Need Help with a name...

Alright, so, I'm currently working on a monster to use against my players on a later date. I'm thinking of some sort of crocodile/alligator type creature that has a breathe weapon (Toxic gas), some possible spell like abilities, a primordial look to it, is fast and has a bite/claw/tail swipe attack.

Primarily swamp based, etc. I have ideas for it, i just cant think of a name that I'm happy with.

This picture sparked my idea: http://archosaurmusings.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/kaprosuchus_final6_web. jpg

If anyone has any ideas on a name i would appreciate it. Or just suggestions on a process for coming up with a name. Writers block on a name *sigh* its ridiculous!

Thank you in advance, and happy gaming! :)

I would guess something like a 'mist lizard' or something like that... whenever I really get into the situation you're in, I would pull up a googlemap of an obscure country and look at the city or street names. That will usually get the wheels going. So, using that technique and looking at Azerbaijan, I get city names like "Hadrut," "Aghdash," and "Tark."

Hope that helps.

The "kuna" or "moo-kuna" is a water dragon of Hawaiian folklore that emitted pollutions (which could be interpreted as a toxic attack). Although reptiles aren't indigenous to Hawaii, Samoans brought stories of large monitor lizards found in the south Pacific when they emigrated to Hawaii in prehistoric times. Since it was supposed to be a lizard living in the water - it could be construed as an alligator/crocodile. The kuna was said to be a 'shapechanger' as well, so you might base a possible spell-like ability to change its appearance, perhaps appear as a humanoid female as a form of ambush.

Just something different, I haven't seen Hawaiian folklore make it into PF/D&D. It looks like a kuna might fit your name query - it seems to match your description.

I prefer to use actual folklore to come up with monster names if I can find a possible source.

SCP 682

That artwork is first rate, but the creature itself looks like an alligator on stilts. It might be a matter of perspective, but the picture suggests the back legs are longer than the forelegs which may mean it can walk or run upright. Velocigator?

Thyraxiel. :)

Just popped into my head.

Sizarg!

That's all I got.

I like your monster!

SCP 682 was good.

Like a Lab experiment that went "terribly terribly" wrong.

It's a straight Green Dragon...you could say Green Dragon or Swamp Dragon-kin.

If you boasted the gas or tail slap was not a dragon, any of the spell use or spell-like ability makes it a dragon even more.

If you had water breathing and Deathrolls it would be more Gator.

I'm reminded of the Manticore, if it mates with other creatures the results vary...this plus that equals Dire Lion.

I would go far away from the "See you later and After-while"...silliness.

"Dark Eater"

"Marsh Mouth"

"Dweller"

I also would go aberrant versus dino- terrible lizards and Jurassic descriptors are overplayed, or just played out.

Good Luck!!!

Sooo... A swamp dracodile?

The Hawaiian folklore, the google maps trick, and yes the Velocigator...epic, epic, and Super Epic!!!

I think "Velocigator" won.

If I was at the table and we see a cool pic ok, but just saying that name makes you want to try to run like in Pitch Black when the female miner "didn't" stay down.

The screeching the the echo-filled Swamp would scare me to my core. Swim-by attacks, "a gliding blindness" water displacement free action- like a jet ski wall of water, don't know the CR but toxic rot to "rust monster" a little bit maybe? The key would be Bluff-Wading in the water. Being still and buoyant, like bullying kids they poke a bit, then move on to better sport.

The raptor association would suggest a "hunting party of these things". Make them unable to do melee damage, they have so much fun that they spend 20 minutes downing creatures and are vegetarian..vegan..gluten-free whatever.

I would play them like swamp rough necks, they have no true role they just mess with you until you tap then they move on.

I do like the Hawaiian toxic pollution lore even better though.

Sissyl Rocked it!!!!

Drack-o-dile!!! is a winner!

Why not go with the actual name? Kaprosuchus or BoarCroc?

Or, why not go with "Apep's Herald" or "Son of Apep", to tie it in with an appropriate deity?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I like them all and ill be working hard on it. See you all in a little while.

I thought about using the actual name of the depicted creature, though anyone who knows about this particular primordial reptile might be a little suprised with any extra abilities.

Hmm well plenty of suggestions, just not sure... *Sigh* had to few, now i have a tone of good ones! lol. Well ill figure it out i suppose. Thanks again everyone.

@The Priest - I might just make it some sort of Dragon, or maybe an aberration just for kicks. I was going more for dragon to begin with, Probably Huge size, though i dont know if im going to give it any spell-like abilities.
