Does anyone care about a cool dying boon thread, if you were allowed to die for free

Example:

We should let Samurais kill themselves at 10th level (If they fail?) and get to 11th level for free, just to add dramatic flavor to the Society Games. We should RAW/Additional resource it...but just for this one specific window of time (lvl 10-11). I'm pretty sure after 30 games of credit we could creatively make a thread for each base and sub class "dying boon".

This would not be cooler than the "Risen" title some factions bestow on you, but Ninjas and Samurais...need more love...not from me of course..."I hate ninjas" but everyone else should throw ideas out to make dying more enjoyable for these weaker classes.

Rogues have been Abandoned by this game that I love, my 1st level Magus is a better Rogue than any rogue...I named him "Rouge" because new people both misspell and mispronounce this word really often.

He uses true strike (5ft step in) then improved disarm if that is legal? I do it unarmed (no whip no flail) because I want to be able to hold the weapon and I roll high enough to make the enemy drop everything in both hands all of the time.

I would never use the Steal Maneuver unless I was built like the pregen Merisel but modified for level 9.

Feel free to post "any" dying boon idea.

I like the "Good Lich" any spell caster at level 11 or 12. Wizard/Cleric/Sorcerer would be standard, but Druid? Neutral Lich? or Bard maybe?

All of it would be bragging rights...what's the epitaph? What do you want on your tombstone?..... Sausage or Pepperoni?

I agree that we should be creative, but remember in the movie Ammagedon when Ben afleck was telling Liv Tyler about the traits of the animal cracker being more qualifying as a "cookie" than a "cracker"... Liches to me will always be evil...

The bard's phylactery is "hidden behind the pile of bodies" ...of course but yes to the Samurai specifically.

Like in the Tom Cruise movie.."I am Samurai"..."and this is Sparta!"

Sepeku should be "only" the beginning....

"Highlander should be a class-type" Called it "The Pissed" (Survivors????) Whatever...the Native American word for crow...

But then you can do Player versus Player in special edition games for them. At the cost of one level, prerequisite.. you need one level with Craft - Macaroni & Cheese (1 rank at least).

I know it would be hard to change so much already set in stone. This game has an information overload for new players...This weekend Shark-Nado and the barbarian girlscouts with the "THIN mINTZ!!!!" battle cry don't care if their first game they died...having a fun time is the only goal.

It was so cute that one player tried to use diplomacy to take leadership of the party..(AAAAAWWWWWWWWWW!)She just didn't know that it was Shark-bait-Un-nah-nah's prerogative to do as she willed. Ironically there was a "ninja" in that party LOL!.

Doug is right, I do play a lot of pregens.

But we go epic or go home!!!
I mainly just try to create the pun then the character. POrkChop- half orc Monk...Ercy the Gnome..Gnome-ercy (no Mercy)..Mista-Mawangi..etc.

I admit it, I have softballing GM issues and TPK GMing concerns, I want dying to be "better" received.

You've heard of dying in PFS right? Maybe the Osirian faction boon title "The Risen" for 5 or 10 prestige points or whatever it is? I just thought that people take the dying part of the game really harshly sometimes. I was asking everyone if there were any creative ideas out there to make the "dying" aspect cool and the Samurai suggestion was an example. The Good Lich example was another was to die at level 11.

My apologies if no one would actually care to die, but failure in battle in Samurai lore is very dishonorable. I hoped to translate cool related stuff to "other" classes as well.

The way I was reading it was that people would kill themselves, such as through seppuku, and get a boon for it rather than dying naturally through scenario/module causes.

Quite frankly I don't really see what this will add to the community/society/game.

Yeah. What?

The idea of rewarding self-destructive (as distinct from self-sacrificing) behavior in characters seems like a HUGE potential trigger for players. I suppose it could work in a private game where the GM can find out the history and psychological sensitivity of the players in advance. However, in a public PFSOP situation you have no idea whether the players might have a history of suicide attempts, suicidal thoughts, or self-harm, family members with such, or other experiences that would make the subject triggering.

PFS tends to be "win or die," rendering intentional death unnecessary.

Players who die tend to dislike death because:
They have "I am the best no matter what" complexes;
The scenario/module had some relatively unfair CR in it;
A party member acted selfishly, causing serious harm to the rest of the group;
The GM didn't rule something properly;
The player wasn't given the opportunity to understand why he died.

Most of the above can be easily resolved via open channels of communication. "His AC was 30; his CHA was 28; the save DC was 26; no one made the spell craft to identify; you failed your save and had no immunities; is there anything ambiguous here?"

Players who min/max, hyper-optimize, whatever you want to call it, can (as in, some players exhibit this behavior) get used to trivializing high CR encounters. When something slips through the cracks and hurts their characters, it's like saying "Your failed as a person because your character wasn't invulnerable." It's ludicrous, but we all know it happens. Coddling players about character death doesn't make the process easier, and it patronizes those who are unaffected by character death. This is, after all, an extraordinarily variable game where my 5 strength, level 1 wizard can critically hit a dragon if that's how the dice roll.

So as far as I can tell this thread is about the the Osirion Faction vanity Risen Guard and expanding it or making something similar more widely available. But perhaps based on class rather than faction?

Kind of interesting, but as a loyal Osirion my response has to be "Hands Off! That is the only really cool vanity we get for being Osirion!"

I respect all of your opinions downerbeautiful makes an excellent point like in the scenario for the Temple of the Emperyal Enlightenment, one of "my" signature games...if public groups were exposed to certain gaming material it could be a hard sell for a good time.

I do not think I over focus on necromancy or the vile sway of haunts or ghosts beyond my numerous characters that are built on those themes. I do play Clerics 90% of the time, but I can take a hint and see how complicated this stuff could be.

Paladin of Baha-wHo? made me tap. You are right,why anyone would even go there?

I did think Seppeko (unsure of the spelling?) was epic, but I see why we don't use any of that in the game. Dark, Noir, Freaky(Black Waters), Foolhardy (Maybe) but I thought "The Risen" title was creatively powerful, but for the greater good I see the error of my suggestions clearly.

You Rock Ru-Sateph!!!!!!

I was, General Ghost(Cleric 7/Oracle/Inquisitor) diehard Chelaxian Hellknight Internal affairs- Judge Dredd Style!!! (Blood drinker - Soul eater)Spiritual Weapon/Blessing of Fervor OMG. I made this character for Venn Diesel, because the Witch Hunter was eh...

But now I'm just Grand Lodging it after the Disappeared when my mission was to complete the mission. I just play pregens now because we powergame exquisitely.

I'm sad that the spy versus spy, no one can see you do "xyz" was redesigned, but I want season six to be "WABBIT SEASON". I'm Demoned out ever since the Hellknight's feast. No Season six we should all be Aspis Consortium....another boon I'm very jealous of.

We play with the guy who bought the Assassin boon at gen con. I want to be a boon writer I guess.

Why did you have to share that?

I know this person and he plays and DMs almost every PFS sanctioned thing.

WHat does it matter what his profile has?

My guess is that this was a very elitist post trying to make this poster look less valuable because you disagree with how he organizes his profile.

If I am wrong I am sorry. If I am correct that is very obscene.

Post 18 is in character... and has more anachronisms, 4th-wall breakers, and pop culture references than I can make sense of.

I'm relieved that I am not the only one who is utterly baffled by this topic.

Scarab Sages

Big difference between a PC doing the heroic thing, and holding off a powerful foe, or army (Gandalf vs Balrog, Hector on the bridge to Rome, Benkei defending the Minamoto clan, etc),...

... and a player deciding he's 10th level, sees a boon effect he likes, and offing his PC, 'just because'.

Do the first, and the other players will probably pay for your raise dead out of their own pocket. And if the faction allows you to purchase a flavorful boon to reflect them rewarding the PC for his heroism, that's cool.

Do the second, and all you'll get is blank stares.

The first could and should be rewarded.
The second, never.

Why did I just read this entire thread...I feel like I wasted a portion of my life and I should have stopped...but I just couldn't.

Is this a thread about Lovecraft?

Cause this is turning into all sorts of manic-horror.

Yep. 45 characters is truly impressive. I am only up to 20 myself!

DM Frank, how many are above 2nd level or so?
