Greetings! Below is the original recruitment post and a link to our thread.
Please review and post your submissions. If you have any quaestions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Greetings and welcome to the recruitment thread for “To Change the Way of the World: A Better Valcia Begins Today.”
I am looking for 1 character to replace our front-line rogue skill monkey. The new character should fill the same type of role, but does not have to be the same class.
If selected, I will assume that you have read the story completely and read through the discussion thread by the time your character starts play. This is so we do not need to revisit previous questions.
If anything is unclear. Ask about it :)
You are members of the Army of the Freeland of Amerys, a newly reformed country and the first to bring Democracy to Valcia. Your missions will involve the safety and protection of Amerys, the expansion of your lands through the conquest of or alliance with new territories, and the abolishment of slavery.
That said, not everyone in the army is a fighter. The army need soldiers, strategists, healers, diplomats, intellectuals, spies, scouts, etc.
HERE’S THE KICKER
There are one or more groups also playing in this world that have other missions and ideals! So not only will you be trying your luck against NPCs but other groups of PCs as well! These other groups may ally with you: they may try to kill you. *evil grin*
7th level characters
Roll 2d6+6 six times and arrange to your liking. (Rolls must be made in the recruitment thread. You may roll two sets and take your pick)
Standard Wealth by Level (No one item worth more than 25%)
Most PF races available, HOWEVER, PF races in this world represent the many variations of humanity. Therefore, they are purely for stat reasons. Everyone in this game is a human where RP is concerned.
No Alchemist, Gunslinger, Magus, Ninja, Paladin, Samurai, Summoner, or Witch
Advice: Look at the MAP. There are two ways to travel and trade: Land and sea. It would be a good idea to be able to do both.
You are from, have immigrated to, or are trying to immigrate to(this one is harder) Amerys: the country on the left of the horseshoe.
Slavery in allowed in the Kingdoms of Erenon, Isteroth, and Thelkon. The Freeland of Amerys outlawed slavery 20 years ago and opposes it openly.
Erenon is known for training the best high-end slaves in the known world: bed slaves, scribes, healers, warriors; everything a ruling class could desire. They are very costly and take years to train. Erenon treats its slaves with dignity and respect when possible.
Isteroth is a Triarchy (Dagan(M), Ekur(M), and Ninbanda(F). Think a cross between Egypt, Sumeria, Mesopotamia and add a dash of Slaver's Bay from Game of Thrones.) Isteroth imports slaves from wherever they may and uses them for mining, farming, logging, and construction. They use they slaves hard and are cruel and careless with them, but they do not sell slaves and are therefore the only country with whom Amerys will openly trade.
Thelkon is a kingdom in that there is a High King (Jarl Magnus Torstein), but there are many, many kings that pay him allegiance. Thelkon sells the majority of the slaves in the world. With their love of reaving and their population crisis, slaves are easy to find and easier to sell. They are untrained, undisciplined things though.
The Freeland of Amerys is a true democracy. Education, Art, and Philosophy are paramount there. Don’t think them weak though, every citizen is conscripted to fight in the People’s Army from 16-21 and again from 38-50. It is said that if the whole nation was called to arms, they would have close to 100,000 trained swords.
I should also mention that this is a relatively low magic campaign. Arcane casters are exceptionally rare. Divine casters are slightly more common, but both a generally feared by the common folk.

I will of course go with Character 1. Lets see what I can come up with. Looks like I have quite a bit of reading to do. When are submissions due?

Just dropping a line here to give some info on the current characters for anybody that doesn't creep on the game.
Mortimer Talinth A wizardy wizard of blastiness. Has some utility in there, but is mostly about burning enemies to a crisp.
Esther Pennycoat A battle oracle who is currently a front liner but wants to go to archery. Our main healer and uses mostly defensive buffs for her spells.
Erriana A front line "whirlwind" as I like to call her. Some sort of bard/monk that flicks through battle buffing and slashing. Tankiest party member at the moment.
GM DSP Or GM DPS as I like to call him. He's a GM who knows the rules well and runs a tightly kept game. Fights are hard and he doesn't pull punches, but it's fair and a fun game.
The party is pretty good at talking to people, they are articulate and well trained in social skills.
Honestly, I am not entirely sure what kind of character would be best to join us. Love to hear ideas and I'll be here to provide feedback (although GM DSP obviously has precedence over me).

Let's start with some rolls...
Roll Set 1:
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9
Roll Set 2:
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 1) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
Is was more of a roll out of curiosity, good luck to everyone though.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 2) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 6 = 11
-----------------
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 6 = 16
Hmmm. Probably the second set.
Is 3rd Party ok? I'm thinking Telepath. Social skill monkey with the power to bend minds.

This is the submittal from Scorn above. I am pleased to introduce Ezekial Dune, soldier, rogue and freedom fighter. His friends call him Zeke. He is a combat brute with a good set of skills and decent mobility. His perception for traps is great. He is good with a horse and knows his way around a boat. I hope you like him. I build him special for you guys and took GM DSP's comment about getting someone you like and moving on to heart. Please let me know what you think.

First Thoughts I like your summary paragraph above, it brings a lot to the table that we lack/need. I'm not crazy about the formatting, I generally like things more organized and easy to access, but that's just nit-picky stuff.
In Detail
- You can just call your race an orc, we understand that we are all essentially humans.
- The languages are unique. If you look under Mortimer's profile you will find every language that GM DSP has made us aware of.
- For deity, might I suggest Milani?
- I still don't like the formatting. To understand your build I have to read through the entire thing, and you don't detail abilities out. Not overly important, but it's one of my pet peeves.
- Two spring loaded wrist sheathes? Interesting.

Working on a slayer now, probably an archer. Need to gear up, assign skill points and get the sheet up. I'll read through the threads before the final draft and backstory.
What I've got so far.
Str 16, Dex 18 , Con 13, Int 16, Wis 13 , Cha 11
"Elf": Dark vision (Light Sensitivity), Silent Hunter, Weapon Familiarity, Keen Senses, Elemental Resistance (Fire 5)

Feats 6; Point Blank, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Manyshot, Deadly Aim, Improved Precise Shot
Traits: Veteran of Battle (Gorum),
Also were we rolling HP?
Mortimer Talinth |
Working on a slayer now...
I read that as "Working on a slaver now."
My reaction was "You had one job."
Anyways, there are no ACG playtest classes allowed. I know, because I wanted to make Mortimer an Arcanist.
For HP, I think we did 1/2+1 after first level, but I'm not 100% sure. GM?
Ezekial Dune |
I am happy to work on the format. Its currently basic Herolab output, but I agree that is not ideal. I will add both a detailed background and a tab on tactics and how I see him fitting into the group. I wanted to get the basic crunch up as quick as possible though.
Thanks for the comments. The wrist sheaths will hold a sap and a wand. Oh, I forgot to by the sap too. :)
Next I'll start my reading of the background so I can better understand the world. I will post again when I have an update for you. In the mean time, more comments are welcome.

I like your formatting Cyrus, although to really like it I'd love to see some bolding ;)
I do remind you that we are looking for a frontliner though. We're a small party and our oracle already has a number of ranged feats she has been wanting to use.
The plan is to have the sheet look like my Other Character
That's fine I really don't need to have two archer characters at once anyway. But as a ranger I'm stuck with light or med armor. Even if I pick up proficiency I lose my combat style. I have the option of tank or striker. One has to be sacrificed to have the other. Would the group prefer higher AC or high damage output?
Finished the discussion thread earlier the gameplay is going to take awhile.
Gavmania |
I have been mulling it over, and have come to the following conclusions;
(1) You need a frontliner who can pull their weight. This means Primary class needs to be a full BAB class.
(2) You need someone that can help you face off against the likes of Targ. Since improving AC to the point where he would find it difficult to hit is nigh on impossible, and getting enough hp to take his hits would require a fully dedicated character, I am left with 2 options
(a) engage him at distance with reach weapons, and stay out of reach.
or (b) prevent him from attacking.
(3) You need a skill based character.
All of this suggests a Ranger Trip build; They can lock down an opponent at 10' range with a reach weapon while pummelling them to death and also come with a handy number of skills. By coincidence the point you are at needs a skilled tracker, too, so that dovetails neatly.
But before I go ahead and make a character, I need to clarify a few things:
Firstly, I don't have a GMAIL account. I notice you use them to pass on information; if that's going to be a problem, I'll withdraw now and save time.
Second some rules clarifications. The combat section on maneuvers says
If your attack roll equals or exceeds the CMD of the target, your maneuver is a success and has the listed effect.
but the section on trip attacks reads
If your attack exceeds the target's CMD, the target is knocked prone.
So which way would you play this? Equals CMD or exceeds CMD? (I'd be easy either way, but it would be helpful to know).
Thirdly, if I were to take the Wild Stalker archetype and gain rage as a Barabarian, I would face the following weakness:
While in rage, a barbarian cannot use any...ability that requires patience or concentration.
Does this include trip attacks?
I look forward to hearing from you.
GM DSP |
No Gmail is fine, but you'd need a facebook account to access the map.
Meets or exceeds CMD = trip.
Rage would not affect tip, but it would affect using things like combat expertise.
FYI, not all fights will be like the Targ fight. He was a boss, and you can expect boss fights to be similarly challenging, but you won't always be up against a brute.
Mortimer Talinth |
@Flash. Ah that format is glorious. I can't really say for AC vs DPS, I would need to see the specifics of the build. But we do hurt pretty hard right now.
@Gavmania. I like your detailed approach!
1) I agree.
2) The only thing that prevented party deaths versus a boss like Targ was crane style feats pre-nerf. There's about nothing you can do against a boss like that except stay out of range and throw fireballs >.>
3) Indeed!
Somebody who can track is sorely needed, especially right now.
I agree with DSP's view on CMD. It functions like AC.
I also agree with his view on raging.
Gavmania |
OK, here are my rolls:
Set 1
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 2) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
Prewtty poor. 1 Good roll, the rest average to below average
Set 2
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14
Much better. None as high as the highest of set 1, but all average to above average. I'll take this set.
GM DSP |
Thanks Blake!
One thing, when choosing favored enemies (human) it would look like this:
Instead of Favored Enemy: Humanoid (elf) (human) (dwarf) etc.
You choose Favored Enemy: Humanoid (Amerysi) (Thelkonese) (Erense) (Ledranos Native) etc.
Does that make sense? This goes for all you would-be rangers.
Gavmania |
Just a note; I have made him a member of the Marines (Ge has profession (soldier) and profession (sailor)), so it would be easy to introduce him.
Can I add to his background that he has just returned as the only survivor of a mission which was destroyed by a mysterious person who only left a calling card with the initials R.R. (it would be up to you what it actually said) - or would that detract from the existing storyline?
Ezekial Dune |
Good timing. I have just finished my update to Ezekial. I hope you like him.
I believe I have addressed his combat strength in the "Party Role and Notes on Tactics" spoiler but, since Mortimer brought it up above, wanted to mention the issue of BAB here. Ezekial is a rogue and so does not have full BAB. But if you look at his build I believe you will have to agree that he does no suffer much because of it. He has a bow and can strike at range when he needs to but is melee focused to support the Oracle's goal of moving to archery. And because he is a rogue he brings 63 skill points to the table.
Please let me know what you think. I will call this version semi-final. I may want to slightly revise his background and language selection as I learn more about the world.
Rikash |
I'm kind of tempted to make a submission. I have an idea for an Urban Ranger who fights with a shield and short sword (heavy shield and light weapon where the shield is held in his main hand) that could be interesting. He's likely been trained in espionage, infiltration and othe wetwork. Could I use my rolls from the original thread?
Arknight |
Arknight: Were are not using piecemeal armor rules, but the escaped gladiator mercenary works. However, Amerys would enlist anyone becoming a national. It is possible to get a "contractor position" with the army, but it usually only comes with previous service rendered.
I can work with that :) I'll see what I can come up with for background. I guess I should roll stats too.. :)
Set 1
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 = 13
Set 2
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 1) + 6 = 8
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 2) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13
I think the first set works best....
Flashohol |
Link to Cyrus / with bold and everytihng.
More or less finished, I decided on Rogue because Urban ranger just didn't feel right and cuz I already have a ranger on the boards.
A few bit's and bobs left, have to finish with gear, appearance, some kind of background and I may change my Minor Magic spell.
Edit:
Wand of Shield, Combat Expertise and Offensive Defense will all raise his AC high enough to front-line. Very Skill Monkey with 84 Skill ranks including Craft and Profession. Only thing I don't have that we might need is K. Geo and I may cross-class if it fits into my background. Will most likely pick up Improved Feint next level.
Mortimer Talinth |
Link to Cyrus / with bold and everything.
It is much appreciated!
A few things I noticed:
- I don't think an elven curveblade does 1d20 damage.
- You require the "exotic weapon proficiency" feat, not "martial weapon proficiency" for the elven curveblade.
I really like your crunch, the presentation and the meat of it. Looking forward to reading your fluff.
