So there is another thread raging about the Thunder and Fang feat, and one of the arguments has come down to, "How do you determine what size weapon a character can use?" So I decided I would start a new thread so we can FAQ that particular question.

How do you determine what size of inappropriately sized weapons a character can use?

The way I look at it, there are two possibilities.

1. You first determine what a character wields a weapon as, and then you can step up or down for inappropriately sized weapons. An example of this would be the bastard sword. A character with EWP (bastard swords) wields it as a one-handed weapon. You could then go up one step to a large bastard sword and it would be a two-handed weapon for that character, with the appropriate -2 penalty. Another example of this should be a character with the Thunder and Fang feat who is able to wield an earthbreaker as a one-handed weapon. You could then go up one step to a large earthbreaker which, for that character, would be a two-handed weapon.

2. You only look at where on the weapon table a weapon lands and then adjust it for size from there, ignoring any feats or class/racial abilities. With this method, you would first look at the earthbreaker and say it is exclusively a two-handed weapon, and if you go up one step is goes to unwieldable, no matter what feats or abilities you have.

So, which of these is correct?

2. Is correct.
The bastard sword is a one handed weapon which is why you can use a large one two handed, albeit with special training (EWP).

I'll click FAQ if only to end the T&F nonsense.

This, which is consistent with the Bastard Sword rulings.

Sorry, first post was worded poorly and there was very little difference between the two options. I have edited the post and your answers may have changed because of that.
