What are you looking for when participating in a living world?

Gamer Life General Discussion

There have been a couple of attempts to run a living world in the past. I am not referring so much to the ones running at conventions (or sequence of conventions for that matter), but to the ones not requiring the gathering of all players involved (Living Greyhawk and Living Forgotten Realms to name a few plus the ongoing Pathfinder Society scenarios although this is more an organized play type of game rather than an actual living world).

Anyhow, I am interested in hearing out what you guys think about these projects: what you liked and disliked if you participated, but mainly what features you would like to see if you participated now in a living world.

I look for a way in which my character, whether in life or in death, can matter to the world at large.

This is a very difficult thing to provide in a living world, though, given that there are so many characters. It's the same problem that MMOs struggle to solve. I don't want Raasid to be just another footnote in a dusty Chronicle somewhere; I want Raasid to be known for turning the tide at the Battle for the Three Lakes by climbing out onto one of the outer tower's faces and dropping onto the enemy giant's head for a desperate sneak attack, knowing that he'd never escape alive.

The absolute key to a good living world is that the player's choices matter in ways that make visable changes to the world. A tactic I've had much success with in a LARP I run is to make the good guys and the bad guys not clear cut. Everyone has their own motives for wanting to do things, and if the find the magical weapon that will save the kingdom from the orcs, it might be better to give it to the head priest than to give it to the general. And the Orcs have a completely justified reason for invading the kingdom, so maybe the PCs will side with the Orcs once they learn the truth.

Then take the choices the PCs make and incorperate it into the next round of adventures. With a large playership, sometimes you have to just take reports from each table, and the ending that gives the most results is the official one. But unique events(usually at cons) provide a special chance for players to affect the story. Maybe there is some big battle, and some tables are the cavalry section, with special mission, and another table is the spell caster support, who can swoop in and save other tables that are struggling if they suceed in their mission. And one table could be a group of assassins sent after the enemy commander. When character do something meaningful, give them actual rewards. Being awarded the rank of captain because you lead team to intercept the cavalry charge that would have brokent through to the command tent is a cool reward, especially when you know that no other character will have a chance to accomplish that goal again.

I am glad you think player decisions are significant in a living world, I feel the same way: I 've played in a couple of living worlds but always left frustrated. My character never mattered even the tiniest bit...

I do believe there is an answer to players looking for a living world where each player choice can make a difference; where a party killing a mighty dragon gets its PC names written in the setting's history. A setting where each adventure the players play depends on their characters previous choices and their desires.
