Horizon Walker Build (Lvl 16) - Some advises / ideas please?

Advice

Liberty's Edge

Hello there!

Im interested what one can possibly do with the Horizon Walker.
I like this prestige class and want to try it out.

Rules for this Char are the following:
- Character Level 16 with 10 Levels of Horizon Walker
- Half-Orc Race
- Point Buy 25

RP vise, I want to be a competent Guide, pseudo native in every terrain.
Still being good at fighting - being useless there won't help my party.

Im very interested in some synergies one can get with other classes, feats and so on. (Like Rogue's terrain mastery for example)

Looking forward to your advises and ideas - thanks in advance!
Naz

Most abusive build I have seen, includes the trait that gives you endurance for free.

All rogue, taking terrain mastery for every talent and extra rogue talent for every feat passed 1st. This is a massive one-trick pony, but outside it's exploitative advantages vs enemies from certain areas, it is still an effective skill monkey with 3d6 sneak attack bolstering combat.

this should provide the following breakdown in favored terrains
1- feat? something that doesn't require BAB+1... weapon finesse?
2- +2
3- +4/+2
4- +6/+4/+2
5- +8/+6/+4/+2
6- +10/+8/+6/+4/+2
This is before entering prestige class
Once in the class, presuming you continue to focus on main terrain
7- +14/+10/+8/+6/+4/+4/+2
8- +16/+10/+8/+6/+4/+4/+2/+2
9- +18/+12/+10/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2
10- +20/+12/+10/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2/+2
11- +24/+14/+12/+10/+8/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2
13- +28/+16/+14/+12/+10/+10/+8/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2
14- +30/+16/+14/+12/+10/+10/+8/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2/+2
15- +32/+18/+16/+14/+12/+12/+10/+10/+8/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2
16-+36/+20/+18/+16/+14/+14/+12/+12/+10/+10/+8/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4/+2(all others)

At character level 9, you pick up a +18 favored enemy bonus to creatures native to your 1st favored terrain, by 16 that is +36 vs 1st, +20 vs 2nd, and +18 vs 3rd.

underground, and mountain are good choices as they have a large breadth of native creatures. This one I'd talk to your GM 1st to see how he rules a creatures native terrain.

aside from the obscene to hit and damage bonuses your terrain mods still boost perception and initiative, meaning on your turf, you will go first.

The three mastered terrains can provide useful magical boons
Underground will extend your darkvision by 60ft
mountain provides DR/2
Swamp gives tremorsense
Astral plan give dimension door multiple times per day
If you are playing an AP that repeatedly fights evil outsiders, the aligned plane they are from is a great choice.

What MC Templat said. I will just add that you want to raise UMD, so taht you can use Intant Enemy wands to aplly your favored terrain bonuses to any enemy you confront. Expensive trick but great for BBEGs.

I will also note that with such a build you will probably become ultra annoying to your GM. But then again, the PrC does not shine in any other way that this nitche.

Half Orcs have an alt. racial trait that gives endurance for free too, so you can free one trait. They also have sacred tatto, which goes great with the fate's favored racial trait for boosting your saves.

My first feat would be probably Combat Reflexes, along with 14 Dex and a longspear you will generate many extra attacks.

The thug archetype is pretty useful, as you can forgo 1d6 sneak attack to make the enemy sickened.

Liberty's Edge

Okay thank you :D

I'm aware of that rogue talent stacking, but it's not, what I want - to be honest.
The first thing I thought about was, you can get some nice utility stuff while being full BAB (except one loss from rogue) - you "just" loose some class features.

My first build idea was the following:

Ranger 4 (Urban Ranger) / Rogue 2 / Horizon Walker 10

Getting Trapfinding and 6 Level bonus to that, while giving up Endurance, what I can get via Half-Orc.
The most interesting thing are the Terrain Dominances, of course. For that I want to grab the Fly (Plane of Air), the Dimension Door (Astral Plane) and the Tremorsense (Swamp).
Terrain Masteries will also provide some nice bonus (Perception, Fly etc.) with these choices and also Blind-Fight Bonus Feat.

With Endurance, Blind-Fight and Power Attack as Bonus Feats I go along with:
Critical Focus
Staggering Critical
Furious Focus
Improved Blind-Fight
Iron Will
Dimensional Agility
Dimensional Assault
Dimensional Dervish

Being Level 10 Horizon Walker and having the Rogue Talent I have every Terrain as Favored with at least a +4 Bonus. I wont get that Favored Enemy Bonus often, but that's okay.
With Dimensional Dervish I have a pounce-like ability, which can spread Staggered for example or just focus down an enemy and being safe afterwards. The Fly ability is also golden for a martial.
Impr. Blind-Fight and Tremorsense will also work perfectly together.
Wilding a Keen Falchion by the way!

What do you think of that?

Grand Lodge

Well, you could go straight Archaeologist Bard.

Grand Lodge

In fact, Half-Orc Archaeologist Bard is a nice fit.

Take the Shaman’s Apprentice alternate racial trait, to gain Endurance, and just use the Half-Orc's racial favored class to pump Archaeologist’s Luck.

Select the Terrain Mastery Rogue Talent at 4th level, then Extra Rogue Talent as every other feat.

I'm also doing a HW build, ranger 6/ horizon walker 10/rogue 2.

However, for the ranger I went with the battle scout archetype for its first 2 abilities. The animal companion is great, but giving your allies a bonus to their attack and damage, as well as some skill bonus is just too much goodness to pass up. Also, the "advantageous terrain" ability they get let's me make a 60' radius of terrain 'my land' to work off of.

Tremor sense is ok, but at higher levels, it'll make for less use versus fliers and other enemies. Fly and dim. Door abilities are great.

I'm going: ranger 6/ horizon walker 3/ rogue 2/ horizon walker 8/xxx2.

There is a trait to give trap finding like a rogue now, so if you choose 3 levels of rogue, you can change the rogue type to whatever else you like, such as thug, or even poisoner for poison greatness.

Boots of favored terrain are a just, as is the horn of the hunt master, now and then. Has a nice FE bump for allies.

for an interesting flavor character, that uses favored terrain but doesn't abuse them

A savage Barbarian at 1st level that follows up with Warden Ranger until qualifying for Horizon Walker, could be interesting for a player that wants to role-play the 'savage beginnings' of a character that develops into a more classical hero role. Layers terrain abilities on some more capable front-liner classes as well.

on a second note
and for the suggestion of "wand of instant enemy", since you don't get a favored enemy type that the spell requires, it probably wouldn't help.

Wand of instant enemy would work in conjunction with his normal favored enemy, typically a race with terrain ANY. Thus allowing to treat the new creature as his type which is covered from terrain dominance ability. There have been many discussions on this.
