1st edition orintal adventures feel products for pathfinder

Product Discussion

I would like to run an oa adventure for my group. I know some classes are on pathfinder (samurai, ninja) but I am looking for shukenja, yakuza, bushi, and any adventures that are out there. I really liked the old honor system, families, and the like too from 1st edition. The whole ki abilities for everyone were also cool. Anyone seen anything that I could pick up?

Shukenja are clerics or oracles.
Yakuza are rogues.
Bushi are fighters.

Remember, you can rename or reflavor classes with ease; there's no need to create new classes just for Asian themes.

You would have to adjust for ki abilities, or local knowledge for yakuzas for example? How about adventures?

Also more monsters?

Rite Publishing's Kaidan setting of Japanese horror (PFRPG) has its own versions of some of those classes, plus 'in character' backstory and culture, traits, feats, spells, equipment for the following:

Way of the Samurai (PFRPG) - includes archetypes for Paladin (yamabushi) which is closer to an authentic shugenja, though nothing like OA 1e shugenja, but also includes 4 archetypes for samurai, Ranger (yojimbo) and Origami Wizard (onmyoji). 2 prestige classes - Mosa (defender) and Bugyo (aristocratic leader).

Way of the Yakuza (PFRPG) - includes archetypes for Bard (moso), Fighter (yakuza bushi), Rogue (bakuto - gambler) and (kyodai - yakuza brother), and Wizard (horimyo - tattooist). Prestige class - Machi-yakko (yakuza mob boss).

In the Company of Kappa - includes racial archetypes for Cleric (kappa kannushi), Fighter (kappa bushi), and Bone-Breaker (paragon class).

In the Company of Henge - includes racial archetypes for Hengeyokai for versions (dog, badger, cat, rat, monkey, racoon and hare: Barbarian (emishi), Druid (kannushi) and the Mushakemomo (paragon class).

In the Company of Tengu - includes racial archetypes for Cavalier (tenguhatamoto), Fighter (tengubushi), paladin (tenguyamabushi), and Hishoken (paragon class).

Kaidan also features a Haunts Guide, an adventure site, 3 one-shot adventures and a full introductory trilogy of modules called the Curse of the Golden Spear, with both GM's and Player's setting guides coming soon! Over a dozen new monsters are included in the various modules - we will be working on a Kaidan Bestiary at some point.

Adventures would be whatever you want them to be.

Knowledge (Local) is a class skill for rogues, IIRC.
As far as ki stuff goes, a lot of that can simply be flavor text, but take a gander at the Youxia archetype-for-almost-every-class here ...

Kaidan offers a free one-shot adventure called Frozen Wind with ice oni, yuki-onna (snow woman demon) and frozen zombies.

Thanks

Legendary Games has some things for a Far East campaign (most, but not all, is designed to work for the Jade Regent AP from Paizo)- it is located HERE. Of particular note is the Way of Ki, which provides a way for any class to get ahold of Ki.

Little Red Goblin Games are offline at the moment (coming back soon, so I hear), and they also have some products in their Heroes of the East lines, as well as Dragon Tiger Ox, which is different from 1eOA, but worth a looksee (interesting in DTO is the Ki Domain for divine casters...)

I'm thinking there are some other things out there as well; probably products I don't own.

Um, it looks like the funding period is over, unless I'm missing something somewhere?

Its definitely over, but just pointing it out so you know what's coming up next.

Aside from the other links posted, here's a link to most of the available Kaidan products, as well as our Haunts Guide (in a different section).

Ok, I just thought maybe there was some outside crowdsourcing going on that I was not aware of :) In any case, I look forward to the release of the Campaign/ Setting book (and would have backed it via Kickstarter, had I known of such things at the time when it was running) :)

A Fistful of Denarii has some material inspired in part by OA. Specifically, the Corbie serves as a bushi, the Martial Artist works as a kensai or a lightly-armored samurai, and the Knight works as a samurai. There are also some feat options to turn any character into an unarmed attacker.

Monk Reborn, aside from freshening up the monk, gives you forest hanyou, who are similar to OA's spirit folk.

Spirit Folk, you say?
*looks at link*
Two bucks? Heck yeah.
*purchased*

For whatever reason the Way of the Samurai (PFRPG) product link above pointed to this thread instead, so I reposted the link. This is a great product to start with in support for an OA styled game, that I wanted to insure I pointed to the correct place... (read the reviews, and the reviews for all our products.)

Instead of Wujen which were based on Korean hedge wizard, Onmyoji featured in this product were the licensed court wizards under the Imperial Shogunate of Japan, so much more authentically Japanese than wujen.

Dark Archive

You could always convert 3e oriental adventures, it runs on the same system as PF.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I forgot to mention before, PF has an Honor system in Ultimate Campaign (and probably some other works as well, possibly in Jade Regent), and iirc in the Dragon Empires books. Also, Honor (and some different Golarion-Far East philosophies and such) get some treatment in Faiths & Philosophies, also by Paizo.

@RJGrady- hey, you forgot to mention that there are Zhú Xióng in that PDF too. Although not Old School OA, pandafolk will definitely make my daughter quite pleased :) Now, if we could just get a splatbook on the races in your aforementioned product... well, a man can dream, eh?

As soon as we get our products back up, you should check out heroes of the east 1,2,and 3 as well as dragon tiger ox of little red goblin games.

Way of the Samurai (PFRPG) includes an easy to include Honor system as well. Many of the included archetypes have features utilizing the included Honor system. Also in our upcoming GM's Guide to Kaidan includes Ancestral Relics (something akin to Weapons of Legacy) items that power up with the PC wielders, both your Honor score and event triggers are involved in leveling these items.

Is this a 'new' Honor system, or something compatible with Paizo's system?

Eh. I think the whole 'honor' thing should just be roleplaying, not mechanical.

I like these and Dragon Tiger Ox is amazing.

Another resource for such things that I really enjoy but haven't seen mentioned is the Heroes of the Jade Oath - I think it is the best sourcebook of it's type.. well maybe Dragon Tiger Ox.. but it's close.

Inasmuch as I agree with you, my experience has shown that 'mechanical' benefits tends to 'win' over 'good RP' in many games these days. A rather sad truism of the times, I'm afraid- probably has something to do with the XP bonus for good RP being nixed or something to that effect (or so I've heard- I still give extra XP for exceptional RP, rules be daߧed.)

The Kaidan Honor mechanics were created in 2009, long before Paizo came up with their own Honor rules. Our rules are very easy to use, close to Paizo's version, though slightly different.

@Zhayne - if active samurai players would always RP honor issues, then there certainly wouldn't need to be a mechanic for it - since not all tables even RP much at all, the mechanic was included to better portray samurai and the code of Bushido.

Also Way of the Samurai includes a treatise on Bushido, how samurai treat each other, when is seppuku appropriate and when it can be avoided, in addition to samurai honor is all covered.

Lots of stuff here! Thanks again to everyone, I will definitely be making some purchases soon.

Check out my Haiku of Horror: Autumn Moon Bath House product that I wrote, designed and created the cartography for, as a unique product that serve as a map product with an authentic 5 story Japanese bath house which serves as tavern, gambling house, inn and bathing facility. Its the Japanese version of the typical fantasy tavern with hand-drawn maps of all 5 floors, and a full room by room gazetteer. The product also include printable maps of the entire facility at 1 inch = 5 foot scale (60 printable pages).

It is also a mini-adventure or extended major encounter location with haunts, a unique ghost and a curse, with a staff of bath house owners, attendants and clients. The ghost comes pre-stated in CR 6, 10, 14, 18 and 22 to prove to be an effective opponent to many levels of adventure parties. This encounter is greatly inspired by The Grudge movie and really quite creepy.

It is intended as a ready to drop, plug-n-play into any Asian game - for Kaidan, Jade Regent, or any Asian home-brew game. I'm quite proud of this little product.

I don't know why I keep doing it, but I continue to post to this thread instead of the actual link... so here it is again, corrected, Haiku of Horror: Autumn Moon Bath House.

Looks like you found what you were looking for with our Kaidan stuff but if ever your looking for something that is less samurai drama and more Wuxia you can try Infernal Romance at Moon Temple for our Heroes of the Jade Oath setting.

I enjoyed writing them up. Still, the OP asked for old school Oriental Adventures feel, so I wasn't sure what the reaction would be to shilling my World of Kung Fu Pandacraft people.

Since I've never, ever, had anything at all to do with WoW, it was all new to me. I was actually more like, 'Hey! it's the Kung Fu Panda! Cool!'
