The Art of Ambush

We haven't heard (read) much about how this tactic will be implemented in game.

It will most likely be skill based.

It may be alignment based or have an alignment shift impact.

It probably requires stealth.

It may require special structures.

It may be buffed or debuffed based on terrain.

It may have different requirements based on attack type (ranged, melee, combined, siege, etc.)

It may have faction elements.

It may be restricted to certain class abilities, roles,or even skill levels.

A counterweight could be reputation-gain for the merchant for a succesful haul of a caravan without being ambushed.

To add to the validity of ambushing and banditry.

Ambush is not just a tactic used or useful for bandits. Raiding parties, war parties, armies, law enforcers, the "Good" the "Bad" and the "Ugly" should be able to train and use ambush as a tactic.

Ambush is also not strictly PVP related. NPC Mobs, especially escalation mobs, will be move and expanding their "infection". Ambush can and should be a valuable tactic to be used against PVE targets as well.

I should probably refrain from answering in such threads.

At the moment I fear that even simple iterations of the Core-features may prove to be too difficult to implement in a satisfactory matter, and will be cut or phased out.

So when I see a post like yours about a single feature (that I would not consider truly core) that already could be complex enough to build an entire separate game around, I tend to approach it in a simplistic manner that could actually support one of the core features that really should make it into the game (in this case, Reputation).

So I try to lump it together with a feature that I can see get cut because they can not flesh it out enough(or is too "unfair").

What happened to the "Hideout" PoI?

What should Ambush do that isn't done simply by attacking suddenly from an unobserved position or unexpected posture?

I'm not sure, perhaps it should have some equal treatment as formation combat?

When I write "equal" treatment, I mean that it is equally layered or complex.

Frankly, I think that's all an ambush needs to be. It doesn't have to be (shouldn't need to be) a game mechanic.

In TT, where the players have some extended time to figure out their next action, it makes sense to put a limit on actions for characters that are caught flat-footed or surprised.

In a real-time situation, the ambushed characters will actually be surprised and the ambushing characters might have several combat actions before their targets respond effectively. It doesn't need more advantages than that.

I can also assure you that if you attack me, an ambush is not needed: I will panick for at least 5 rounds even when I see you waving a red flag from a mile away, and quit possibly during the entire fight.

When I played my druid in Everquest, even a PvE mob could make me Snare myself, then start trying to heal the monster instead of myself, and finally trying to run away, snared and with low Health, turning my back to a mob named "a Gnoll rogue".

@Tyncale - that's sort of the problem with stealth and surprise. Stealth is a game mechanic not based so much on player skill as character skill. In the TT, certain races and classes might have an advantage in not being surprised, on in an MMO that's very much a player skill and not a character skill. It's just the nature of the MMO format.

I like the idea of ambush being a formation thing, but I plan on using it even if the one-man party of Mooncalves lack such an option.

I'm hoping things like surprise attacks will have the ability to break up enemy formations, though. That gives small, independent groups the ability to have real impacts on pitched battles.

Look in the SAD thread for ambushes

SADs and Ambush are two separate things.

So, the new blinds system, that knocks people out of fast travel, AND give a stealth buff, have nothing to do with ambushes?

I could have sworn it would be a good idea for an ambush.

Especially since they don't necessarily require you to follow through with a S&D. <--- cool new way to write SAD.

Maybe there will be an ambush mechanic on top of the blind mechanic.

Hmmm... I think an ambush mechanic should give you some stealth and probably knock travellers out of fast travel.

Oh oh, it would be cool if it would let you like, inspect someone before hand also.

Totally cool.

Lets call it "Ambush-that-is-not-blind"

or we could just have blinds that don't put out SAD bonuses of any sort :I

Oh, the Blind, Stand, and Deliver Mechanic.

BSDM.

But yeah, a temporary placable object that gives the group who owns it a local benefit to stealth and the ability to slow and/or dismount local targets seems ideal for ambushes.
