I'm happy to work within the word counts given, but I confess I've never understood why it's the norm to ask for word count, instead of character count.
1500 words in the style of "The fat cat sat on the flat mat" is going to take up far less space, than if I were going for a Clark Ashton Smith pastiche, in which my nocturnal Terpsichorean heroine, with the eyes of chalcedony, wafts through forests of iridescent fungi, weaving arabesques among the cyclopean architecture of long-dead, damnable, antediluvian psychopomps.
{fails save vs Snorter's Purple Prose spell} AHHHHH!!!! {vanishes to another plane}
If this is just the purple/violet ray, I'd hate to run into the other colors.

It likely is a practice left over from a time when copy was produced on typewriters or other manual means. There was no computer to do the counting for you, so it was far easier to count--or actually, estimate--words rather than characters.
Also, when you get down to it, unless you are purposely trying to do the CAS thing throughout your work, the results are going to come out pretty close to the 750-per-page estimate for a standard size magazine.

Thanks.

Good luck everyone!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my submission, which is one of the 25 bestiary entries.
The creature would have been my RPGSS 2014 2nd round entry, had my wondrous item(s) advanced (Vinculum Vests).
Whether I make it in or not, I'm looking forward to the new pub. I'm relatively new to this site, Wayfinder and RPGSS, and I'm finding a lot to like. I recently reviewed and read Wayfinder #10 and found it very enjoyable. The Genie-in-a-bottle mini adventure was a highlight.
Thank you for those kind words.
I wrote that mini adventure using all of the encounter feedback from the previous years of RPG Superstar, so a lot of the credit should go to every contestant, judge and feedback author of those prior rounds.
It was my first attempt of writing up an encounter I had designed, so I was very surprised and delighted it was chosen for that issue.
So there you go, all you lurkers, you can do it (especially if I can :P). Take the plunge, even though you may have missed this deadline, there will be more issues to come.

Sigh.... I JUST noticed this. Too late now. Ah well, next time. I really need to stay more current on the boards.
If you are on Facebook or Google+, like us. We usually cross-post there. Well, FB,at least. I've tried G+, but it seems that very few people interact over there...

Great job. I haven't GM'd it yet, but I do expect to. I'll have to re-read it to see how the CR matches with the one campaign I'm currently running. The party is in a Katapesh-like area of a homebrewed world, so it feels right anyway. They're a group of 6 LVL 6 dwarves: BBN, BRD, CLR, MAG, PAL, RGR. This weekend, though, I'm a player in The Dragon's Demand—a LVL 4 GUN, Mysterious Stranger.
Oops—rambling off topic...

So, we ended up with 133 submissions....and our print issue is going to be 84 pages.
This translated into 42 submissions being selected for the print issue. Because we usually have a strong showing, we also decided to go ahead and continue our PDF Extras tradition. Therefore, an additional 14 submissions will be added to the PDF version.
My rough count is showing this means about 43 of you got in.
When will you find out? In due time. We have a LOT of assignments to hand out, in addition to our family needs and full-time jobs. Once we get things in order, we will be sending out an email to those with submissions that were selected notifying them. When we do that, we will let everyone know, both here as a posting, and on our Facebook page.
If you don't receive an email, it pretty much will mean you were NOT selected. Unfortunately, we don't have the time to email everyone letting them know if there are in or out.
So just give us a bit of time to get the editorial and art processes started, and then we will let folks know....

Quite a few of this years Superstar finalists and regulars now work together on the freelancing boards they started this year at Freelance Forge, so when you announce any future issues, feel free to PM me and I'll cross post there for you too.

Registered, but I'll have to ask something about the use conditions...
Plus, I'm waiting for the mail round! I'd love for all three of my things to get in, but I know it's unrealistic... So I'm hoping for the feat/prestige archetype one (even if it's too long) and maybe the monster. The feats/spells one is the weakest, in my opinion.

How do we become a member of Freelance Forge?
I believe its reasonably open to any freelance designer who wants to work with other freelance designers doing peer group reviews of superstar entries and work being done elsewhere, so there is an element of NDA in membership.
Register for the site and the administrators will like contact you to make sure you are happy to join etc. They run semi regular practice rounds of superstar too, so it's a quite lively place at times.
I have a feeling it might be open only to top 32 finalists of any year at the moment, but if you are serious into working towards freelancing, let it be known and you will most likely gain entry.
I can't be more definite as I'm not a moderator of the site, but I hope that's enough info for you to make that call to register or not. (If you scan through this years Superstar guildhall, starting here there are the initial posts leading to freelance forge being created.
I hope it helps. [/end thread derail]

I am also wondering if any of my three get in, I hope my item/organisation/seed combo gets picked (I know linked articles are a pain, but I am particularly proud of this submission). I'm not sure about my fiction, it was my first try at writing such and the song... well, I am always wary of printing reworked songs because of copyright issues, so I suspect that will be a no.
The main thing though is how much fun it is taking part, actually making the issue is a nice bonus, but the excitement of taking part for me is easily the big win.

Thanks Tim!
Yeah, right. What a non-suggestive little post. Doesn't get us excited or impatient at all. AT ALL.
*dumdidum*On a more serious note, I'm with Anthony on this one. Even though my big project was stopped after an email conversation with Tim, its "little brother" is still in. At the least I get to further practice my writing skills.

I'm working under the belief that parody or homage of the lyrics constitute 'fair use', especially since we aren't profiting from it, or passing off the tune as our own.
Dragon magazine ran an annual 'Bard on the Run' article every April, featuring twisted lyrics, and that was in a profit-making publication, so I'd say it's a non-issue.
Also, in two of the three songs I referenced, I kept the artist 'batting for the same side' as they do in their real-life career. If they were gamers, you can bet they'd be Bellflower agents, and loud about it. So they can't say the change misrepresents them or what they're about.
Of course, if I'm wrong about any of the above, then I'm up Shit Creek without a paddle.

Fair enough. I'll give it a try. Only work I have is the last Wayfinder open call, so hopefully that shall suffice :D

Acceptance emails have been sent!
Congrats to all of you that have been selected!
For you that have NOT received an email from Wayfinder or our editors, thank you for your submissions. The pool of selections was extensive, and our decisions were not easy. All the same, we appreciate everyone taking the time to sit down and come up with an idea, and committing it to words.
We look forward to everyone's submissions for #12, set for Osirion.

Have you been notified yet? Then I guess that only one of mine got in... Not my best favourite, but neither my least favourite.
Of the three critters I submitted, only one made the cut. Which is still darn good considering how tough the competition was for this issue.
(The critter that did get picked is also the most mechanically complicated. Hopefully, my editor won't be cursing my name by the time he/she is finished. {fingers crossed})
Congrats to everyone that got in, and a round of applause for everyone that submitted but didn't make it in this time. Don't feel bad though; there's only a finite amount of articles that can be squeezed into an issue, especially when it has a hard page cap like this PaizoCon issue. There just wasn't room for all the great articles.

Many thanks to the producers of Wayfinder and to the contributors, too. Congratulations to those who made it into Wayfinder #11.
I'm happy to say that my bestiary submission was accepted. Do you know what excites me the most about that? Seeing how a talented artist will depict my creature! It's also fun to think of my creature being used in play, challenging characters and wreaking havoc.
