Is taking a Faction Trait required?

It should be no secret that not are Faction Traits are worth taking - they are just not very good (Andoran's for instance). Another problem is that the traits for some factions (Taldor's for instance) imply that characters must be members of that nationality.

So, I ask, is taking a faction trait a requirement in the Pathfinder Society?

Short answer: No, just another option.

nope

To expand on this, the Faction traits are considered Campaign traits for purpose of the PFS campaign. This is an emphasis on the ruling of organized play that other Campaign traits, like ones for Rise of the Runelords or Reign of Winter Adventure Paths, are not accessable by any means.

Other than that, you have the options of Combat, Faith, Magic, Social, Race, Regional, Religon, Equipment, and Faction (PFS Campaign) traits that are legal as stated in the Additional Resources.

Also remember that Faction traits require having a book to back them.

As long as you remember that that book is the free Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play (currently v5.0), and is part of the Core Assumptions...

I believe that the intended was "Also remember that non-Faction traits require having a book to back them."

This I understand.

I was asking because the Andoran traits are simply inferior.

There are non-Faction traits available via the free Character Traits Web Enhancement.

Depends on your build. I have made a character Andoran just for Hunter's Eye, since I didn't want him to be an Elf and Bards don't get Longbow proficiency.

My cleric of Desna took the Explorer Andoran trait to get Survival as a class skill (since he is all about wandering around and finding new places). This was also in 2010 when there were a lot fewer traits from which to choose, but it suits him.

You are right. Not all faction traits, or any other traits for that matter, are created equal, and some are quite inferior compared to others. But, I sometimes take them if it fits the character concept, or just to tie them to the faction a little more than your average member. It's not always about the benefits...sometimes it is just for fun or role-playing opportunities :)

I thought Andoran's were some of the stronger ones actually. Recently took my first faction trait in a while - Shiv.
