GM question. Xp for obstacles and puzzles.

Beginner Box

Hi!

I'm new to this. How do you figure out how much XP to give (or use from my encounter budget) for obstacles and puzzles?

In the GM Guide It says what dc skill check you need for insignificant, standard and significant obstacles. But I want to know how much xp you get for them.

Traps themselves are in the BB GM guide for challenge rating(page 38-39 in mine) As for puzzles and obstacles, I don't think there's a hard and fast rule. You've found one of the fun parts of being a GM, where you get to decide how much to award based on how difficult it was for your party to get through it.

Did they breeze through the puzzle you set before them? a lower xp value reward.

Did they spend upwards of 5 mins pondering it and discussing it around the table? Higher reward.

A lot of game mastering is making it up as you go along, there's never a wrong answer.

Thanks! Looking forward for my first game!

Once you get the hang of running, you'll realize that you don't need XP. XP, by itself, does nothing; it's simply a pacing mechanism. 'You should have X encounters before levelling up'. Instead of tracking XP, you can just level the group up based on significant story events, or every X sessions, or however else you wish to do it.

True, although I'd say it's useful for us newbies as a tool to guage frequency of leveling up. I get the x number of encounters, but learning what each encounter should comprise of (does 3 goblins count the same as 3 goblins, a goblin boss, and 2 dire rats).
