Wati ya thinkin'?

Mummy's Mask

I have a question. Is Wati meant to be a base of operations for the PCs? It seems like they will be here a lot. Also, one of my players wants to make a move on Sebti. Does she feature prominently in future installments in any way that would prohibit me from allowing that relationship?

Thanks.

Wati is the setting for the first two adventures. After that, the PCs leave, though they are called back for a short time in the fifth adventure. As for Sebti, her role continues in the second adventure, but after that, she does not reappear in the AP.

So perhaps that relationship might not work out. Thanks Rob for the help.

Just because she doesn't reappear in the AP as written doesn't mean she cannot reappear in your home game. If your players take a shine to a specific NPC, find opportunities to keep them involved in the story, even if it is a long distance romance as the lovestruck heroes fights to save Osiria.

I'm going to put this in spoilers, since this delves into some upcoming plot points, but mikeawmids is totally right.

Spoiler:

The PCs are called back to Wati in Pathfinder #83, The Slave Trenches of Hakotep. As written, they are contacted by a friend they make in the second adventure, a Pharasmin priest named Ptemenib. This connection works fine for most groups, but if one of your PCs actually strikes up a relationship with Sebti, it provides a much more personal hook for them to come back to save the city in the fifth adventure.

And even though Sebti doesn't have a written role later in the AP, the PCs could still use her as a contact in the third adventure (they leave Wati in that adventure, but just to go to a neighboring city that's not that far away. It gets a little harder in the next two adventures, where the PCs are traipsing through the desert, but sending spells and the like could work to keep a long distance romance going, and once the PCs get access to teleport, the character can pop back to Wati to visit her when the fancy strikes.

In closing, it will take some additional work on your part, but it could be a rewarding roleplaying experience. I say go for it!

Sold! Again, my thanks.

Absolutely agreed with mikawmids and Rob. Any time a player gets attatched to an NPCs is more than just cause to keep that NPCs around and emphasized if need be, regardless of what's actually written. :)

(and with PCs, you never know just who they'll gravitate towards ;) )

Definitely! In my Rise of the Runelords campaign, by far the most popular, recurring NPC is a goblin that the lizardman monk redeemed during the assault on Thistletop in book 1. That goblin (and his mates) have gotten the heroes out of some scrapes since then, lemme tell you! :D

In my Burnt Offerings/Jade Regent game, random encounter goblin turned into the wizard's sidekick and became a pistolero. Charging the squishy spellcaster seemed like such a good idea, until the mighty Dirk, armed with a brace of double-barreled pistols, pops out of his backpack!

As to OP's question, nothing I've seen in part 2 would prevent a relationship from working.

*Edit, anyone have thoughts on how a relationship with Unwrapped Harmony would work/go?

Ideally very weird and neat. I really dug that character and her group's goals when they showed up in the Wati article, and am really happy she and her crew showed up as probably non-hostiles.

Her likely fascination with a potential love interest's funerary plans could make for some rather creepy conversations. Heck, the fact that she knows she can't actually be buried with non-darkfolk love interest might prove to be a real source of angst for her to deal with.

Having someone vouching for the dark folk and going against the grain as far as how Wati views them could count for a lot. Could prove rather scandalous too in the eyes of Wati's society.

"What mummification method is your favorite? I really like the late kingdom style. They're so life-like. Almost as though they could awake up at anytime."

"As a rule, I don't think about it. Mummies are creepy."

*Sigh* "I think about it all the time."

*Eyes her burial-shroud aesthetic* "We've noticed."

Can humans and dark folk breed? I'd say no, but this is fantasy and humans are one-size fits all. Alternate source of fetchlings perhaps?

Perhaps the more important question is do we know what they look like under the wrappings?

Impression I got was they don't unwrap, ever, so I don't think we do.

I say they've got to be able to breed. After all, those shadow bloodline sorcerers have to come from somewhere, no?

Gurgle the rescued goblin of the birdcruncher tribe. By far our favorite NPC in our RotRL as well! He was part companion, part pet, part troublesome nuisance.

Neat to hear another group did this.

The Boggard in Kingmaker became the greatest NPC in Golarion

so yeah...its your groups game...go with it!!

Dark Archive

On the rescuing goblins side discussion, in one of our campaigns (Jade Regent, maybe?) the party rescued a baby goblin and carried him around for a bit. But they couldn't figure out what to do with it, so they just took it back to it's (now empty because they killed all the other goblins) camp, gave it a knife and went "Well, good luck!" Too bad the campaign fell apart a bit later because of work schedules, because I had this weird idea for an angry goblin with abandonment issues. lol

I always find it fascinating the NPCs the players can get attached to. I find, a lot of time, players get invested in the most random people and more than once, they will ignore the fleshed out NPCs in favor of some random side NPC. I once even had a game where an NPC who originally didn't even have a name became a major side plot and a source of friction (although, good and RP fill friction) between two players.

In my Carrion Crown Campaign the very shy Paladin fell in love with Kendra, I went along with the change and had Kendra kidnapped in the last book...major motivation I tell you.

I'll be starting the adventure path tomorrow with 6 players. The issue I found was that I did not like the that the characters were all in Wati and familiar with each other standing amongst the crowd waiting for the lottery to start. The hook that came up with was that the characters were all in their respective towns and heard the Town Crier announcing information about the Necropolis being opened up. The PC's started out all north of the inner sea and when we finally sit down to start play they will have found themselves in the port city of Almas trying to book passage on a ship (which I name Babbling Wench). The catch is that the ship is fashioned after an old Tea Clipper will be carrying a large sum of money being transferred from Almas's central bank to the Absalom central bank (6 chests of 120K Lion coins or PP). The characters will not have the money and find themselves press ganged into working as a security detail for the quartermaster and Captain who are the only ones that know of the contents of the cargo. the first morning at sea a Pirate Brigantine will be sighted breaching a fog bank with the weather gauge to try and catch the players ship before it can turn around. I feel like this will be what binds the characters together as I did not want to go with the overplayed bar fight. Lots of Wisdom, fortitude, strength and dexterity checks will be made. After that encounter they will get to Absalom, then onto Sothis and finally onto Wati via a caravan of merchants. Should be lots of Fun!!!!

I've found that, whether it's an AP/Super-module or your own campaign, three dimensional NPCs are part of what gives players motivation in the story. Always a good thing.

Side note: It wouldn't hurt for the APs to (systematically) mention or mark which NPCs need to be left somewhat untouched as to not disrupt their future appearances. A total nice-to-have though at the most.

Scarab Sages

The two NPC's that matter here for latter books are both noted in the books that their fates are in future books. There are even suggestions there for what to do if said NPC's meet other fates.

Agreed. I meant more of a consistent symbol so that's it's also obvious when they will not be seen again (i.e. "I wonder if Paizo just isn't mentioning it here...")
