Carrion Crown: The Hidden Road

Game Master Yog Sothoth's Blues

Heroic destinies are fraught with peril, and none-so-much as in the horror-ravaged lands of Ustalav, where the dead rest uneasily and a conspiracy wends its way from the bowels of the earth to the darkness beyond stars. Six are called, but who will survive the hidden road ahead?

I'm looking to run a Carrion Crown game. This is my first time using the Paizo site to run a game, so hopefully it works out for me, or I might move it elsewhere. Bear with me if it takes me a while to I'm heavy on fluff and light on crunch, so I'm looking for people who are going to be willing to write more than a sentence at a time. I post frequently, but because I work a lot of hours, I probably won't put up posts more than once per every other day. Here's the starting spread for builds. Applications that don't include something from below will be rejected out of hand. You will need the Carrion Crown Player's Guide for this.

Races: Any core, plus changelings, dhampirs, and orcs. Playing an orc is risky in Ustalav but could be fun. Just sayin.

Alignments: Good

Classes: Any core, APG, Ult. Combat and Ult. Magic archetypes acceptable. No Ninja or Samurai because that's not the flavor of the AP.

Point Buy: 25 points; you're heroes, you're supposed to be epic

Starting Gold: Max for class

Starting HP: Max, will roll for them on level-ups

Traits: One normal, one campaign

Backgrounds: A nice, fully-done background will go a long way towards getting you into my game. I don't need pages, but I need vividness. Make me feel your character. They should feel like, if not Ustalav natives, that they have a very, very good reason to be there.

For some background on me, I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of Ravenloft, and have run multiple campaigns for the setting in the past, so horror, and specifically Gothic Horror, are my bread and butter. I've played Pathfinder for a couple of years now, and I've been adapting Ravenloft to the Pathfinder rules set in my spare time. When I found Carrion Crown, I knew I had to run it, especially since Ustalav has always been my favorite part of Golarion. I want to make a game so scary that you end up missing a few days of work from it. Hopefully I can find four to six people who can make my dream a reality.

To keep from wading through tons of apps, I'm cutting applications off on Thursday, 2/27, at midnight. You'll know if you're in or not by Friday evening, and the game'll start once we've ironed out any last little bits.

Jay Madrigal

I think I'm going to rebuild him as a Dhampir, but this is my submission at 20 point buy before changing to Dhampir and using point buy of 25.

If you like the sounds of him, let me know and I'll get adjusting!

I was recently playing in a campaign with him on here, but after a day or two of starting and posting, the GM bit off more than she could chew, so the game sadly ended.

That's a bummer about the campaign. I'm pretty consistent when it comes to games; I have had one running for 12 years now with the same players. Go ahead and adjust your character. For the sake of fairness, I won't confirm or deny liking any particular character until all is said and done.

That's fair enough!

I'll have him edited once I know whether to keep him as a human or make him a dhampir because to be honest, either would work for him.

Thanks for the response and I'll look forward to your decision! :)

Tempting, but the super slow GM posting rate (every other day) is too slow for my liking, which is too bad because I'm otherwise quite fond of Ravenloft.

I post daily if it's possible, but I work a really intensive schedule on-call at a job where I make enough that I'll be retired by my fortieth birthday, so I can't always do it. That's why I put every other day at most, just to ensure I have a buffer. Do remember there will be other characters to interact with. If it helps, my posts tend to be... comprehensive.

But either way, your call.

Would you allow skinwalkers?

I'd play a character similar to this one.

Submitting Celowyn Cayen-Telva for your consideration.

Hm, I seem to be having bad luck with campaigns folding within the first couple weeks...

I might have to see what I can come up with for this one as it sounds like you're in it for the long haul. I do love me some Gothic Horror!

I'm not allowing any third-party races, or any other races that weren't mentioned under the races portion of my initial post.

I'll be looking over the applications periodically.

And yeah, I'm in this for the long haul. Depending on how quickly things go, I have this projected as going from anywhere for 4-6 years before it'd fully wrap, possibly less. That might change given play styles, personal events, and other unforeseen situations, but again, I have a pretty stable life and a so-so amount of free time. I also type very quickly.

Very interested. Will download guide and read tonight, dream up a concept while I sleep, write something tomorrow, and then post it up. Only concern is my job puts me in a position where I could end up relocating within a year, but we can still see.

Interested. I actually like the every other day post rate.

This character was made for a defunct home brew. I'll make the necessary modifications.

Background:

One morning while tending their meager farm a peasant and his wife were shocked to hear the plaintive cry of a baby coming from the woods near their home. Cautiously approaching the tree line they were shocked to find a basket containing a beautiful raven haired baby girl. looking into the girl's mismatched eyes the young wife, despite knowing the old tales, fell in love with the foundling. They named her Cassandra, in honor of the man's deceased mother.
Years passed and the beautiful baby grew into a beautiful woman. When Cassandra reached puberty she began to feel a unique pull towards the woods near her house. One night, after her parents went to sleep, she snuck out of their cabin and entered the woods following the voice in her head. Shortly she felt a malevolent presence following, stalking her. Growing more afraid she began to turn around and head back to the safety and warmth of her home. Suddenly from the darkness ,a deeper darkness struck her and knocked her to the ground. As she lay there a formless shadow enveloped her, chilling her to the marrow and draining the life from her.
Suddenly she felt the icy fingers recede as a warm light grew from her soul. Miraculously that light and warmth reached out and transfigured her into a being of pure energy. That energy burned the creature attacking her, causing it to flee in pain.
Returning home, Cassandra began to babble incoherently in an unknown tongue to her parents about what had happened, eventually she calmed down enough to explain. Soon everyone in the village knew about her encounter and how she had escaped. For a while whenever she visited the village, the villagers would make signs to ward off evil causing Cassandra great despair. Despite this Cassandra began using her talents to heal those in need. Over time she began to realize that she could extend that inner warmth to effect others around her.
Soon the villagers overcame their fear and accepted the young girl's gifts. After a while a strange man arrived in Cassandra's village and began asking about her. Directed to the Blackmoore homestead the man, a Professor Lorrimor, began asking Cassandra all kinds of questions about her encounter with the creature and, taking a good look at the young woman, about her childhood. After several days of questioning the Professor told young Cassandra that the creature she encountered was a shadow, a malevolent undead spirit, which drains the strength and life energy from it's victims. Astonished by her escape, Cassandra asks the Professor questions in return. Seeing her interest in learning more about how to fight these abominations, the Professor gave her one of his books on religion and religious lore.
Over the next two years Cassandra and the Professor kept in touch via letters, until one day she received a letter written in a strange hand. The letter was from the Professor's daughter saying that the man had died in a freak accident and had requested Cassandra's presence at the reading of his will.
Taking her meager belongings and hiring a coach to take her to Ravengro, Cassandra has finally arrived at the Lorrimor family home.

Submitting for consideration:
Lenneth Barlow
Changeling Hedge Witch

Everything but equipment is done and in the profile, including background and such. Let me know if there's anything that needs to be changed; I'll stat up her familiar and do equipment should she be selected :)

Ooooo Ravenloft. Me already likey :3

Here is Naught. She is a Changeling, NG.

Haven't decided yet whether to make her a Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) or Fighter (Unbreakable). Her campaign trait is Subject of Study.

Will have backstory and everything else up tomorrow, sleepy time now.

Hi Yog,

Your 12 year PbP campaign gives me much encouragement. I'm a dedicated player and GM myself, yet all too often find myself clutched by the icy grip of MIA GMs and players alike.

So without further ado, I submit Aliseya Belododia for your review. Varisian oracle extraordinaire, her back story and stats are in this profile, enjoy. I believe only her gear needs to be revised (I believe average gold was used in this build); I'll tend to that. You will notice from her back story that her character concept is a little outside of the box (and the rules); I hope you appreciate that more than you might dislike it, though I am very willing to compromise.

I was in the same game as Charles Bloodgrave. Would love another shot at RPing Vigilance as I love how odd he turned out. If you'd accept Investigator from the Advanced Class Guide, that'd be awesome, but if not, I'll remake him as a bard or something.

Edit: Since no Tieflings, I'll change that too. His crazy doesn't come from just demon blood. Pretty sure he's schizophrenic.

Dotting for interest. Always a huge fan of Lovecraft and Ravenloft.
Thinking about a dwarfen melee type either pure fighter or inquisitor. Have to meditate over it ;-)

Liberty's Edge

Just wanted to say good luck with this campaign. It's definitely my favourite paizo AP to date and the first book probably ranks as one of the best low level modules I've ever played or run.

My own game of this on these boards has been running over a year now and I'd encourage any players who get selected for this to stick with it even if YSB's posting schedule seems slower than you're used to because it's a very intriguing and rewarding path.

Good luck all and hope you have some creepy fun!

Zadrol Taladia was recently selected into another Carrion Crown game that died down again after a week. I'd love to try him out. Note however that he is of LE alignment which doesn't make him a crazy maniac but a rather ruthless academic...

I will adjust his stats to reflect a 25 point buy shortly.

May I present Unbeugsam, Dwarven Inquisitor of Desna at your service.
Have to work on the backstory a bit but apart from that I think he is good to go.
P.S. Helikon here

Dot. Australian gamer here with several active PbPs (so a slower pace suits me just fine. I can generally post daily across several games, but not keep up a greater pace than that. That said, I love having the opportunity to play a half dozen different roles every other afternoon, and would love to add one more. Besides that, Carrion Crown is one of the few AP's I've never read or played in, so I'll be going in completely blind.

Ustalav is the perfect setting for a half-orc, and I'd like to play just that. (moreover I have active members of most other core races right now and would like to pull off the hat-trick!).

I want to play a frontliner with a high handle animal skill, a surly gravedigger with two vicious guard dogs to ward off the lynch mobs. I'm uncertain what class just yet, either a huntmaster cavalier, a ranger or a fighter. (It's really a question of whether I mind my hounds becomming window-dressing at later levels. I'd probably not want to take them into every dungeon, only where it's appropriate. And having a pair of dogs to howl at the moon, bark at shadows and die horrific deaths to yet unseen monsters will add a hell of a lot to the horror atmosphere, so having them only be 1HD trained animals won't necessarily disappoint me too much). Depending on the makeup of the party I might forgo darkvision for skilled. A bit of a handicap (or not, considering how many races are given darkvision these days), but I want to play by everybody elses rules when it comes to light. I feel like it will add a lot to the spookiness of this game.

Anyway, checking in with a partial submission. It needs a bit of refurbishing (I'd begun a similar human character for another game but not completed it before recruitment ended), and an ustalav-appropriate backstory, but I should have it done by weeks end. I've also given the heads up to a few of my long time roleplay buddies for a chance to play together. I hope Raegun fits the vision you have for the game.

I would love this opportunity to play a dhampir bladebound (no kensai) magus. I'll try to have him for you by Thursday. No copy and paste here, I'll make him up from scratch just for this.

Zadrol and Vigilance were both in the game that sadly ended before it started.

*Waves*

Everything's been updated for you minus a question I sent to your inbox. I don't feel it's anything major and is a trait that would work well with Charles' heritage, so it'd be awesome if you'd allow it. Once that's accounted for my submission is complete and I'll look forward to your response! :)

Sovereign Court

Thursday huh?
One night hunter coming right up.

Envoy's Alliance

submitting this character, just have to update him a little, to fit the campaign and theme.

Grand Lodge

Zelda would love to get into this AP. I will update her stats to 25 points tonight. And good luck everyone!

@Yog - Just to inform you (in case you don't spot it, being new to this forum, easy to do), I sent you two PMs regarding private ideas I have for Aliseya in this campaign. Sorry for the length, don't mean to overwhelm you, I just have a lot of creative ideas for this character.

@Lord Charles - Howdy, I played briefly with you in a short-lived RotRL PbP here several months ago. I played Awarthannen the Forsaken, the elf magus.

@nightdeath - Fancy seeing you here. :)

I have actually run the first two modules of the AP before (tabletop, not online) and things went really well until my four adventurer group encountered a TPK and decided they wanted to be a little less scared for a change (we then ended up playing Paranoia for a while; fear was replaced by massive amounts of mistrust). To address some other questions:

Vigilance: The investigator archetype from the APG is acceptable.

Lord Charles: Got your PM, shot one back.

Aliseya: I got your PMs and sent a response back on the matter.

Prof. Dr. Zadrol: I'm not accepting evil PCs, and as my original post indicated, I'm very firm on that.

I think that's all the questions I've seen crop up thus far.

And JamZilla, much appreciation for the encouragement. I'll have to take a gander at your thread at some point to see how you're doing it if you don't mind. I always like getting other GM perspectives on modules and the like.

I do have to agree that the Haunting of Harrowstone is probably one of the better modules I've ever seen for a fantasy-style game. The amount of creative situations just jammed in there were kind of overwhelming my first read-through.

Dark Archive

Any problem if I have played some of this AP in the past? I believe I an keep player knowledge from character knowledge if I am selected. I did love this setting.

No problem. Zadrol won't work with good alignment so best of luck on your recruitment. I'm sure you'll find plenty good submissions seeing that we had a great roster in the last recruitment drive.

Ok, I think I've settled on a Wizard, likely with the Teacher's Pet trait. I'm not usually one to go in for full arcane but the secrets of Tar-Baphon sound too good to pass up.

Not that he'll enjoy any of it, Whispering Tyrant gives him the creeps! He'll be more of the belief that by understanding the horror that has befallen Ustalav we might learn how to further heal some of the damage.

I'll set myself to character creation this evening!

I'm not opposed to people having played before, especially since I have a few twists planned that deviate a little from the storyline. I've taken a couple months to go through the whole AP and make notes where applicable.

Envoy's Alliance

All done, fixed up the character to include 25 buy points, have a campaign trait and to fit into a horror theme campaign. I kept most of my original background, but added to it.

I'd love to play a cleric of Pharasma in a carrion crown campaign.

I'm at work right now but will sort out the crunch and background story for this character during my commute home this evening (approx 4 hours from now).

Dark Archive

Cool. I think I would love to play a Paladin of some type. Your generosity in races and archetypes will make me research my options quite a bit. :)

Lots of good candidates, it looks like! Also, I wonder if the Professor secretly had a death wish considering how many people seem to have saved his life (including myself)! ;)

*edit* Added my hexes to my character sheet because I forgot to do it yesterday.

Ooh, ooh! Changeling Paladin of Shelyn here. Concept originally specifically for Carrion Crown. Will have a more up-to-date post later today.

Really thinking of rolling up an arcane character now instead of what I previously planned, however, I have not ever played one and don't know how it would turn out. Really wanting to get into this though.

Dark Archive

Ah, ya gotta go and grab my paladin spot already. I have not even built him yet. ;)

Sure thing bro. We are around halfway through the second book at the moment.

If you've taken a few months to make your own notes on the the AP as a whole then I'm sure you have very definite ideas about the plot and where you're going to make tweaks. But, if you want to bounce some ideas around just send me a PM - I know I'd appreciate the opportunity to do that every now and then.

I'm interested in this AP and will submit a human oracle of stone tonight.

If an orc paladin is completely out of question, please let me know so that I don't spend hours writing a cool background only to get outright rejected.

Both orc and paladins are viable options, so I don't see why you couldn't combine the two with some clever background. I won't reject anything outright as long as it conforms to what it is that I outlined in my initial post. The character is what matters in terms of what I will pick. Based on the response, it looks like it's going to be a full six-person grouping. Kind of glad I set off an earlier cut-off point.

Here is my Orc Ranger, for your consideration.
Going to spend a little time reading up about Ustalav and reviewing the Player Companion in order to give him a rich background. Will post back as soon as it's done.
Had to jump at this chance to play a full-blown Orc...

Charles is 100% complete and ready to go! :)

Aliseya - Hey! I remember you. Hope all's been well!

Grand Lodge

Zekda us ready to go. Please let me know if you see anything you would like me to change.

Tossing my hat into the ring.
Both fluff(done pending revision) and crunch(in progress) under the alias.

TL DR version
Human core fighter. Taking the "On the payroll" trait. Future direction will be dependent on how the campaign goes but I am looking at the Fast learner and the other human racial feats. I like the the luck and versatility theme they have.

Me.
Player in a few Pbp's for the last while. Had to drop out of a Carrion Crown game somewhere in the first book, but that was a dog's age ago and I remember nothing.

I LIKE THE SLOWER PACE!! Part of the reason I had to drop the other CC game was that the GM and players wanted a faster paced game and that was causing issues.

Best of luck everyone.
