How many ranks can you put into a single skill per level?

I have always played it that you can add one rank to a single skill per level. However the rules are not clear about this.

I have a player with a 13th level Ranger that decided he wanted to start crafting magic weapons, taking the Craft Magic Weapon feat. He had never put any ranks previously into Spellcraft. He wanted to put all his level ranks into just Spellcraft. I allowed it since the rules were silent on the subject, as far as I can tell.

Is there any clarity on he subject?

You can add as many skill rnks per level as you like, but you can't have a rank higher than your cahracter level.
So, you were correct in how you handled things.

Up to your total new level. Or up to the number of skill points you gain... whichever is less.

If you have 10 skill points to use, and just hit level 3, the most you could add in any skill is 3 (assuming you had 0 in it before).

Alternatively, if you just hit level 15, and only gained 5 skill points, the most you could possibly add to any skill is 5... the number of points that you have.

You can put any number of ranks into a skill when you level up, as long as total skill ranks is equal to or less than Character Level.
