Druid Bonus Spells

Rules Questions

So, I'm starting out a druid at level one and this is the first time I've played a prepared caster.

I'm doing the easy thing and putting most of my point buy into Wisdom.

I have a wisdom of 18 and am playing a druid at level 1.
It says you get all the bonus spells you are capable of casting. And to cast a spell you must have Wis of at least spell level+10.
So if I had the spells per day of it, I could concievably cast level 8 spells.

With the bonus spells per day, I get extras of 1 first, 1 second and 1 third.

Do I only get the extra first level spell because that's as far as my normal spells per day go or do I get a single second and third level spell a day?

If the former, it seems kind of lame (even at lvl 1) that a druid can cast a grand total of 2 useful spells a day.

No, it says you get the extra spells per day only if you can cast them.

Allowing a first level character to cast some second or third level spells per day is not the intent.

So it really only gets 2 spells a day(not counting orisons which are mostly just conveniences)?

Yep.

Still, you're a Druid, and get good hp and armor, and can usually go toe to toe with the fighter, barbarian, or whatever.

Just make sure your con and str are good.

If you choose a Domain over an Animal Companion you would get 3/day, the same as a Cleric or Wizard.

It depends on how much that pet is worth to you.

Or choose the animal domain and get an animal companion anyway.

...that's a thing?

Sczarni

Indeed.

Capable of casting has to do with the spells per day you get from level AND your stat.

I dunno if this is still the case, but it used to be some partial-caster classes had levels at which they got "0" spells of a level instead of "-", which meant they could cast a spell of that level if they had bonus spells, but they didn't get any unless they had bonus spells of that level.

That'd be the paladin, ranger, and any magus archetype that gains diminished spellcasting, bub.

Just remember that going this route you don't get your Animal Companion until 4th level, and then it only functions at your level MINUS 3, so to get a full animal companion, you'll need to blow a feat on Boon Companion (earliest at 5th level).

It's a good option if you're willing to spend a feat and delay getting your animal companion for a few levels in exchange for the Domain's 1st level power and bonus spells.

Note, you can do this with the Animal Domain, Feather Sub-Domain and Fur Sub-Domain. Your 1st level Domain power is different in each case, and the bonus spells change.

While not RAW, if your GM allows, you can also go with the Scalykind Domain (snake only) or the Saurian Sub-Domain (dino only) to get an animal companion.

Then there's the various Animal-type Domains available to Druids, but those just give you a familiar (if anything), not a full animal companion.

Feather domain is pretty awesome. +1/2 level to perception, +2 init in case you can act during surprise round, Fly and Mass Fly on the spell list, and an animal companion, though you have to wait a few levels to get it. The 1st level spell is kinda meh though, but at low levels it can come in handy I guess.

You only get bonus spells of the level you can cast through normal spells per day, so yes you only get 1 extra spell.

That animal companion more than makes up for any casting difficulties at first, or you can choose a domain to get another spell. Make sure you don't trash those physical stats completely, as Wild Shape will leverage them later as Beast Shape, Elemental Form, etc/whatever the spell names are.

Also keep in mind that as soon as you find that item of +2 Wisdom, or maybe even craft it yourself, your Wisdom modifier goes to +5, and you get a second level 1 bonus spell. It may not seem like much by the time you get it, but an extra Cure Light Wounds is always useful somewhere.

While we're at it, some 1st-level spells that are amazing for Druids are Liberating Command, Longstrider, Faerie Fire, and Feather Step (IMO). Swapping any of them out for a spontaneous Summon Nature's Ally I to pester your opponent with a Stirge is super useful, too.

(but now we're getting more into the Advice area, so I'll leave it at that)

I'm really not entirely-entirely sure about druid.
Would Summoner be better? The race is essentially a centaur.

Bonus Spells from a High Ability Score: Can I use these even if my spellcasting class level isn't high enough to give me access to those spell levels?

No. You only get the bonus spells if your class level grants you access to those spell levels. You can't even use them for lower-level spells. See page 16, Abilities and Spellcasters section: "In addition to having a high ability score, a spellcaster must be of a high enough class level to be able to cast spells of a given spell level. "

For example, a 1st-level wizard with 18 Intelligence has (according to table 1–3: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells) 1 bonus spell at spell levels 1, 2, and 3. However, he can only use the 1st-level bonus spell because as a 1st-level wizard he only has access to 1st-level spells (his class-based number of 2nd- and 3rd-level spells per day are "—", meaning "no access to spells of this level"). As soon as he becomes a 3rd-level wizard, he gains access to his 2nd-level spell slots and can use that bonus 2nd-level spell slot from his high Intelligence, and likewise for 3rd-level spells and bonus spells at wizard level 5.

Basically, ignore the columns for higher-level spells on table 1–3: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells until your class grants you access to those spell levels.

What's the character concept, Magic?

I'm debating between two pretty different versions of the same thing.
The main idea is a crazy guy who feeds enemies to his pet monster.

One is a Lapith(essentially a centaur) druid with a giant frog companion. Animal domain, so it takes until 4th to get it and the frog can't be Large until I can cast 5th level spells.

The other is of undecided race, but not a Lapith, Summoner with the Blacksnake (whip proffesional) archetype. He loses casting other than his summons and cantrips(I love cantrips. I'm weird like that) he specializes in disarm and the eidolon specializes in grapple, so it keeps people from being un-swallowed or cutting their way out. The eidolon can be large and have swallow whole at 6th level.

Magic, all I got to say is....Druids are the BEST! I love my druid. But you have to really work your druid to get the most out of him. Druids can wild shape into any animal they know. And let me tell you, that is awesome! Not just for the combat and fighting, which is nice, but all the roll playing you can do with that type of ability. For example, my party was trying to enter a city on a very magical plane, and they were making the whole party take a magical oath and touch some orb...and that was causing everyone to get a magical curse that would poison and kill them if they started any trouble or tried to steal anything inside the city. I didn't like where I saw that going, so I flew into action with my druid abilities. First I wild shaped into a small bird and flew over the city wall, then once inside the city, I landed near my party as they were being escorted into a small room. I quickly wild shaped into a common rat and scurried into the room with them. I'm not very stealthy, but I used the rats racial bonus towards stealth, (not sure if broke the rules by using the rats racial ability towards stealth or not, but it seemed logical since rats and small and quite, and can slink behind and under things....so it seemed right to me and my DM agreed) and waa-lah, I was in the city. I got to watch what happened to my fellowship, and didn't have to take the magical oath. I had a blast roll playing that whole sequence.

So the rollplaying, and then all the way cool animals, plants, and elementals you can wild shape into for fighting. You get sooo many options for combating enemies, and helping your group. And we have some of the cooler spells in the books.

Hell, wildshape into a Dire Tiger and tear into the enemies with your pet monster, and eat them together! :)

Darthslash

That does sound fun, but this is level one, so that kind if thing is pretty far off.

That kind of situation is also not the DM's style who is running the campaign.

Ooh, Skill focus, eldritch heritage, and boon companion gets me a full advancement froggy for summoner too... hmm...

I love my summoner!!!!

Eldritch Heritage to get an animal companion is sketchy, at best, and it would be at -1 character level(-3 Feat, -2 Sorcerer, +4 feat).

The reason it's sketchy us because the animal companion is also the bloodline arcana, which is something Eldritch Heritage does not give you.

If you want a feed stuff to your pet character, you could use the blood god disciple half orc summoner racial archetype, that's seriously its whole gig, and the eidolon gets more power for it

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Eldritch Heritage also just lets you select SORCEROR Bloodlines. Not Sorceror Bloodlines PLUS Sorceror Class Archetypes.
It does not make you a Sorceror.
The way for Sorcerors to get an Animal Companion via Class Features is "Sylvan" via the Wildblooded ARCHETYPE. Not any Sorceror Bloodline on it's own.
Wildblooded Sorcerors who want that still must select the Fey Sorceror Bloodline,
and their Archetype gives them the Sylvan "Mutant Bloodline" (note difference vs. "Sorceror Bloodline").
They still count as having the Fey Sorceror Bloodline, because they DO still have the Fey Sorceror Bloodline, even if some powers are different.
You could select Fey Sorceror Bloodline with Eldritch Heritage, but there is no way to get a Sorceror Archetype or the options it grants.

Magic - I'd recommend go Druid, with full animal companion. Yes, two spells at 1st level (and for the record 18 gives you a bonus 4th as well) seems low, but with the right selection 1st level druid spells are phenomenal - particularly entangle. You'll get more than you know what to do with shortly enough, I assure you. And this way you don't have to burn your very valuable and infrequent feats on Boon Companion.

Woah. Really? I can use the idea and get a bonus for it?! Awesome!

Going human with half-orc racial heritage(don't care much for half orcs).

Thank you!

I'm sorry to all the people who's advice I'm not going with, but thank you for your suggestions too. It makes me really happy that we have a community that is so nice and helpful. :)

God bless.

Glad I could help, but I should note that I screwed up, the eidolon doesn't get a bonus for being fed... YOU get one of its evolutions for feeding it

Ya. I saw that. I like that better anyways. :)
