I am surprised actually, I'd expect UHT to be more popular in Poland than 48%... Isles with UHT boxes usually seem to bigger to me than refrigerators containing non-UHT milk.

Random Polish-language fact: UHT read according to Polish rules as Uh-Ha-Te sounds exactly as Uchate (which could be translated as "Eared", more or less).

I am surprised that no one used this as a milk brand name...

Wait... *google* Actually there is a milk brand of that name with a prominent picture of a cow, with focus on her ear.

DNA findings reveal surprising inhabitants of Roman Britain

Well, walked into a 16-hour shift instead of an 8-hour one. Good news is the second half will be mandated, so it's doubletime

Silver Crusade

I start full time tomorrow, which means working double what I had been to this point.

No way comparable to super monkey though.

Jam, jelly, and marmalade are three different types of preserves.

Pretty cool, but not as surprising as one might think-- the Romans at one point had trade routes reaching as far east as east-central China by land, and southern Vietnam by sea. Roman trade goods have been found throughout southern and southeastern Asia (n the modern sense of the name, rather than the Roman sense), and even as far away as Japan.

It's been long suspected that trade and travel flowed throughout and between the two great empires of the time (Imperial Rome and Han China), and this is just the first hard archaeological evidence (as opposed to historical evidence) of this kind of direct human-to-human contact.

Agreed, but it is amazing that Han traders could have traveled all the way to the edge of the Roman Empire. Although trade routes were there, it was still an arduous journey to say the least.

Apparently my name is the only name of actual Slavic origins within the top 10 male names given to boys in Poland as of 2014, with Slavic names being overshadowed with Polonized versions of names such as Jacob, Anthony, Phillip, Michael, Simon...

One shift almost done. One to go

Let's hope the next shift is quieter than this one was

I understand. When are you done?

Four more hours. I can't wait

These 16-hour shifts are brutal. Especially when I've done 32 hours of work in a 48-hour period

Plus dealing with a pugnacious alcoholic who looks like a cross between Everclear and an oompa-loompa.

Seriously kids. You got a problem with addiction you take care of that sh!t. The end game ain't pretty.

Now I have to consider changing my name to "End Game", so that for once it can be pretty.

Wow.

Thank you for reminding me that my job is not the worst I could be doing, or the longest hours. (Although every once in a while I might be in your weight class hours wise) ;P

OTOH,... I miss OT. :(

Have a relaxing Monday Monkey! I'm sure you earned it! :)

Well, the extra shift borked up my day off. OTOH, it was a mandated shift, so that's doubletime. I needed that with the deficit in running after my August of vacations. I should be fairly square after this next payday(s) in early October.

And I'm going for a drink with a friend. Yay!

Whistling at work is a quick way to end up with extra workload. I mean someone has to cover the sick girl's work... Give to the happy whistling person they won't mind.

Update: I am full of fried chicken.

I've had two beers (Full Sail Session Cream Ale, very good) and a shot of pineapple vodka.
I've had a shower, and I'm laying on clean sheets that smell dryer fresh.
I feel more relaxed and refreshed right now than I have at any other time in the last six months.

Back at work. How surprising

Well, it could be worse. I should have some time to relax tonight without worrying about things. And this job entails no interactions with end-stage addicts.

I wish you the best, Patrick. I am having a rough night. Lack of enough sleep makes it hard for me to get the energy to work. OTOH I have had much worse nights.

Sorry to hear that Sharoth. But, I do understand.

One thing that is good tonight is that I did get a decent amount of rest prior.

I had been meditating about my smartphone use lately. I watched this movie last night, which made some cogent points. I made a promise to myself that when I slept, I was going to recharge my cell phone in the other room. I got a much smoother sleep cycle. I think that's going to be a thing from now on.

Well, we picked up the sick kitty cat today and she is doing much better except for her red blood cell count which is much lower than it should be. The Vet is trying several things to bring it up and he cut us a deal on the bill. But even then it came out to $756 and we have still not gotten to having her bad teeth removed. Ug! Two sick cats in less than three months, an unexpected bill a few months ago equal to over $1200, a bad alternator in my car ($400+), and house repairs that have to be done soon. ~sighs~ No wonder I am a little stressed. OTOH it could be worse.

It always can be. I'm praying that my pups stay healthy as I am literally broke. Like no financial resources whatsoever. Which is very ironic, since I have been working so hard, but I've only had my 3rd job for a month, and part of that time was very part time. This next check in a week and a half should be very helpful. As should my hospital one. Sadly I don't think I will get any bus driving in this week, there is just no time for it.

I understand. I would be looking for a second job if I were not on the night shift. Unfortunately this shift wears me out too much. I admire you and your ability to work so much, Patrick.

I'm just lucky to have the light sleep genetics, lol

I got seven hours yesterday in two separate pieces and it felt like a sybaritic lounging in bed.

I have to say, I do like this job at WHOI. The night seems to go by very quickly. Plus Woods Hole is a lovely village to walk around, even at 3 am.

That and checking doors and turning lights off is a pretty mellow job. Definitely a lot less stressful than having an alcoholic promise to track you down and kill you.

Glad to hear that. Just beware of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Humans.

Until it becomes the setting for Stranger Things 2 and you have to deal with a demogorgon on the loose.

Was there a point to those questions? Is there something GMs are supposed to decode from the answers?

I lose more neighbors that way.....

It seems that I draw you into writing an entry, well, two entries, this month despite your tight work and training schedule.

I'll hold that as a small success. Not sure for whom, but still a success.

Or genetically engineered shark-people. Super-sapient psychic octopus. Deep ones coming to get their eggs back. Shoggoths on the roof.

Aranna wrote:

Those are helpful question for GMs and their players to discuss between themselves to help learn more about themselves and their play preferences.

A lot of groups play in a very specific way and later are surprised, often perplexed, and sometimes even get annoyed (and annoying) when exposed to different playstyles. It can be helped by learning that there are other ways of playing, and discussion about them is worthwhile to make the gaming better for everyone by finding common preferences within group, and occasionally learning that different playstyle you haven't encountered before fits you more than those you know of.

Taking Dogbreath in to the vet for Xrays today. He seemed at death's door Sunday, then improving Monday, and today seems pretty good. This constant up and down is very wearing on the nerves. I can't imagine he feels too good about it, either, but I hate to have him put down when he's still enjoying some good days.

Doggie details:
The vet suspects he has tumors on liver or spleen which occasionally bleed into his abdominal cavity. Between bleeds, he recovers to a point. Then after a bleed, he feels awful. This is classic for a big Lab-type old dog. I saw this on a TV show last week and that dog lasted a few weeks after surgery to remove the tumors. So I've been giving him bits of people food and doing things to make him happy figuring he doesn't have much time no matter what I do. But surgery? No way. I'm in that boat with Patrick and Sharoth - can't afford any financial disasters.
