Chelish Tiefling magus in WotR

Advice

Dark Archive

Hey fellow gamers! Got a few questions I'd like some opinions on 'bout a PC I'm running next year.

My character, a tiefling magus from Westcrown, Cheliax, is a lawful evil PC that came north to the Worldwound, having been thrown out by his human stepbrother.

1) What "good" reason would a LE PC be doing in the Worldwound? I understand that Cheliax and her Hellish allies hate the Abyss and its demons, but is that enough of a reason for my PC to go up that way? I have a planned reason he left in the first place, but I'd like some opinions.

2) How much is too much? I plan on his appearance to have red skin, yellow eyes, a tail, and feet with hoof-like toes, but would horns and sharp teeth be overkill? If not...

3) Why would he work with the rest of the party? The rest of them are not Chelish, and a lot of them are aligned on the chaotic axis. Any ideas on how to give a lawful (and evil ) PC a "good" reason to work with this party?

4) Would a champion mythic path work for a magus, or would the archmage be better? Magi are complicated like that...

I understand that most of this may seem elementary to a lot of gamers, but I am new to this and would appreciate feedback. Thanks!

1) I think you have the reason right from the start - I'm a Tiefling in Cheliax (2nd class citizen) I am headed to the worldwound, a place where anyone who takes arms against Demons is considered good, or at least a lesser threat to be handled after the main one is totally gone (yeah right that'll ever happen).

2) Depends on whether you wish to pass as human. Sounds like you don't.

3) If you are Pathfinders - Explore, Report, Cooperate. If not, hey we're all Crusaders right? Can't let the Demons get in.

4) No idea on this - haven't read the Mythic book yet.

I would think the champion would benefit you better, as you can focus on your damage output and still take the feat (or universalist path ability I can't remember) that let's you cast mythic spells. But in order for the magus to work properly with spell cpmbat and spellstrike, you got to be able to hit things.

Horns and teeth would definitely be to much. A Chelaxian tiefling would be even more likely than most to try and downplay their "tieflingness".

And as for reasons to be there....

Looking for a way to remove his Tiefling heritage and become completely human.

Looking for proof his half-brother is also a tiefling, but of Abyssal heritage.

Seeking family heirlooms carried and lost by Chelaxian crusaders.

Is that even possible? Removing that kind of taint?

Without resorting to some form of reincarnation? Not as far as I know.

But then, I said "looking", not finding.

I see, got it.

Just to throw this out there without trying to spoil anything; Wrath of the Righteous is designed for a party of good characters. You are hamstringing yourself by running this campaign as an evil character. There are plot points and story bonuses that you will very likely not benefit from by playing an evil character, and these are essential if you want to be able to successfully complete this AP.
Do with that what you will.

Champion as a base (more HP that way), and dual path into archmage as soon as you can spare a mythic feat. I suspect you are going to want Arcane Surge to bull through spell resistance or saves at some point, as well as letting you free up arcane points that would go to spell recall. Also, the Competent Caster tier one path ability should make most front line casters lives much easier, if only to save the player a bunch of annoying rolls. The magus in my group (not WotR, but a mythic demon invasion homebrew, so close) didn't find much in champion she liked until the tier 3 stuff opened up, so she used her first feat to dual path and get the basic archmage support.

That being said, playing a character that starts evil planning to have this be a path to eventually changing to a good alignment could be interesting, although not sure if that's the character you are looking to play.

Even in that case, it would be a good idea to be already on the path to redemption at the start of the campaign, fighting against your darker self. WHile there's some good RP there, this is a campaign that pretty much came out and said "Heroes should be heroes!". You starting losing out almost immediately by not playing a good guy, and it's all downhill from there.

Some campaigns (Jade Regent, Rise of the Runelords, Skulls and Shackles.... really, pretty much most other than this one) allow you some wiggle room with alignment... WotR really doesn't. This is the AP that was made for Paladins, and it rewards people who play like Lawful Good heroes and withholds those rewards from people who don't.

Understood, but my GM said that it would be OK, especially since she plans to have a redemptive element for my PC. I appreciate the honest opinions, though, so thank you.
