anti magic field

Rules Questions

Me and a buddy are arguing the effect of anti magic field on insintaneous spells. Can someone help me settle this debate?

I say you can't cast instantaneous spells in an anti magic field, but you can cast them outside of one, after which they are unaffected by anti magic field

Hes thinking you can cast instantaneous spells inside the anti magic field

If the casting happens inside the field, nothing happens.

I'm struggling to see how casting a spell isn't "using it within".

It is being used within it. You are still perfectly capable of casting it, but even an instant spell is suppressed once casting is complete. Hense why I said nothing happens.

Give us an example of a specific instantaneous spell that may or may not be affected in the field. As I understand instantaneous, the effect happens and then there is nothing more to track. There is no duration.

Antimagic field is a terrible way to protect yourself from casters, but not quite *that* terrible. Instantaneous Spells cast inside the field will be suppressed as would any other spell. The line "An antimagic field suppresses any spell or magical effect used within, brought into, or cast into the area, but does not dispel it." indicates that trying to use a spell inside will be suppressed. However the line noting instantaneous conjurations immunity is talking about once the effect already exists as seen here:

The effects of instantaneous conjurations are not affected by an antimagic field because the conjuration itself is no longer in effect, only its result.

The fact that this line indicates the conjuration has to do some work further reinforces that you can't cast the spell while you are actually within the antimagic field.

I was replying to the OP. I agree entirely.
