquinez and Benecia bridges that are pretty critical for anyone up thataways.

Of course, it's arguable whether the Golden Gate, Benecia, or Carquinez bridges actually cross the bay. The Golden Gate is between the bay and the Pacific Ocean, and the Benecia and Carquinez bridges definitely look like they cross the Sacramento river, not the bay.

What if we make a topic on all topics?

When someone is intentionally derailing a thread, that's cause for removing their posts - locking the entire thread because of that is just giving the derailers what they want (e.g. the original topic is no longer being discussed).

There are two types here; one person derailing someone else thread, and someone trying to make a "false front" topic (basically, title and opening post are about something, but the thread creator quickly change subject). Also take into account how early in the thread the derailment occurs.

I'm fine with that:)
you didnt honestly expect a serious discussion with the thread title did you:)
i know I certainly didnt, which is why I came and why its in off-topic discussion:)

That brings up an interesting point: is it possible to go off-topic in a thread that is posted in the off-topic discussions section?

And if so, how far off-topic is too far?

5 people marked this as a favorite.

The question is, if we get off-topic enough, will we loop around and come back on topic?

*mind*

*BLOWN*

Yeah, I have seen that happen multiple times, it only requires one person to change the flow back to being on topic, so locking for a slight departure is a bit silly.

You're artificially conflating these two. If one person is intentionally derailing a thread, then just remove the derailing post instead of giving them their wish and locking the entire thread.

If the thread creator changes the topic of the thread that they started, that's just another aspect of "the thread topic changes course organically over time" - it's certainly no reason to shut the entire thread down.

My deliberately off-topic thread got locked for wandering off-topic.

Disclaimer: The above post is deliberately written to be completely unfair and not exactly true. I'm just butthurt.

Disclaimer ^2: I actually don't care that much, and the locking may well have been justified. It helped that we didn't just get a form letter. :D

Despite my namesake, I keep failing miserably.

I'm like a fake refugee.

Dangit, I know there's a political joke there somewhere, and I just can't put it together.

actually:
This alias was never created with the intent of actually locking up threads, but merely humorously calling attention to hot button topics that inevitably lead to locks.

I think it got locked because that dude took my post completely out of context. Liz removed the entire string of posts related to it. So, she probably thinks I'm Glen Beck, or Sean Hannity, or something.

AWESOME!

When I was stationed in Japan I got in the habit of riding a bike all over the place. I had a 15 speed mountain bike. I would be reluctant to do the same thing here because the Japanese were used to sharing the road with bicyclists. Here in America most definitely not so much. That and I'm a lazy SOB who doesn't like schlepping a bike up and down several flights of stairs all the time.
