Exactly 300 Words?

RPG Superstar™ General Discussion

Liberty's Edge Star Voter Season 7

I just wanted to be totally, 100% clear on the 300-words-or-less description. Does the 300 words include only the description of what the item does, or does it also include the title and classification/price? For example, if this was my entry (it's not):

Robe, Monk's
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th

Slot body; Price 13,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

DESCRIPTION

When worn, this simple brown robe confers great ability in unarmed combat. If the wearer has levels in monk, her AC and unarmed damage is treated as a monk of five levels higher. If donned by a character with the Stunning Fist feat, the robe lets her make one additional stunning attack per day. If the character is not a monk, she gains the AC and unarmed damage of a 5th-Level monk (although she does not add her Wisdom bonus to her AC). This AC bonus functions just like the monk's AC bonus.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Wondrous Item, righteous might or transformation; Cost 6,500 gp

Would

Robe, Monk's
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th
Slot body; Price 13,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

Count toward the 300-word maximum or not? Also if I were to include Construction Requirements, would they count towards the maximum?

Yes to all questions. Everything you submit is part of the word count.

The entire submission, including the title, must not exceed 300 words. The submission form includes a Preview button to view what your submission will look like, and will give you a total word count for your submission.

The word count is next to the title of your item on the preview.

Yes, the bolded part and Construction and Requirements all count.

Bery very careful with 300 words. If your item has a mistake in it (say not including the name of the item in the body of the message or a missing space that makes two words one), it could easily be disqualified.

If you hit preview in the submission form, it will give you a word count, which will include the entire template.

If at all possible, try to give yourself at least a five word leeway, just to nip any corner cases at the bud. Also keep in mind that a lot of people aren't keen on wordy items. It's often the case that the shorter, the better.

Also, I am a hypocrite, because my items from the past two years were both exactly 300 words, if I recall correctly. :p

EDIT: also the case >>> often the case

Yep—if our word counter says anything higher than about 285, we'll be paying extra close attention to make sure you included all of the required elements, including listing the Craft Wondrous Item feat in the Construction Requirements, and checking spaces between words.

Average word count of the 2013 top 32 is 235.31. Nine of the Top 32 used 285 words or more; five of those nine authors advanced to at least the Top 16. The Top 4's items ranged from 211-271 words; Steven Helt's item had 267.

Longer items provide more rope to hang their authors with, and cutting words is generally a good idea, but a large wordcount is not going to kill you as long as you make every word count.

I found 3 items last year that clocked in at
  • 297 (final count 363 due to spaces, missing requirements, and spoiler tag)
  • 299 (final count 304 due to missing spaces and required formatting)
  • 300 (final count 303 after missing spaces)
I submitted them for breaking the rules. None were seen by me again (which is saying something).

Looking over the notes I made last year in preparation for this year's voting.

I love the stats! I don't know if they have any real value, but they're fun to read. Keep 'em coming Garrett.
