Round 1 Exit Poll Results

Over the past few days, several voters have been kind enough to share their lists of favorite items with me.

I have used those lists to compile the following aggregate data:

Round 1 Exit Poll Results

Note that this data is purely anecdotal. Only the judges have an accurate list of the most popular items.

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 , Champion Voter Season 6, Champion Voter Season 7, Champion Voter Season 8, Champion Voter Season 9

I would say those results are not indicitive. Quite a few on the list I never voted for post cull.

Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

I think its a testament to how widely varied the voter's tastes are, and the fact that it is such a small sample size...

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16, 2012 Top 32 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9 aka Epic Meepo

Oh, definitely not indicative.

As noted, this is an anecdotal, non-representative sample. (Which also means it isn't a scientific poll.)

On the other hand, I am inclined to say the designer of the tactician's go-ke should probably be working on a Round 2 monster, just in case. Nothing at all is guaranteed, but it's best to play it safe and be prepared.

Very interesting list. It is amazing how one item I loved is not on that list, and several I thought were meh at best are on the list....

I did like several on the list.

It is very possible that the top 32 will have items that show up on only a few lists, but I like how this is showing us what items to look for.

Marathon Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 aka Clouds Without Water

Interesting results. Some of those items I voted against every time. A couple I voted for every time. Several that I can see voters going for, but that I'll be surprised to see the judges go for.

:-)

Edit- I don't think I ever saw Charlatan's Symbol. Pretty much everything else looks familiar.

I'm surprised that SKR and the RPGSS rules mongers are allowing this public thread. This is just the type of thing that might influence the judges. Maybe the judges didn't even like the item that was on eight different lists and now they are thinking that they made a mistake or that the public might cry foul if it doesn't get a spot. It may very well make the designer of that item feel that he got robbed if the judges don't advance him. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. It just feels like this data gathering should have stayed in PMs and not posted here.

Hate to say it, but I agree with this sentiment. This thread should probably be deleted. The point of keeping this in PMs was so that it wouldn't bias the judges; public voting is over, but the judges are still deciding. A judge could potentially read this thread (and click the link) and be that much more influenced by the public opinion rather than their own.

I don't think so. I didn't like a few of the items on the upper end of that list and still don't like them. The public voted with their clicks and the info here is extremely subjective. You don't know who saw what. I certainly liked some items more before I saw some of the other ones on my list and even some of the items on my list I have concerns about and would discuss with other judges (one looks similar to a 3.5 item the other looks similar to a previous year entry.)

My exit poll can't influence the judges; it contains no information the judges don't already have.

The several hundred anonymous votes I've compiled in the exit poll are already included in the 300,000 anonymous votes that were used to generate the judge's list of the Top 100 most popular items. Paizo's official list of voter favorites already takes into account every voting trend I have observed, plus hundreds of additional trends I know nothing about; my tiny public opinion poll is a small fraction of the public opinion poll Paizo is already using.

That being said, if Paizo agrees that my exit poll results are inappropriate, I will gladly take them down. I'm certainly not trying to influence the judges; I'm merely trying to let 80 or so contestants know that, even if they don't make the Top 32, their items were the favorites of a certain 1% segment of the voting population.

Sczarni Star Voter Season 7

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to let me know if they saw/liked my item, even if they saw major flaws with it... I guess I'm kind of asking for an early review, but in a sense I'm just trying to get a feel for if anyone (other then my BF) even liked my item and whether there's even a chance the judges are looking at it.

If someone PMs me, I will tell them the item name, and hope for some kind of response. I would appreciate anyone willing to do this for me.

Though it's very tempting to look at the exit poll, I enjoy the suspense and will wait for the official results on Tuesday. After knowing whether I advanced or not, I imagine I'll view the poll results out of curiosity.

I tend to agree with the notion that this is very premature at best, toeing the line of bad taste at worst.

Are we that much of a "Now" generation that we can't wait two more days to contain our anticipation?

I'm pretty sure a handful of items on that list will fall under "auto reject". Just wait another few hours.

Hmm, a couple of those items were ones that I voted for repeatedly but expected very few others were voting for.

I've added some more votes to the Exit Poll results.

Interesting piece of trivia: over half of all items appearing in the post-cull database also appear on at least one of the favorites lists I have seen so far.

In light of numerous board members' objections, the Exit Poll is now closed. Previously-shared information will no longer be available for viewing.

My apologies for any inconvenience, and my thanks to all who participated.

EDIT: I have flagged this thread so it can be deleted by the moderators.

You didn't have to pull the plug without judge decision. I wasn't trying to force you to close it on your own. I just thought it might have an influence on the judges. Do they have the info already? Well, they have all the data compiled. This small section of the data might not be an accurate representative of the whole and may influence their thoughts on certain items. We are not supposed to have any influence after public voting ends and I just thought that this had the potential to do that. You also have to think of the potential for a person or a group of friends to inflate the results of this document. I think these lists are fine to pass in PMs from those who have asked for them (myself included) but public posting in my opinion is skirting the lines of influencing the judges' decisions. But that said, you could have waited for the judge's decision before pulling it.

Can't win, can you? :P

Thanks for the list while it was up, Eric.

Given that during subsequent rounds there are also exit polls I really didn't see the harm. And I do suspect that Paizo selected judges who are not easily swayed by popular opinion.

And you robbed the judges of the opportunity to entice us with cloaked comments about the list of lists......

For what it's worth, there's very little chance it could influence the judges. They already have exact rankings, as you said. Give that those rankings come from a thousand votes each, they know what the community thinks of each item. It's a bit silly to imagine otherwise.

I wouldn't make any assumptions about any item on that list. As I mentioned above, there were a number of items on it I voted against every time. Who knows what the real rankings were?

Dedicated Voter Season 7

I believe the intent of the "don't talk about item club" rule is moreso discussions that could be seen to expand on or clarify their item, which could influence the judges' thoughts against the rules of the contest (ie, purely by anonymous entry). Additionally, any discussion on the item could be influenced by the writer of said entry, which is supposed to remain anonymous (even the judges likely have opinions on certain people in these forums).

A list of what people found were their favorites, without any additional discussion on said item, should be fine, I think? Stating /why/ the item is your favorite, or conversely, stating why you didn't like the item, gives the judges an outside opinion.

All said and done, I think it's alright.

Anyway, I now wonder if my item made anyone's list, so maybe a good idea to make the file available?

Designer, RPG Superstar Judge

1) The judges are already looking at items sorted to the top by 300,000 votes. A few more people listing which ones they liked isn't going to impact what the judges think of the item.

2) I trust the judges to evaluate the voter 1–100 items based on their own opinions and experiences.

3) And that's assuming any of the judges even looked at these volunteer exit polls, which I don't think they did. Their priorities were posting comments on 100 items while dodging periods of website outages, not checking the RPG Superstar General Discussion board for other threads about what items people liked. ;)

In other words: this is fine, and I don't think it would have an impact on what the judges say or vote for any items.

Since our hosts at Paizo have ruled that this exit poll is okay to post, I've reset the permissions on the Exit Poll Results file to "shared with anyone who has the link." The link in the OP should be functional, again.

It'll be interesting to see how the 25 lists of favorites compiled in this exit poll compare to the official Top 100. There are more than 100 items in the Exit Poll Results file, so even a few folks not appearing in the Top 100 will find their items listed as exit poll favorites.

And I imagine their are also plenty of favorites that my small sample of favorites lists didn't catch.

Gossiper's Gourd is the most interesting of the Top 32 to me, and it's even more interesting to see it wasn't on anyone's exit poll.

Historically the contest hasn't had a lot of room for "roleplaying" items, but it seems like the Gourd bubbled up in voting. It was well done, and it filled a certain roleplaying need.

I ended up voting for it more often than not, but I assumed it had no chance of making the Top 32. There were a few other "roleplaying" items I did the same thing with. I'm happy to see one of them get selected. To me that's as it should be. The game isn't all dungeons and combat, after all.

Ha, mine did too. Nice to see. Also made top 100, which is nice.

Better yet is that the top 100 contains many of my favorites, so maybe I'm not as out of tune with voters as I thought.

Your go-ke has its share of fans, that's for sure. :)

I know it was on my personal Top 32 list.

(Next year, I'd suggest designing an item whose mechanics are less involved. The fundamentals of go are a bit much to explain properly in 300 words or less, especially when the game pieces are player characters.)

Yeah, that's pretty much the lesson I'm taking from this year. Resonance was good, but down on the complexity of the item. (Which is hard, because I tend to design balanced complex things when I do stuff for other games.)

I loved the go-ke! I totally understood that it doesn't actually make you play a game of go, and that the target of the effect is playing a game (in the fiction) rather than navigating a maze.
