Help understanding Ninja vs Monk

Advice

I am just getting started with Jade Regent and I have a Ninja, Monk, Barbarian and Wizard in my group.

What are the drivers of a Ninja and a Monk.

I have read a little about the Ninja and understand they are usually committed to their family's or guilds. They are loyal and do their duty without question. They are also very secret.

How is this the same or different from a Monk?

Thanks,
John

They're just classes. How they function is largely up to their players. It's their characters after all. It's like if I were to look at a Rogue and say "well, clearly that character is just a thief, driven by a love for money and treasure" where in all likelihood that's not going to be the case.

Well, it is hard to say with monks, since people can play them in many different ways.

The closest I can guess would be that they are on a journey to hone themselves to physical and/or spiritual perfection.

Otherwise, it would mostly depend on the philosophies of their monastic order, if they have one. Remember, a lot of people learn martial arts wandering masters as well. That leaves a lot of room for more personal motivations (example: "My father was slaughtered by a six-fingered man, and I am looking for revenge. I was trained by a swordmaster, who had adopted me after I was orphaned, in order to attain my goal").

Overall, the only strict requirement is that they are lawful, due to the strenuous training of the mind and body that they must undergo in order to....well punch people as hard as someone wielding a sword (I mean, with certain style feats, they can attack with piercing or slashing damage, so it is not that bad a comparison. I'd imagine someone using tiger style could well cut someone's head off.)
