Does anybody name their weapons?

On the rare times I get to play and not DM, I name my characters' primary weapons, at least. I'm currently playing a Blade Bound Magus whose broadsword is called "Reignbreaker".

The Exchange

Grog name his weapon "Scythe." It only name needed.

My bladebound magus has a blackblade called numeralis.

In my warhammer fantasy roleplay game, I have named my shield Barbara (she has saved my life several times).

My inquisitor had an intelligent pistol called the Voice of Groetus. Boom.

It can be fun to name items after their former owners. Thus, even a low-level character might proudly brandish a "bow of the orcs," or whatever.

My vital striking half-Orc alchemist called his keen falchion Bifurcatior.

I was planning to go all training day and name my next uber weapon, " The B!@%~". Crit time" ain't that a..."

Most of my martial characters have at least 1 named weapon.

My favorites were a Cleric of Shizuru who had a katana named "Kogo No Ha" (IIRC), which means Blade/Sword of the Empress and a Paladin who had a greatsword named "Honorbound". There was also a Fighter who consistently used Trip, Disarm, Cornugon Smash and other crowd-controlling tactics who named her bardiche "Black Cat", saying that the weapon brought bad luck to whoever it hit.

I have a Tiefling Ranger/Wizard/Eldritch Knight with a +4 Adapative Glamored Composite Longbow as his bonded object that he has named "Angel's Harrowing" since Outsider(Good) is his favored enemy.

EDIT: This character is in a Ways of the Wicked campaign.

Sczarni

My pfs #1 has a greatsword named "Old Betsy"

My pfs #2 has a weapon named "Sweet Sonja" that when it gets a few more enhancements will be: "Sweet Red Sonja, Holy Avenger"

I know. Too cheesy and unoriginal.

I made an Ifrit Fighter/Inquisitor for the Way of the Wicked campaign. His name was Blayze Pascal, he used a short spear name Killabar.

My current Paladin, who uses the epithet "Bellknight" has a glaive that does sonic damage that he calls "Clapper" (a clapper being the dangly part of a bell that strikes when you swing it).

I've had several named weapons across several systems over the years. But not everything gets a name - usually if I think the weapon's significant enough to the story, it gets a name. From the fairly generic Hellsbane (+4 holy bane:evil outsiders falchion) an old fighter/cleric of mine had commissioned before going into Hell to rescue a certain trapped paladin, to Gunangadhe (I may be a little off on that, it's been a while - different system, but essentially a tribal relic greatclub carved almost like a small totem pole). I actually don't even remember most of my named weapons now. I'm pretty sure I named one George as well, but for the life of me I can't remember what that weapon even was..

Starfinder Charter Superscriber

I name my weapons when the mood strikes me.

I have a Ranger in a Kingdoms of Kalamar game who is from Drhokker (basically Scandinavia) who named his fighting spear 'Wing-Fang'. (The fighting spear, which we'll probably rename 'hewing spear', is a custom weapon we made. It is a martial double weapon with 1d8 x3 S or P on one end and 1d6 x2 B on the other, 20 ft range.) The name is written on my character sheet in runes.

This thread also reminds me- a Deck of Many things turned my Elven Summoner's rapier into an intelligent weapon. I really need to get on the task of naming that one.

Silver Crusade

Talos, lore warden and paladin of Erastil, wields Heaven's Chase, a +1 adamantine/+1 cold iron meteor hammer.

My paladin uses his families ancestral longsword, Brightflame.

I had a dwarven weapon smith & crossbow fighter inspired by Dwarf Fortress; every weapon he built had a usually compound noun name along with some engravings or goofy decorations, like spikes of cloth or images of cheese.

His first crossbow was named The Verdant Combatant, and when he had confirmed enough kills, he even gave himself a title, introducing himself as "Duthnur Libashdurad the Stalwart Purveyor of Quarrels".

It eventually got to the point where the others asked if they could name the weapons he built for them.

I was curious if anyone had the habit of giving their weapons names? Perhaps not your non-magical javelin or favorite cold iron dirk, but the first time you get a powerful weapon that could really change your character's life.

I'll go first: My half-orc Inquisitor's first magical GreatAxe was called Axe of Contrition (it was almost Axe of Kindness, but the Contrition seemed to fit better with an Inquisitor).

Anyone else?

My paladin's magical scimitar is called Thunderfire

The Exchange

Odessa - Never forget!

I sometimes name weapons. If it's not a weapon using character I might name another piece of significant gear. For instance, a powerful wizard might have a named bonded object.

Lorand, my gnome barbararian from Rise of the Runelords, named everything he owned, especially his weapons. His +2 adamantine greataxe was named Knock (Stand back, I'm gonna cast Knock!), and his +4 gluttonyforged mithril greataxe (he followed the golf bag method of adventuring) was named Diplomacy. The tiny returning dagger was named Thumbtack (and was his go-to weapon whenever he was swallowed whole), the skinsaw mask was named New Friend, his spiked breastplate was named Undies and his codpiece was named Monkey.
...Lorand had an interesting relationship with things.

My alchemist found a masterwork blunderbuss (prototype) in our Way of the Wicked campaign and called it: Gotterdämmerung!

Very appropriate :-)

In the meantime, it's the equivalent of a +3 weapon and it can kick ass!

A half-orc fighter of mine named his greataxe Blood Wind.

Some lucky crits painted the walls of more than a couple "boss" enemy sanctums.

Die Gotterdämmerung wird schiessen!

I know players who have issues naming their PC nevermind a weapon....

One of my old characters was a rogue turned pirate/swashbuckler type who alternated between his rapier Kidneyseeker and his cutlass Gutspiller.

Yeah, came up with that name after watching Iron Sky :-)

As a player I have only really named my weapons if they are magical. And then the names wildly vary, based on magic abilities, or the primary creatures I'm fighting or after an important event in the PCs life, etc. And this is only with my one adventure group.

The other players in my second group sometimes name weapons.

Dark Archive

I had a player who played a rogue, that never pronounced his R's. He named his knife Dirk, but pronounced it without the r. He always yelled at his foes to "Come here and let me put my Dirk in you!"

Back in 3.5 my drunken master and aspiring "god of cookery", Chow Man Tsui, wielded a Monk's Spade called "The Pizzastick" (like a pizza peel) and used it both to get pizza out of the oven and to shovel coals for BBQ.

I'd also like to correct an earlier post by pointing out that Lubomyr Romanovych's "Cruel Sword of Justice" is actually an Aldori dueling sword rather than a longsword (though mechanically there's no difference since he doesn't use Weapon Finesse)

In HBO's Game of Thrones the Hound recently expressed a rather negative opinion of people who name their weapons. Arya didn't seem discouraged though.

Jade Regent Ulfen Fighter - Longsword - Heart Ripper
PFS Black Blade Magus - Longsword - Mournglaive

My female half-elf Inquisitor of Saranrae uses an Elven Curve Blade she called "Deliverance"

My dwarf barbarian has an adamantine +2 dorn degar he called "Second Thought". To wit: His first thought was to try to resolve conflict with diplomacy, but to be truthful, he always went with his Second Thought.

My half orc rogue has two gladius (gladii?) he calls "First Kiss" and "Sweet Release".

How about naming a large club "Big Stick", then maxing out your ranks in Stealth?

The Exchange

Slightly off-topic, I think I'll drop an NPC weaponsmith in my campaign that has carried this habit to its next logical step.

Unnerving Smith: "Let's see, which of the kids would you like to buy? You're a shortsword type, so let's see who I have available. Cletus; Annie Sue; Morthrog the Gutter; Snicker-Snack; Angelina; Irving; and Six-String. Although between you and me, I wouldn't buy Cletus. He's a nice sword but he's kind of funny in the head, if you know what I mean."

I looked at this thread just to see if someone quoted the Hound from Game of Thrones.... thank you Devilkiller!

I try occasionally but nothing will ever top the "Foe Hammer" so by comparison mine feel lame to me.

As a GM, i name every weapon or armor stronger than +1 that my players find, and they learn the item's name during the identification process.

Verdant Wheel

I named my elf fighter/wizard composite longbow (that is his arcane focus) Trinity.

Have a high level alchemist who uses an +5 injection dagger he calls Telson

Depends on if the character would name the weapon. My rogue did name his custom-order short swords into Fang of Ice and Fang of Thunder. And the bow to Frosted Lightning. Also my gunslinger named his pistol after his wife.

Thronin my Taldan Fighter has his Social Skill Set.

A Greatsword named Diplomacy
A Mighty Composite Longbow named Messenger
A Heavy Mace called Negotiator
And a dagger called Advisor.

My Andoran magus as a Tienese Blackbade Katana which has the Tienese characters on it that translate to "Freedom's Night".

In Living Arcanis, Naming a weapon was the final required step in sealing it's enchantment.

I can think of only 2 weapons I've ever bothered to name in many years.

The first was a +5 Ghost Touch Keen Icy Burst Longsword named Entropy. Then it became intelligent and things got wierd.

The other was a non-masterwork club my druid name Boomstick. It didn't need to be special when Shillelagh and Power Attack got me 2d6+9. So many Tier 1-2 monsters got their heads caved in with that club on the first hit.

Scarab Sages

One of my characters had a magic glaive that I "obtained" from a hobgoblin chief. It wasn't named, but it did have "Point this end towards enemy" etched on the blade in goblin.

Your character should inexplicably name the glaive 'Claymore', despite that being a type of sword.
