currently "legal" archetypes and classes

Pathfinder Society

Are these archetypes/classes currently "legal" in Pathfinder Society play?

- arcanist
- brawler
- investigator
- knife master

Are there any particular limits on them, beyond the standard ones for all characters?

I really love all the resources available, but I'm having trouble finding an ordered list of classes and archetypes that I can register on my Pathfinder Society account and use at an upcoming convention. A feats list would be easy, too. Unfortunately, the additional resources document doesn't make it easy to figure these things out.

Is the current Hero Lab list accurate? If the classes/archetypes are listed as "Playtest" in there, does that mean we can use them at official events or not?

Thanks!

You really just need to find their source and scroll down to it in Additional Resources all of the ACG Playtest classes are legal and clearly listed as available. Knifemaster from ultimate Combat is also available, since its not one of the options Additional Resources rules out from Ultimate Combat.

It really is easy to find you just find the resource the thing you want is in and scroll down to it. There are some links at the top of the page and for most arhcetypes, etc., it will be much easier if you hit the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game link as this takes you straight to all the big books that you are likely after. The ACG Playtest is the first thing under that link. Remember you have to own a copy of the source and bring it, etc.

The easiest way is to identify what you want to use, go to the Additional Resources page and do a Ctrl+F search for the title of the source it's from, and see if it's on the list of legal stuff.

Except that things are often not called out by name, but by page range (e.g. 'all feat on pages 13-16 are legal').

#firstworldproblem - having to actually look stuff up in a book :-p

I don't see what that has to do with the fey.

well, the fey have computers (creatures bred specifically to process information), indoor plumbing (tree roots count as plumbing, right?), centralized healthcare (all the temples have clerics who can cast healing spells), and two political parties (summer and winter) that try to get support for their candidates to opened up lord positions. So, quite a bit, really.

In order to use an additional resource, you are required to own the book. It is assumed that you start from the book and then look up something cool in it. I realize that this does not help if you are trying to look something cool that you see online or in herolab, but it will help you ask better questions. At least one website I know (Archives of Nethys) includes the page number in their listing for an item.

From what I am seeing, you are referring to Herolab as part of your research and composition of your character. Especially in a convention, you have to supply the original source, via book or watermark pdf, for reference of your character abilities. Using Herolab, a third party source, will not be a legal source.

Other than that, make note about what skills and abilities your archetypes replaces. If a single ability conflicts with two different archetypes, then the combination will not work.

I re-bought all of the hardcover books in PDF just so I can have them on my tablet. I dont buy hard covers anymore.

Its that last part that most people forget about. I dont know many people who actually carry the additional resources with them and I dont know many people who enforce it, but your mileage may vary.

Exactly.

I understand that you need to own the books that contain the classes/feats/etc. that you are going to use, and that you should have read the books. That's all good.

When creating characters, though, it's always useful to have a good reference, just to double-check and make sure you haven't inadvertently included something that isn't legal. Right now, the "Additional Resources" document just isn't very user-friendly. It would be much easier to say "in book X, this is what is not allowed," rather than plowing through long, poorly formatted text blocks.

As far as HeroLab goes, I was merely wondering whether it uses up to date PFS rules if you select that option. I wouldn't create a character for PFS play that way, but it can be useful as a quick resource.

Others have answered your other questions.

Herolab is correct the vast majority of the time but it does have bugs. And it lags behind official changes a little.

Its a VERY useful source, especially for looking for things. But it can't be trusted 100% while additional resources can be (well, almost. Very, very occasionally Mike Brock will make an official ruling a couple of weeks before additional resources is updated)

Archives of Nethys is a good resource for this that is generally updated correctly with PFS legal status (has the Glyph of the Open Road on it, or not).
