I'd use something like that in a steampunk campaign. =)

There's also the whole "face" slot going on. Why not right eye, left eye, septum, lower lip, upper-right bicuspid, and left earlobe slots? :p

I ascribe to the "magical interference" idea. I was thinking of making a system where the slots were based on the seven chakras.

Funny enough, I was thinking of making a system where the chakras were based on the various magic item slots.

I allow more than two magical rings in my games, though each added ring increases the chance of magical feedback/resonance which may have unwanted effects on the function of the rings worn.

Awesome stats Feros.

I suppose I have questions about how some of your categories were made.

What constitutes a knick-knack?

Why not lump the hand slot items together? Etc.

Cards and decks of cards separate?

I get it, you gotta put some order to it. I'll go back to GREAT list, no criticism here.

There really aren't that many of them that I've seen, but I'm going to address what I'm calling "crutch items." Those are the ones that can't function at full capacity unless used in conjunction with another magic item.

I'm not going to say an item of this type can't be Superstar, but I'd say it's unlikely. If the best stuff your item can do only functions with ownership of one (or in some cases, more than one) additional magic item, it's probably not Superstar. If your item only exists to alleviate what you see as burdensome penalties/drawbacks from another item, then it's definitely not Superstar.

For the previous years, all my items had one thing in common. That thing is that I was trying to show how clever I think I am - that I can mangle rules with balance maintained, that I am wacky clever inspired ideas man, etc.

This year, I look at my item and I realize that this year I have done something different. I left ego at the door and designed purely for having fun at the game table. I don't know if I have been successful or not, but there is a very obvious shift in paradigm in my item and its design.

It will now be very interesting for me to get to item feedback on my item as part of the superstar experience - I always reveal my item as it is the only way I can learn how to improve.

Have any of you fellow repeat designers noticed any subtle or not so subtle shifts in your thought and design processes this year?

I think that attitude will help your designs and increase your enjoyment at the same time. Kudos for your self realization.

I don't have much to offer yet regarding shifts in my process, since this submission is the first thing I've ever made that conforms to rigorous standards. I've played and GM'd for a few years now, but in a rather informal and off-the-cuff sort of way. I've been reading the CRB for the 1st time lately, and am just starting the spells chapter.

This contest has really wound me up though—I think I might burst with enthusiasm and creativity for all things Pathfinder and RPG. If one of the aims of this contest was to boost enthusiasm for the game, it worked on me.

My head is now swirling with items, creatures, scenarios, images and art to be executed, plus mechanics and rules, too. One small problem is that my creative impulses are bumping up against dedication to system mastery. For example, should I work on some art, dream up additional creatures, or buckle down and get through the CRB, APG, GMG and at least one Bestiary?

If I'm lucky enough to advance, I'll have to cram the monster creation process into my brain.

Knickknacks are small items that can fit in your hand: game pieces, carved figurines, mementos, small items with no practical use on their own, etc.. Anything that was a) small, b) not really an art object, and c) didn't fit in any other category.

I put that in to differentiate them form the really unique and strange, which I placed under other.

BTW: Thanks for the compliments, but I have already located some errors.

*Sigh*

The ratios should still be about right, but I will do a corrected version once I am no longer being distracted by voting.

So use this one as a guide to where things stand and the final version will be up on the 15th.

You should start already, since it will be really tough to catch up if you do advance. The deadline is like three days after the reveal of the top 32. Go through the rules, think up some new monster and cool abilities. You should at least have a rough draft you can adapt to the requirements and refine.

I had done nothing to prepare for the archetype round last year and I had never designed one, since I thought I wouldn't make it. It was quite the scramble. I managed to make one (Lonesome Rider) that 2 out of 3 judges didn't like but luckily the voters did. I'm sure it would have been more polished and consistent if I had started bouncing ideas around earlier.

Yes, I already have the monster concept in solid. What I need now are the rules for the second round. As soon as they are up, I'll be creating whether I'm selected or not. It's a good idea to have your base concept of what the monster does before they even give you the criteria.

Imma write up a small green swamp dweller that uses telekinesis and teaches PCs how to use telekinesis.

Thanks for the advice. You're right. I do have a handful of concepts I've been dreaming up, but polishing them and making them mechanically sound could take some time. Time to get reading...

Based on reading a few threads and pages from previous contests, it appears there'll be a twist. I wonder how restrictive that might be. Most of my concepts are limited to certain environments and CRs.

there is always a twist (so much so that if there was no twist that would be a twist in and of itself).

I know I have. I think in previous years I was just trying to find something so unique and different that was VERY specific in use, making it a niche item (and utterly useless to someone else that wasn't like my currently PC-flavor-of-the-month).

This year, I've been playing PFS and just made an item that helped with a somewhat frustrating thing as PFS player.
PFS has(hopefully) allowed me to make an item that isn't too powerful either (although if added to PFS, I'm sure it would still need an errata footnote :\, but still bounds better than my normal "so unique/specific that it's confusing.").
