And yes it is a bit cumbersome.OK, Durations, a lot of items have said things like, "You have a pool of time length A, which must be spent in increments of B, which do not need to be spent consecutively" - that's a lot of words.
More cumbersome this way but its cheaper in terms of action economy.

All the same, I can just imagine one of the Top 4 adventure pitches starting off:
Hunt for the Bloodsoaked Torc of Sudden Death
Once upon a time, there lived a great wizard called Humperdink the Magnificent. One evening, when he was not busy playing games with his fellow wizards Dave and Gary, Humperdink set out to craft his most ultimately powerful magik item of Destiny (official): The Bloodsoaked Torc of Sudden Death.
Greatly prized by albino drow assassins, insane cultist of the Great Old Ones and housewives from every village in Golarion, the torc appeared to be an ordinary tarnished brass neck-piece, that gave a +10 competence bonus to gardening and cooking related skills. However, if the wearer should happen to die from a cooking or gardening related accident while wearing The Bloodsoaked Torc of Sudden Death, it's true power would be revealed, and the wearer would return as an undead creature capable of causing great damage effects with light energy spells once per day within the span of a full moon.
The Bloodsoaked Torc of Sudden Death vanished forever when Humperdink was eaten by the Tarrasque while wearing it, but rumor has it that even greater variants of the insidious item exists. So the heroes had better go and find it right quick, or nasty stuff will happen.
Hunt for the Bloodsoaked Torc of Sudden Death is a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game adventure for ZZth-level characters, who will advance to XXth level by the adventure's conclusion. Along the way, they must be prepared to endure horrendous acts of self mutilation, negotiate a major business deal (albeit with a +10 competence bonus), and pass through mist and shadow to finally emerge triumphant.

"The effect lasts for B, useable Y times per day."
Excellent advice (as usual) but, how would you state that the effect can be dismissed before the duration is over? Perhaps...
The effect lasts for 10 minutes, useable 6 times per day. With a free action the effect may be dismissed before the full 10 minutes have elapsed.
But now, has that really saved us anything? :)
Anthony Adam Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9 |
Just add ", or until dismissed" after B. However, it is usually taken as read that you can dismiss any ongoing effect you started on your turn, unless the effect says otherwise.

Some spells can be dismissed (standard action), others cannot:
(D) Dismissible
If the duration line ends with “(D),” you can dismiss the spell at will. You must be within range of the spell's effect and must speak words of dismissal, which are usually a modified form of the spell's verbal component. If the spell has no verbal component, you can dismiss the effect with a gesture. Dismissing a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
A spell that depends on concentration is dismissible by its very nature, and dismissing it does not take an action, since all you have to do to end the spell is to stop concentrating on your turn.
EDIT: This is for spells only, though, not for items.

Actually, you raise a good point here. Very few magic items describe the requirements for "dismissing" their effects. Some that come to mind...
Bottle of Shadows (standard action),
Boundary Chalk (swift action),
Cloak of Etherealness (no action specified),
Minor Stone Cloak (free action),
Seaform Shawl (no action specified),
Spectral Shroud (move action),
Stormlord's Helm (standard action).
As Samuel (and GM DarkLightHitomi) points out, some spells can be dismissed, but your players might argue that effects are not spells (my players would ;D). So perhaps only some effects can be dismissed?
Because this is an arguable situation, I still lean towards specifically saying that something is dismissable (but at what action cost?!?). If you can find a rule that covers this better though, I would be grateful to be pointed towards it.

I did not say you did... that's why I asked... I was seeking to ascertain the meaning of your use of visceral in the previous post, which can be used in different ways.
I meant it in the usual fashion, so it is possible that you properly interpreted my reaction to the terms, but I said no such thing.

CORD: A slender rope; a ribbed fabric, corduroy; a measurement for wood. More likely to be associated with a Wondrous Item.
CHORD: A set of musical notes played simultaneously. Probably refers to a musical item or something a bard would play.
Please know the difference and use them accordingly. Please.

I generally call for the execution of any radio announcer who says anything along the lines of "save up to 15% or more" in a commercial. If that 15% (or whatever number) is not an upper or lower limit, why mention it?

Dead Horse's Mouth of Gifting
Aura overwhelming evocative; CL 20th, 10 Mythic Tiers
Slot universal;PriceONE MILLION Dollars; Weight 2.5 kg
Description
Don't look! It's eeeeevvviiiiillllll.
This item appears to be a horse's jaw ripped from its broken, severely beaten corpse. Upon further inspection, its true nature is revealed, causing the utter destruction of any whom gaze upon it(no save). Upon this destruction, the gazer rises as a shadow, joining the legions of shadows created by other who dared looked at the Dead Horse's mouth. The shadow legion is drawn to the corpse of the horse, where they futiley attempt to beat upon it somemore. Worse, since their shadows and can only do strength damage, they do nothing to the corpse. The DM should bring this fate to light as he laughs at the helpless players who have been killed by this item.
I', sorry, but all spelling, construction, and other errors in this item were purely intentional, and meant as mockery of nothing specific.

Someone should do one of those word art things (I forget what they're called) where the size of each word corresponds to how many times that word appears.
I'll be working on that and other similar stuff, probably after next weekend.
