PFS - Ring of Spell Knowledge and Wands

Liberty's Edge

Good Morning/Evening/Afternoon (got it all covered)

I am asking a question that will be answered very quickly I believe,

If I have a Ring of Spell Knowledge and Copy the Bard's Arcane Spell list for Cure Light Wounds, as a Magus does that allow me to use Wands of Cure light Wounds.

The threwad that got me thinking was
http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2p5be?Ring-of-Spell-Knowledge-and-Scrolls-in-PF S

the Ring itself contains the following wording

Quote:

A ring of spell knowledge is only a storage space; the wearer must still encounter a written, active, or cast version of the spell and succeed at a DC 20 Spellcraft check to teach the spell to the ring. Thereafter, the arcane spellcaster may cast the spell as though she knew the spell and it appeared on her class’ spell list.

Arcane spells that do not appear on the wearer’s class list are treated as one level higher for all purposes (storage and casting).

So what I see is

Copy a level 1 Bard Spell - it is now a level 2 Magus Spell for me
As I can cast "the spell as though I knew the spell and it appeared on my spell list" I am sort of saying that I should be able to use a Cure light wounds wand.

soooo, do you say yay, neigh, or hmmm?

Magus is not a spontaneous caster.

Also, it says you can CAST the spell as if it were on your spell list, so it only acts as if it's on your list for the purposes of straight up spellcasting, which does not include spell trigger items.

np thanks for the clarification.

Through study, the wearer can gain the knowledge of a single spell in addition to those allotted by her class and level. A ring of spell knowledge I can hold 1st-level spells only, a ring of spell knowledge II 1st- or 2nd-level spells, a ring of spell knowledge III spells of 3rd level or lower, and a ring of spell knowledge IV up to 4th-level spells.

The problem is that it only mentions "arcane" spells being used. Not only does is it only useful for spontaneous arcane spell-casters, it specifically mentions that "Arcane spells that do not appear on the wearer’s class list are treated as one level higher for all purposes..." If divine spells were able to be used, how is the spell level of the spell affected?

I had actually thought of using this for my sorcerer to gain the ability to cast CLW, but reading over it I was stopped by the specificity of arcane spells in the wording.

Maybe I am over-thinking this, but it seems this item was created with bards in mind really, giving them access to more of the sorcerer/wizard spells. Or vice-versa for chatty sorcerers/wizards ;-)

To Gornil: I believe spells are arcane or divine based on the caster source. Hence a Bard casting CLW casts an arcane version. Which would allow a Sorcerer use that version in a ring of spell knowledge to cast it.

6000 gold seems like a steep price to pay in order to gain one spell from another spell list. You could just buy scrolls and UMD them with your high Charisma.

25 gold vs 6000 gold, you would have to use more than 240 scrolls before the ring becomes worth purchasing. Not to mention the fact that you would have to buy a scroll to learn from anyway.

If you take the cure light wounds from a witch instead, it's an arcane spell.

I do not believe there is a distinction between arcane and divine spells with respect to wands in PFS... "For the sake of simplicity, there is no difference between an arcane and divine scroll or wand. Thus a bard and cleric may both use the same scroll of cure moderate wounds." -page 24, PFS Guide 5.0-

A sorcerer with a +20 Use Magic Device, by herself, should be able to power the Ring Of Spell Knowledge with a Cure Light Wounds wand charge and a successful DC 20 Spellcraft check.

Actually, there's no difference between an arcane or divine wand period - wands don't have that type. You are quite correct that PFS eliminates the difference for scrolls. The spell still has to be on an arcane list to be used, and any determination of level would be based on that.
