I do not believe it is possible. If it were, I would have made a lot less mistakes in my life and my posts on here would be of better quality.
I think you get wiser, but wisdom is a rough road. Lots of bumps. And occasionally, the bridge is out.
Then again, it might be conceited of me to use myself as an example in this... which wraps back around to reinforce that bit about my decision making and posting quality.

Being "smart" IMHO is not just about knowing lots of things, it's about making the connections between all the disparate things you know. Reading per se is not intrinsically better than, say, listening to podcasts / lectures or watching TV, it's a matter of what you watch and if you are able to use it to make connections to other things.
Lots of people just read or watch or listen to stuff that confirms their pre-existing prejudices, for example.
If you would like one simple specific recommendation, I would say start with an introductory philosophy or logic textbook. Learn about common cognitive errors, confirmation bias, etc. If you've already got that grounding, I'd branch out into psychology, history of science, or economics.

As a child, listen to music, go to an international school (aka learn different languages.
And then you have actually smart's evil brothers, trivia smart and condescending smart. The first knows a lot of useless facts, the other makes himslef seem smart by always putting down others.
Hey! I resemble that remark! Are you saying I'm evil?
Wait, don't answer that... there might be too much evidence to prove I am.

As has been stated, learn many different things, and you will start to see patterns. Exercise your mind, doing things you find difficult to do, and it will grow easier. Things like visualizing complex figures, solving complex puzzles, playing chess against adequate opponents, and the like. You can also probably add in listening to different forms of music. It is also a good thing to exercise your body, particularly in continuous longer sessions like running, swimming, and the like. There are those who say that meditation also helps, and I'd say it might.
The brain is a muscle like any other, in that you need to use it or lose it. Exercising your brain is the best known way to stave off dementia. How much smarter you can get through exercising it in normal situations, however, is unclear, though we know there is SOME effect.

I don't know what you want to do, but if you'd rather seem smarter to other people, what you need to do is try to casually mention every exotic place you've traveled to, every book you've read, and all the random trivia you've picked up into every day conversation, but don't talk too much, speaking too much means there's less weight in what you say.
Now put on some glasses, maybe grow a short beard, as it makes you look distinctive. Before you say anything, maybe pause for a bit, stroke your chin or fiddle with your glasses, which once again shows you are thinking hard and puts more weight into what you're saying.
Also, chess and classical music. Make sure everyone thinks you like these things.

I find intelligence to be linked to independent study and not caring much about what others think about that independent study. It could be anything - music, math(Pah!), throwing darts, whatever. There are a lot of things in this world, and a lot of ways intelligence can show itself. It's not just regulated to what happens in k-12, and) college, and post graduate.

I'd be more interested in learning things to improve my efforts into becoming more Kind, than more smart
If you want to be kind, then do kind things. Being a good person is done by repetition of good acts. Do it often enough, it becomes habit. That's what Aristotle said anyway.

Brain damage (in the literal sense) does still allow for improvement, but not always, only to a certain degree, and generally only if done within the first few years after the event. That is why large efforts are needed for stroke rehab.
Being kind is a different concept from being smart. So long as you have empathic ability, and are able to put yourself in others' position, you can always act more kindly. But I don't agree with Aristotle on this. Being kind comes from a willingness to understand others, and considering things such as forgiveness, tolerance and curiosity in relating to others. With that view, hurting others becomes about as sensible as hurting yourself.

Let's say I'm an average person and I want to get Smarter. How do I do it??
.
From "How to get things done" : simplify your life. Organize your living space and make lists of what has to be done and when. It allows you to focus on what's in front of you without being distracted. (Mind like water).
From "overcoming, ...(not saying as is embarassing)" Try to keep a schedule or daily routine. Especially eating and sleeping.Sharoth |
I do not think it is possible to increase your IQ. OTOH, the brain is like any "muscle" in your body. It gets stronger with practice. Reading helps. So do puzzles and other games like that. HOWEVER, I also believe there are different kind of smarts. Each part of your brain needs a different type of input to stimulate that part. Also, do not neglect the benifit of interaction with other people. Another thing that helps is to get outside and experience the world. Keep a dictionary and a thesaurus nearby. You can't learn something if you do not understand what the words mean.
~grins~ A lot of people think that I am very smart. I disagree. I am not stupid, but I have over 30 years of reading behind me. It is amazing how much that helps. I also like to learn, so that is also a good trait to have.

Sadly, not in my case. I have brain damage.
I also suffer from brain damage that I was born with. I though have a great memory...except for names(I think I inherited that from my father though). Though that might just mean we suffer brain damage in two different areas of the brain. You care to share what happen?
As to the OP's question: Read alot...or watch alot of educational shows(not everyone learn thru reading well after all). Also ewxpose yourself to opposing veiws and opinions and actualy think about them instead of categoricaly throwing them away.
