Now that the new (and original) Talented Classes products will be coming from Rogue Genius, I thought a new discussion thread was in order.

Woo-hoo!

come on talented gunslinger, i hope you're in the works.

Looking forward to the Ranger and the Magus.

Thanks for the new thread!

I have a revised Talented Monk coming out this week (everyone who bought the original will get the revision), and Talented Barbarian should be the first or second week of January.

Then Talented ranger.

Then it's currently up for a vote. :)

Very cool! Can't wait to see both the revision of the Monk and what you have in store for the Talented Barbarian.

Revised eh, well that should be interesting.

Curious, why/what is the revision in Talented Monk?

Obviously, it had too much awesome, so they had to scrape some off the top so the lid would fit back on.

First, it has some pretty extensive errata. None of it is game-changing, but there were way too many typos, cut-and-paste errors, and vague rule notes. pluvia33 even sent me a list of mistakes found. This version should be much cleaner.

Second, it has new art and a new layout and is presented as a Rogue Genius book, rather than a Super Genius book. I wondered how much effort it would take to re-do old pdfs, and the only way to find out was to do one. Since Talented Monk *did* have so much errata, it seemed a great test case. We'll do a few more so we know what the average time is, and then I'll decide if that's something I want my team spending time on, or not.

There were other reasons too, but those were already good enough so we went for it. :)

Just created an NFC for my Gestalt game using the Talented Monk. I'm allowing once removed talents in my game so decided to make the nps's monk side with a few fighter talents that really fit. Love how easy it is to customize my players characters and my npcs to get the desired effects.

The npc is a 12th level Divine Channeler from Kobold games and a 12th level monk using two weapon fighting with sawtooth sabres.

My players really want the Cleric, Magus, and Inquisitor after barbarian and ranger. The band would also be nice

I'll have to check out this Talented class stuff. I hear good things about it, and I need to get a character ready for Christina Stiles' Talented Adventurers of SpirosBlaak project.

Quick question, do any of the talented classes have Hero Lab support?

Now for a random off topic: Thanks to Damian Vryce Kil'Cannon for using an alias that reminded me that I need to re-read the Coldfire Trilogy, and get around to picking up the prequel novella about how Tarrant became the Hunter. They're some of my favourite fantasy novels.

None of the talented classes currently have Hero Lab support. We're working to rectify that, but it turns out to be fairly involved -- especially for the monk.

Just a note, Divine Channeler is from Rite Publishing, not Kobold Press.

Dark Archive

Yeah, I'm patiently waiting for Magus as well. :)

Oops sorry about the company error. Group is using Kobold for Spell less ranger and got the two confused.

Cold fire Trilogy was a favorite of mine. Wish to see it as a movie trilogy

Is the Talented Barbarian still on track for a January release?

Scarab Sages Contributor

Yes... but it's slipping to late January and if I don't have a really productive week *this* week it's going to slip to early February.

I'm looking forward to Talented Barbarian. While they are a pretty powerful martial class I feel like barbarians lack a lot of means to differentiate themselves from each other. Also waiting for Magus for the same reason.

One of the driving questions I had to ask myself was "Can I see a way to have effective barbarians who lack rage?"

The answer to myself was "Oh heck, I can see FIVE ways to do THAT," which surprised me. Which is one of the reasons this is taking so long -- waaaay more playtesting than anything bu the talented monk (and a little more than them, too).

There are some ideas that came to me I considered saving for the inevitable More barbarian Talents, but didn't. I like the idea of being able to do an adventuring party that is all or nearly all barbarians, especially since they are the only class named after an entire cultural description, rather than just a role.

Magus is going to be fun too, when I get to it.

Yeah, I always found that weird about Barbarians. Even weirder because in Pathfinder they kind of grow out of the basic description but go back under the berzerker umbrella.

I just hope that Talented Magus opens more reasonable ways to play magus that is not 'keen and fish for spellstrike crits'. I know that's not the only way to play a magus and SGG new magus arcana helps with this but it's the most obvious and intuitive route.

I've never really "gotten" post-3e barbarians. Up through AD&D 2e, going berserk was the ability of one barbarian kit, and berserkers were actually a human "monster" with HD 1+1. I mean, rage-filled berserkers are cool, but so are guys wearing zebra skins and wielding madus, rock-climbing Cimmerians, and marauding horse-archers.

I agree with both of you. I essentially assume that "berserker" is one archetype the barbarian had built into it. So for Talented barbarian, I strip back everything (even raging) to get a "core" barbarian, then re-layer everything as options you can add to that core if you wish to.

But barbarians without rage are absolutely an option in that book.

That's certainly the plan. :)

The same here. The 3e, Pathfinder, and 4e Barbarians have been an issue for me, because, prior to 3e, Barbarian != berserker. I have stated my dislike for the default the 3e barbarian (and later Pathfinder and 4e) on other boards for this very reason.

In 1e, the Barbarian was a non-spellcasting wilderness warrior from an "uncivilized" culture. Their home Terrain/culture provided them with additional abilities (equivalent to 3e skills and feats) and some cultural weapons in addition to their default knife, hand axe, and spear.

In 2e, as you point out, berserker was just was one of several "barbarian" fighter kits for the fighter (another being the wilderness warrior).

Another issue that I have with the post 3e Barbarian is tying berserker to "uncivilized" wilderness warrior. The berserk warrior from "civilized" society does exist in literature and mythology with examples that include both nobles and lower class members of society.

The saving grace for the 3e barbarian, in my opinion, was Unearthed Arcana. Unearthed Arcana introduced both the the Crafty Hunter and the Favored Terrain variants. The former substituted the Ranger's Weapon Style and Favored Enemy for the barbarian's rage ability. The latter allowed substitution of Favored Environment for Favored Enemy. With these two variants, you could recreate the wilderness warrior feel of the pre-3e barbarians (more so, if one uses the Weapon Group (cultural) variant also found in UA). A DM could create cultures with raging "barbarians", non-raging wilderness warrior "barbarian" warriors or pre-both. More options opened if the DM was willing to incorporate other ranger fighting styles from Dragon or third party supplements and use them to help distinguish warriors of different "barbarian" cultures.

That still left the "Urban" or "Civilized" Barbarian, but that was, for the most part, handled with swapping skills per customizing a character in the PHB or later urban/wilderness skills swaps from the Cityscape Web enhancement 1. An alternate ability for Uncanny Dodge was just a nice addition on top of that.

Any update to eta on talented series barbarian, ranger, oh my?

It's fully written, and in development. Then it goes to editing and layout.

I'd *guess* first full week of February, though we might surprise me and get it out sooner.

This is not a joke right? Really?

By the way, just a thumbs up for any of the Talented line. Freakin awesome!

I have just started a campaign of rogues, monks and fighters only, using the talented line. Very fun.

I am not joking. I *might* be wrong about the when.

Right now my household is dealing with the flu, and bronchitis, AND pneumonia. When I posted back on Thursday I thought we were just suffering colds. Since then, we've gone to an Urgent Care clinic. But we also walked out with antibiotics, steroid packs, codeine cough syrup, and an inhaler.

With luck that won't slow us down. We cancelled all weekend activities and resting, but it can be hard to predict.

And editing might take longer than I expect, especially since I wrote some of this in a fever-haze.

But yeah, the rough draft really is done. The cover art is done. I expect to have this soon...

I love hearing people like the line. Thanks!

(And feel free to write that in a review form, too... )

Apparently a LOT of people are enjoying using the books as the basis for campaigns, which I think is awesome. I doubt talented barbarian will slow down that trend, either. indeed, one of my playtesting groups is now running a campaign with only talented barbarian characters, and are thrilled they can take some many different roles. It's a campaign set in the home village of a specific barbarian tribe, but the group has a warrior, a true berserker, a shaman, and a sneak, all using talented barbarians. :)

As an update, Talented Barbarian just went off to editing, which REALLY increases my hopes of hitting that early Feb release.

Sounds great, the Barbarians are finally being treated as a people not a class.

You know with all the great 3PPs out there, Paizo will never need to make a 2.0, for it's easy enough to plug these products into the existing game and be off and running with a much improved RPG.

Cool, sorry for the sickness but I can understand that. Everyone in my family is being hit with the exact same sickness.

Which one is next, Owen? With the Ultimate Witch upcoming kickstarter, I'd like to be able to bribe you to do the witch. :)

Working with the fact that barbarian is in editing, ranger is definitely next, and parsing the votes from this thread and the earlier thread as best I can (and no longer taking fractional votes), as I see it people are currently saying the class they would like to see after ranger is:

Alchemist (4)
Bard (2)
Cleric (5)
Dark Mistress (3)
Dragonrider (2)
Godling
Gunslinger (5)
Inquisitor (5)
Magus (6)
Paladin (2)
Riven Mage (1)
Shadow Assassin (3)
Sorcerer (5)
Summoner (2)
Witch (3)
A massive book of NEW content for Rogue Genius base classes (talented or not)(3)

Now I have pretty well decided that, barring a lightning bolt of inspiration, the Genius classes are going to wait until after I have at least all the Core classes done, and possible until I have all the current Paizo base classes.

Also, I am not likely to tackle any of the Advanced Class Guide classes until some time after the ACG comes out this August. There's just no point in wresting with non-final versions of that material, given how much else I can work on.

Also, The Talented Bard is the first "talented" book I have trusted another writer to work on. Now that writer has a LOT of other things on his plate, so it's going to take time for a draft to come in, but the fact its it's being worked on by someone without eating into my time.

Now there is at LEAST a 1-point margin of error in my vote counting, and I have a bias in favor of getting the Core rulebook classes done first (because they are older, have more people kicking their tires and finding their flaws, AND because they are more accepted than any later classes). So right now, I'd say after Ranger we're likely looking at a tie between:

Cleric
Magus
Sorcerer

Now I'll count Christina's opinion twice (bringing witch up to an "effective" value of 4) because I know and trust her and her opinion, so it's actually [i]just[/i[ behind the current 3-way tie.

And, of course, if a massive wave of support for any class came along before I was done with ranger, that could skew the results.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Id like to see witch, for much the same reason as Christina, also would like to see how a full caster is handled.

I could get behind Witch though my preference remains for Sorcerer (but that's mostly my spont-cast bias showing ;D )

Yay!!! Owen is in for the Talented Witch. Here's the Strange Brew: The Ultimate Witch & Warlock Kickstarter, which he will be a stretch goal on.

Scarab Sages Contributor

Yep, the schedule is now:

Talented Barbarian (hopefully next week)
Talented Ranger likely sometime in late Feb or early March)
Talented Witch (mid April)

Soo.. anyone have strong options on what they want to see after we've done the cavalier, fighter, monk, rogue (all done), barbarian, ranger, and witch (now all scheduled)?

Just wanted to chime in- I just finished a talented monk levels 1-20 for Christina's Talented Adventurers of SpirosBlaak. It's the first of the Talented books I've picked up. For someone who likes customization and likes creating characters, it's just amazing. I'm definitely going to check out more.

I'd like to see the cleric. ^^

While I love spellcasters, aside from the Witch for the kickstarter I would like to see all the Martials done before any spellcasters - which based on what was released and what you have planned is pretty much done. I'd love to see the Gunslinger, but I know that isn't a popular choice.

After thatn I'd love to see Bard, Paladin and Magus.

I'd say save Wizard and Sorcerer for last. The prime arcane spellcasting classes have a lot of customizable abilities with spell choices. I think we get more use out of the talented version of classes with less built in variety.

Owen,
As mentioned in a previous post, I have two strong preference (it was three, but the Barbarian is, now, ready for release. My choices are

1. The Sorcerer for reasons mentioned in a particular post regarding Bloodline Transformations not being typical of fantasy sorcerers and, thus, should be an option rather than mandatory ability.

2. Also topping my list is a Genius Guide to Priests. As I mentioned in a previous post, the D&D cleric was, originally, based on militant religious orders like the Knights Templar, hence the armor, 3/4 BAB and d8 hit die. It is still held over in the divine classes. As a result, the robed priest with combat ability no better than the wizard typical in many cultures and fantasy is not supported. The only support it has really had was in 2e with specialty priests.
A supplement, whether Genius Guide to Priests or Talented Clerics, that brings back the AD&D 2e Specialty Priest as a spontaneous divine caster and aids the GM to tailor priests/clerics to deity beyond Domains and channel to include the armor proficiency, BAB, hit die, spell lists would be most welcome by me.

Owen K. C. Stephens wrote:

my preference is

1) Gunslinger and Alchemist. (they are tied for first)

2) Cleric

3) Wizard

Summoner, or I'll eat all your characters before their grandparents are born! ;)

Scarab Sages Contributor

So, we have released Cavalier, Fighter, Monk, and Rogue.
We've scheduled Barbarian, Ranger, and Witch

The current votes for Talented #8 are:

Alchemist (1)
Gunslinger (2)
Priests* (1)
Sorcerer (1)
Summoner (1)

*As a place for a spontaneous divine caster and aids the GM to tailor priests/clerics to deity beyond Domains and channel to include the armor proficiency, BAB, hit die, spell lists. This might end up being an option in the Talented Oracle, depending on what direction I take that.
