Vital Strike and Ranged Spellstrike

Rules Questions

I can probably guess the answer to this but can you use Vital Strike on a Ranged Spellstrike?

I am making a Card Throwing Magus who can channel spells through the throwing cards.

Using myrmidarch and staff master ... in a hope of making the dmg from the playing cards (uses the stats of a Dart with a feat) viable i was hoping to use vital strike.

So Vital Strike (1d4+1d4) + Ranged Touch Spell (1d4,1d6,ect)

Do you think at level 6+

2d4(Vital Strike)+1d3(Acid Splash/Ray of Frost)+Str 2 + Arcane Strike 1-2

on 1 attack a round would be too much to ask a GM to wave?

Unfortunately spellstrike only works with melee weapons.

Melil is referring to the myrmidarch archeytpe.

Ranged Spellstrike (Su)

At 4th level, a myrmidarch can use spellstrike to cast a single-target touch attack ranged spell and deliver it through a ranged weapon attack. Even if the spell can normally affect multiple targets, only a single missile, ray, or effect accompanies the attack. At 11th level, a myrmidarch using a multiple-target spell with this ability may deliver one ray or line of effect with each attack when using a full-attack action, up to the maximum allowed by the spell (in the case of ray effects). Any effects not used in the round the spell is cast are lost.

This ability replaces spell recall and improved spell recall.

You already know the answer to this question is no.

Vital strike is a standard action and casting the spell is a standard action and the spells you've listed can't be held.
If you were to substitute one of the touch range spells with charges (chill touch, frostbite, shocking grasp) then you COULD but you'd have to spend a round re-casting the spell to start it each time.

So no, you can't make a Gambit clone this way.

edit: here's the FAQ entry that shuts this idea down.

Can Vital Strike be used with Spring Attack? Can Vital Strike be used on a charge?

No. Vital Strike can only be used as part of an attack action, which is a specific kind of standard action. Spring Attack is a special kind of full-round action that includes the ability to make one melee attack, not one attack action. Charging uses similar language and can also not be used in combination with Vital Strike.

It seems like just about every question involving vital strike gets the same answer.

Q: Can I use Vital Strike with ______?
A: No

Vital strike requires an attack action (a type of standard action). Spellstrike modifies how a spell is delivered, so you would use the casting time of the spell; this is usually a standard action. At level 11, Ranged spellstrike can be used as a full round action to deliver multiple rays. For most spells, this would not work.

That said, if you were able to hold a charge from a previous round (which can happen with melee spellstrike, but probably not with ranged spellstrike) or cast a spell requiring less then a standard action (like a quickened spell), then you could use your standard action to Vital Strike.

So no for PFS, but you may get your DM to house rule it

If your spell uses an action faster then a standard (move, swift, free), then it would work.

He's using Ranged Spellstrike, an ability gained by the Myrmidarch archetype.

It's pretty much limited to Quickened Spells. Also, since Ranged Spell Strike requires a ranged spell, It can only be used with Rays or similar ranged touch spells. You can't use it with normal touch spells that can hold a charge.

Q: Does Vital Strike worth with-

A: No.

"Can I make the vital strike tree worth taking?"
"no"

Seems to be the general rule for vital strike feats. Not saying it doesn't have niche uses, but generally if you think vital strike will be cool in a situation it does not work.

Can I spend a Standard Action to Vital Strike in the same round I spend a Standard Action to use Ranged Spellstrike to cast a spell?

No
