I've never played online (but ought to try sometime,) but there is definitely a lot of online play going on. I would start by checking out the Grand Lodge for Online Play section of the forums. Looks like there's everything from HowTos to recruiting threads up there.
Also, the creator of the first thread stickied up there is Joseph Caubo. He's the Online Venture Captain, and if you message him through the forums I'm sure he can get you to the right place.
Happy Pathfindering!

Ok, step 1, read the guide
Step 2: ask any questions you have
Step 3: ignore the people saying that the answer is in the guide and read the guide to get the answer :) . The guide is dense and has a tendency to go into particulars without giving the big picture first.
Make a character. 20 point boy (to prevent "I totally rolled strait 18s, my brother saw me) No synthesist summoners, no vivisectionist alchemists. 150 gold to start.
Fame: You can buy almost anything you want if you have the fame score for it, if its a +1 weapon or armor. Basically, Don't worry about oddball choices: If you want to use a +2 flaming icy whip you don't need to wait for one to drop.

If you're interested in online play, another good idea is to familiarize yourself with virtual tabletops.
One of the much used ones is Roll20, because you can create an account and play for free.
Also, you need some way to talk to the other players. Most people use Google+ hangouts, some use Teamspeak.
The most important part for this is you need a microphone and either speakers that are not too loud so your mic won't send what you receive, or headphones.
When looking at the recruiting threads for online games, be sure to check the virtual tabletop (VTT) and Voicechat that will be used.
