RoTR SotS Part 5 Locations

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I just wanted to confirm that I was playing this correctly. In Sins of the Saviors part 5, there are only 7 locations listed, instead of the usual 8. It appears that there is one less location than the usual number for each size party. Is this intended, or was there a typo and the Envy location is also supposed to be here?

I understand if the standard layout was being played with, but this seems like a strange place to do it, since there was such an obvious additional location to use.

Can you confirm that for the final scenario, there are only supposed to be 7 locations in play?

Just 7.

Cool. Thanks for the quick response!

If it's not too much to ask, was it a design balance or RP reason for that decision?

Sins of the Saviors, p. 255:
The majority of (the Abjurant Halls of Envy) has been destroyed, ruined during a relatively recent war when the Wardens of Envy attempted to seize control of the newly awakened runeforge pool…. Those portions of the complex that have collapsed have been absorbed and recycled into the stone surrounding the demiplane—attempts to dig out the collapsed rooms are destined to fail, as these rooms no longer exist.

That said, try playing it with 8 and let me know how it goes. :^)

Thanks Again! Also, to clarify, one of the big things that confused us was that there were enough henchmen to cover a full group of eight locations. So that may be something to keep an eye out for in future publications (previously, when there were named henchmen, the number of generics were just enough to cover each location unless they were used in a barrier)

I just popped in to ask this exact question, the extra henchman really does seem to hint there should be 8 !

Seven Stone Head henchmen, one in each of seven Stone Head location decks, plus Arkrhyst on the Sihedron Circle himself.

He got his wires crossed...but the answer is, yes, there are only supposed to be seven locations in the last scenario.

Oh, sorry. Yeah, see my spoiler above if you want to know why.

No problem Mike.

As a sidebar I just finished this scenario on the 24th turn, with Valeros delivering a +3 Great Club to the head to the tune of a check of 69

These guys get powerful by the end of pack 5 !

As requested, we just finished a group doing this will 8 locations this weekend. We were able to win, but we were on our holy candle turns (actually got to use it twice doe to halls of pride), and we had a lot of badly injured characters. It's probably still tough enough with 7, but the 'not enough challenge' crowd would probably enjoy going full-sized.

Having played scenario 5 with two characters a couple of times, I recommend adding an extra location, at least for small groups. The scenario wasn't particularly difficult, given that it is the final scenario of adventure 5.

In 2 player games, the characters you play and luck can really factor into the difficulty. Adding additional locations, especially in this box, for 2 player groups would ramp things up and might be over the top for many pair ups.

There are 2 problems with scenario 5 which combine to make it too easy:
1) There is one less location than normal
2) One of the locations contains only the villain

With 2 players, there are only 21 encounter cards, and there is not even any danger of meeting the villain when you are not set up to defeat him. It's just dig through those two locations, defeat the henchmen, close the locations and then take whatever time you need to defeat the villain.
I just don't think it's a fitting climax to the adventure.

Yeah, I finally finished my last group with it today, and I added the 5th location (3-character party). It was with great trepidation because that is the one that gives you 2 extra cards in your hand, but it is the most bane-heavy location (4+Henchman) besides Halls of Wrath so it balanced out. Still won the scenario 13 turns in. Those last two scenarios blow if you aren't in a large party.
