"Keen" Composite Longbow in Dragon's Demand

Rules Questions

I originally posted this in the Modules forum, but it occurs to me that this might be a more appropriate place.

One of the items in the treasure horde given to players who complete Tula's Crypt in The Dragon's Demand is a +1 Keen Composite Longbow (+2 Str). This goes directly against the magic item rules that state that Keen is only applicable to melee weapons that deal slashing or piercing damage. Has there been any official word on this? What item should replace it?

That's interesting that have that in there. It should not have the Keen special ability. I would give it another SA. Maybe give it the Adaptive SA or a different +1 bonus like Flaming or Bane. I'm not sure what would be better; I have not read the adventure.

Interesting. It is listed on the chronicle sheet as well so it is obtainable in PFS. Well I know what I'll be playing if I ever decide to make another archer.

It's come up before. Chronicles and APs do occasionally break rules intentionally. It's kind of a reminder that even the CRB was not carved in stone.

The designers--and the GM--are free to make up items any way they see fit. The item functions as is and does not need to be replaced.

Huh. I wasn't aware of that. Well, it makes sense, I suppose.

Response from developer about this very item.

The item is fine. It's supposed to be something fun and interesting and neat that the PCs discover. The fact that it's not something directly out of the rulebooks helps to preserve the discovery and "wow" factor, frankly... something that, with the modern gaming conventions that imply all magic items could be theoretically purchased at magic shops if you have enough gold... has kind of gone missing from the game.

That's why when I run games I actually roll up items based on the size of the town if the module I am running doesn't already have preset items for the town the PCs are stopping at. If they are unsatisfied with the selection available, the rogue can take Black Market Connections :)

My archer Ranger was very excited when we found this.
It's his most prized possession now.

So if you bought this in PFS through the chronicle sheet, could it later be upgraded even further?

(I mean, it's quite nice, but if it's your primary weapon, at some point you may want to splurge even further if you have the money.)

For non-PFS, ask your GM.

For PFS, IMO, it should be, nothing in it is mysterious in price, or not priced by the standards. Nor is it named, so it just uses a rules item that is normally not allowed for longbows, but has pricing which is actually followed by the item.

And, if you look at Mark's post, he references that additional enhancements would cost more, as normal, which is a strong implication that it can be enhanced further in PFS. Although I suspect that a lot of the original purchasers would start by putting the Adaptive property on it.

Sczarni

I don't see any reason why it could not be upgraded further.

John Compton says upgrading is A-OK (and is in fact something of a balancing factor):
