Item shops.

Product Discussion

Are there any products out there for 'Item shops'?

I always feel like getting access to any magic item you could afford is too unrealistic. My usual method is giving access to a crafter NPCs that will make what you want over time for money however it winds up making it seem like they should be adventuring since they're so high leveled and are able to make incredible magic gear.

I want to make limited shops but I don't want to actually make them because that takes a lot of writing and thinking.

On a related note are there any crafter/artificer NPC classes? something that can realistically craft good gear but would not survive in a dungeon and is too weak to be a PC class?

Hehe, Magical Marketplace just came out. Look for it under the Player Companion section. It is Golarion specific, but could easily be used in another setting or used as a template for other shops.

Whoah it's out now? I thought I'd have to wait for the end of December.

Actually my main problem with usual item shop third party products is that it's mostly new magic items not existing magic items organized into shops.

@Malwing:

Magic Treasure Shop-style supplements:

-4 Winds Fantasy Gaming's Luven Lightfinger
-Purple Duck Games' Celurian's Magical Miscellany
-Tricky Owlbear's Pug's Bazaar-series

come to mind. Especially the former by 4WFG is considered a milestone.

Raging Swan Press has a number of pdfs dealing with what's for sale in a given town: "So what's for sale, anyways?" -I wrote reviews for all of them, if you require further guidance.

Finally, a mundane crafter that is strong enough to go adventuring/make a good adversary would be Drop Dead Studios' The Artisan - apart from that one, most NPC-crafters are experts; see NPC-Codex, GM-guide etc.

Hope that helps!

Well, you could use the settlement rules to randomly generate items for a settlement. The results are for a settlement, but should be easy enough to take all the randomly generated weapons, make up a store that sells those plus mundane weapons, then take all the potions, put them in a potion shop, and so on.

I just happen to be the author of a magic item randomizer. Now you don't need to roll anything! It does settlements (standard or custom) and individual items (so you can stock up a potion store, for instance), and creature/treasure hoards are coming soon (within the next few days). And though the latter feature is primarily intended for finding treasure on adventures, the way it will work seems like a good match for equipping a store.

Edit: It doesn't help with the NPC aspect, of course, but those NPCs likely have a few things lying around already, right?

@Endzeitgeist&Stazamos; Oh my deity, Whats for sale, anyways and the magic item randomizer is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much.

Glad I could help. ^^ I've been using RSP's supplements for quite some time and they tend to make DMing so much more comfortable. Their other DM-helps also rank as extremely useful supplements in my book.

Glad to be of help. If you have any requests, feel free to let me know! If it fits into my vision for the product, I will certainly be happy to put it on my TODO list.
(Side note: I've noticed that the custom settlement generator sometimes produces "Null" in the list of results. That just means any item it could possibly generate is too cheap for the base value, and so I just need to print that fact out instead of "Null". On the to-fix list.)

You mean something like the Machinesmith? Hope this helps!

Is a Machinesmith really too weak to be a PC class? I have the book but I haven't gotten a chance to play with it or see it in action yet, but I thought it was at least decent enough.

No, it's not; I think Louis misread. Both Machinesmith and Artisan make viable PC-options, if not the most powerful ones.

That's tremendously decent of you old chum. I'm very glad you find Raging Swan's stuff so useful - that's their point after all; to make the GM's job easier!
