Read magic count against 0-level spells

Rules Questions

I've been playing for a while but never had the opportunity to create a wizard.
My question is:
Does read magic count against 0-level spells you're allowed for the day?

Also just double checking:
I am conjuration specialist with an 18 Int (+4), that means I have 7 first level spells to choose at the start (known), correct?

I can cast 3 first level spells a days (1 per day, 1 for Int, and 1 for specializing), correct?

Yes read magic counts as one of your 0-level spells. However you do not need your spellbook to prepare it.

Yes 7 first level spells sounds correct.

Yep 3 per day but one of these must be prepared from your school like you said.

Thanks Hairy, I was hoping the zero level didn't, but "thems-da-breaks"

Thanks for the quick response!

Remember that the three zero level spells you prepare each day can be cast multiple times.

When I play wizard I like to make myself a little spreadsheet of my spell book. What ive got prepared etc. Just thought id mention because it makes it a lot simpler haha

Yeah I set one up - great minds and all...

I was just looking through the NPC Codex and the wizards in there have 3-4 zero level spells plus read magic. Any thoughts?

Remember that you don't need Read Magic up every time you want to use a scroll--if you read the scroll ahead of time with Read Magic, you can use it later without the spell.

There have been times that I have not prepared Read Magic on my wizard on a day where I know I'll be out adventuring, but rarely.

On my wizard, I tend to prepare Detect Magic all the time. Then I sometimes prep Ghost Sound, and sometimes Light, and if I know I'll be facing humanoids, I'll take Daze (which takes up 2 slots, due to being from a restricted school).

Any ideas why in the NPC codex the characters have say 4 zero level spells and a read magic? Thanks Yeti

EDIT: Sorry I must have been looking at Sorcerers

It takes a while, but once you've got Spellcraft up to the point where you're guaranteed to be able read any scroll with a Spellcraft check by taking 10, then I stop preparing it as one of my cantrips. But early on, it's pretty much a must-prepare, along with detect magic. There aren't many times I envy sorcerers and bards, but 6 cantrips is one.
