improvised weapon / weapon focus

as the title implies im wondering if you can take weapon focus improvised weapon, I know you can have catch off guard and throw anything and they will remove the -4 penalty to using said improvised weapons, but my question is does that give you the proficiency required to then apply weapon focus to them?

It does not.

Two levels of Ranger, and you can take Weapon Focus with anything.

Even if you are not proficient.

I am really necroing this thread, there were some worse ones I could have grabbed from like 2010 but this one is alright, I am just wondering why not?

If I have Catch-Off Guard why couldn't I take Weapon Focus: Shovel? Its no worse a feat tax than exotic weapon proficiency.
