RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Nightblood is the intelligent artifact sword from Brandon Sanderson's novel, Warbreaker.

Spoiler:
It's also in Words of Radiance, which I find exciting

This is a difficult conversion, because Nightblood drains Breath from his wielders, and kills them when they have no Breath left (which under normal circumstances is harmless).

I know that Nightblood should have a very high Ego, as it can attract weak-willed creatures into picking it up and using it. And once drawn, even the strong-willed obey Nightblood's primary objective to destroy evil ("Evil" being a concept the sword doesn't understand and only guesses at), until they discard it.

Of course, Nightblood is very powerful. Against non-living enemies (and objects), it essentially casts Disintegrate. Against the living, it's pretty much Slay Living.

I'm just not sure what resource Nightblood can feed on.

HP doesn't work well, because wielding Nightblood doesn't make you more susceptible to dying from other wounds. Spell slots would kind of work...but I don't like that from a gamist perspective.

The only thing that comes close to the value of biochromatuc breath is experience points. Anything that simply recharged would not grasp the destructive nature of nightblood at all.

Wow just realized I goofed on the spoiler tags, hopefully that doesn't ruin anything for anyone.

Experience points...you kind of have a point. Not a game mechanic I especially like. Maybe Charisma drain?

Could work but I like experience better. It is supposed to be a big penalty to weild it. A permanent lessening of your power. That said I can see the connection between lowering your charisma and going drab. I already read WOR do I'm good but I also hope it was not ruined for others.

It's not permanent. You can always get more breaths from other people. Negative levels, maybe?

But those breaths come from other people who only have one. It's a lot more permanent than anything that can be recharged with a restoration spell or a nights rest. But I'm beating a dead horse here so I'll stop.

Make breaths to XP as nonlethal damage is to lethal?

Nightblood is certainly a major artifact, so really, do what ever you want.

Maybe make the wielder/victim unable to be resurrected by any means?
