Fun and Blood! Learning a New Class

The Exchange

So, I'd never played a barbarian before, and I am a very casual gamer. The sort of gamer who is generally okay letting the other people at the table and the GM check my character sheet. Some people have to have the GM check their sheet because they try to cheat-with-math. Me? I wouldn't know HOW to cheat. I'm one step above the player who lets the GM make and level up their character for them. It's because I have a hard time with the rules. Individually I understand them, but once modifiers start getting stacked I tend to get confused. e.g. Did I already add that bonus? Do I add the bonus or modify the ability for that other bonus first? Oh wait, is this a 2-handed weapon? Am I using my off-hand to attack?...etc.

So I am happy to announce that I have finally, after 6 levels, figured out all my damage modifiers for my barbarian. I had to reread the rules about four or five times but I think I've finally got it.

This is a place to share your similar triumphs in learning the ropes of Pathfinder. Where's your learning curve? What parts of the game/a new class have you struggled to master? I know I can't be the only one!

Took me a while to get comfy with the Alchemist's Discoveries (after getting there, love the class).

And figuring out some of the more obscure (to me) Feat chains, and absorbing Feats out of the supplemental (non-Core) books has been challenging, but I've found there are things I absolutely love out there. With the Eldritch Heritage (Arcane Bloodline) Feat, even my Rogues can end up with an Imp familiar! Too awesome.

Liberty's Edge

Hmm. I had to learn the magus in full and that took me a bit. I had to re-read some of the rules frequently, but I finally got all the modifiers straight. I also finally got Spell Combat and Spellstrike correct.

I'll also say after about 5 levels one of my friends finally got the hang of playing a spell caster. She always played rogues before and I encouraged her to try something new. Since I was going to play I agreed to coach her on it when she asked. It took about 5 levels to get the hang of how casters work, but she now plays them in addition to her beloved rogues.

I'm always learning. I have my Monk on a spreadsheet on my Ipad just SO. There isn't a character sheet for a Four Winds Archtype Monk and every now and then I still find I am making mistakes. The AP is almost at the end and I will be starting up with a Magus.

I forgot that word that is used for a player who has been playing since the 80's.

Anyway, I have played a a couple of wizards but it has been a while. I am sure I will make my share of mistakes, but our group is good enough that we can keep our 'sheets' in front of us if we want. I know several players that are better than me. I can look to them for help.
