What is the action to drop an equipped shield?

Rules Questions

I have a paladin in my game who uses a heavy shield and a battle axe.

He wanted to unequip his shield, use lay on hands on himself and then power attack a goblin.

What action is it to drop an equipped heavy shield?

It is a move action.

Edit: Remember, you are not just holding a shield. It is strapped to your arm.

Move action to doff, free action to drop after it's doffed.

doff?

Doff is "to remove", usually used with clothing. To doff one's hat is to remove it.

Sczarni

Odd. D&D used Don and Doff. Pathfinder kept "Don", but got rid of "Doff". These are the linguistic precursors for today's "On" and "Off".

"he had doffed tie and jacket and rolled up his shirtsleeves"

While I'm not sure what 'doff' is, this brings up an interesting question I just noticed.

The rules say "Removing a shield from the arm and dropping it is only a move action."

But what if I want to put it away? Remove, then sling on back? Two move actions?

Edit: Ah... DOFF... was this in 3.5? I don't recall that.

If you wanted to stow the shield away after removing it, it would require another move action.

I'm probably thinking back towards 2nd Ed or earlier.

Huh. What page is stowing items on?

You might consider using a weapon cord. For the same Move Action, you can simply drop your battleaxe as a Free Action, use your swift to lay on hands, then use the Move Action to re-equip your Battleaxe. This way you retain your shield and it's protective bonus for the same action economy.

Whoa!

Somebody actually mentioned the Weapon Cord?

Start checking everyone's drawers for blood.

The river runs, and the thread drowns.

It's under the generic "manipulate an item" heading:

Moving or manipulating an item is usually a move action.

This includes retrieving or putting away a stored item, picking up an item, moving a heavy object, and opening a door. Examples of this kind of action, along with whether they incur an attack of opportunity, are given in Table: Actions in Combat.

What?

There is the Quickdraw Shield.

Even with the recent massive nerf, many still find the subject of the Weapon Cord, as something to bloody their undergarments.

Really? Who?

I would rather have them reveal themselves.

Like vegetarians, they will let you know.

I have asked the opposite of this before. I understand that donning a shield is a move, but is DRAWING a shield also a move, thus justifying the need for a QuickDraw shield?

I depends on who you ask. Some believe you have to draw (or rather, retrieve) and don a shield as separate actions others do not.

In either case, a QuickDraw shield, despite it's name, only decreases the time required to don the shield. If you have to draw(retrieve) it, it's still a move action
