Hello and welcome to the board! I'll answer your questions as best I can, okay?
1) Plenty of people! Why, the recruitment board here has several games open for recruitment. Simply use the guidelines the GM's place in their first or second post on their recruitment page and make a character. If you have Hero Labs, it helps since you can port all the info to the website. Click 'My Account,' log in and on the left hand side you'll see a 'Messageboard Alias' section. Click 'create new alias', choose a name, then avatar, and click done! Then click on the new characters name on that page, click 'profile' on their page, add their profile!
A lot of info, but not actually that hard once you get used to it n_n
2) Most games from what I can tell do 'Play-By-Post', where the GM makes a custom thread for his campaign. You, as your character, post in the discussion and gameplay tabs. Don't post in them until the GM gives you the a-okay on it though <.< Other GMs use Skype, Roll20, or other means, but they will state which ones in their guidelines usually.
