Tentatively optimistic.

Seems like there might be too much focus on the humans though, the old Godzilla movies IMO were best when they focused mainly on the monsters.

I've got some faith in Gareth Edwards. His film Monsters did spend nearly all of its runtime with its human characters, but I think he's got a genuine love for kaiju and the damage they cause. The fact that he's already said Godzilla won't be the only monster in this film is enough to give me all kinds of hope that this will be awesome. Edwards has also said he wants to incorporate the idea of Monster Island from the Showa era Godzilla films and, if a sequel gets made, he'd like to do a Destroy All Monsters-style royal rumble.

Okay, slightly more optimistic then =)

Too much focus on humans IMO...at least according to the trailer...

Well, it is only the first trailer. The Godzilla (1954) trailer is just as long and shows Godzilla in a few more scenes, but the majority of the trailer still focuses on the humans scrambling to kill the monster what with all the long dialogue scenes.

I'm guessing they just want to build up some tension, and we'll probably see more of Big G as months go by. This movie doesn't even come out until May.

Here's another good interview with Edwards about the new movie.

I particularly like this quote:

"We’ve taken it very seriously and the theme is man versus nature and Godzilla is certainly the nature side of it. You can’t win that fight. Nature’s always going to win and that’s what the subtext of our movie is about. He’s an anti-hero. I wouldn’t describe him as a good guy, but he’s not evil personified. He’s the punishment we deserve, you know?"

And if you make the movie largely about the monster, that subtext gets stepped on...

Well, sub does mean below, and Godzilla is known for stepping on things ...

I can't wait for this movie.

There was a French, I think, teaser trailer up for a little bit earlier this year that was cut to a recording of Oppenheimer's famous speech, followed by more or less the same reveal at the end of this teaser.

Between those two teasers, and Edwards' work on Monsters, I'm very hopeful. Definitely seems to be drawing on the 1954 original for its tone.

I was not expecting to feel this optimistic, I have to admit.

Now if they can get that classic theme going...

Was it me or did the trailer hint at other possible antagonists and/or a contagion?I wonder if we get baby godzillas again or other man sized horrors.

A sneak peek trailer shown at ComicCon earlier this year showed 40-60-foot tall spider/mantis-like creatures and a dead, multi-legged thing buried in rubble, and the action figure collection pre-order from Urban Collector mentions eight-legged creatures called Mutos. Having the smaller, insect monsters reminds me of Rodan where the humans thought the only threat were giant, earwig-like monsters called meganulon but then later discover Rodan and its eggs.

There's also this hint of things to come for the Godzilla purists:

Maybe it's being made to scale with our minis... :)

The quick plot synopsis I saw suggested Godzilla vs. science monsters run amok.

Cool. I love when Godzilla's bailin' our asses out of stuff we ourselves caused.

okay guys.

My phone updated yesterday and its been acting a bit weird. I wanted to post GOJIRA! just as you see here, but instead, thr auto correct turned it into HONORABLE!

I think the phone wants to see this movie as much as I do.

Oh god, please be awesome.

All of my yes!

Not that I'm complaining--far from it!--but I'm somewhat amazed there's no "it's going to be awful" prophecies of doom being bandied out yet...

Sovereign Court

It's a Godzilla movie. A colossal lizard will wreak havoc while puny humans scramble to safety. How can that be awful?

If that's the first half, and then in the second he turns around and whips some ass on humanity's behalf, intentionally or not, I'll be perfectly content.

I'll be curious to see how this gets analyzed, after release, vis-a-vis Pacific Rim...

It will still be better then the 90's Godzilla, in fact the only way it could be worse if they tried really hard to make it that way.

Matthew Broderick can explain it to you.

I found I could tolerate the Broderick movie better if I mentally called it Operation: Godzilla. The idea is that the army called the creature godzilla after the movie Godzilla monster. Not that it was Godzilla.

Only one good thing came out of that Emmerich/Devlin travesty, but it didn't happen until about six years later...

There can be only one.

Have to agree with you on that one, Velcro. To slightly play devil's advocate here though, if they had called it something else, it probably would have been more well received.

EDIT: Also the fact that one of the Executive Producers for the upcoming movie is from Toho is a big positive.

I didn't mind that one as a giant monster movie - but it failed as a Godzilla movie. No real connection to the original in look, tone or story.

Trailer 2 has arrived.

Dark Archive

1:38 shows a flying monster descending from the sky into the water.
Best Guess: Rodan (looks like Rodan or a Pterandon like-creature flying down from the clouds)

I know there will be multiple Kaiju in this, but the focus on the planes indicates that the flying one will be the prime enemy.

So yes, looks like Godzilla is working towards Jaelith's prediction - he will destroy all in the first part of the movie and then kick ass on our behalf in the second part of the movie.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I hope it's not Rodan. I prefer them allied, as in the Showa era. Rodan is too cool to die. (Any kaiju who does a 180 on a dime for a midair collision with King Ghidorah is bad-ass.)

An interview from Toy Fair 2014 seems to suggest the flying thing isn't Rodan but one of the Mutos. There may be other spoilers in the link.

"The "Winged MUTO Monster is described as having two legs and wings. Looks a bit like a moth. The head in particular was somewhere between a moth and a fly in appearance. The creature had claws like the classic Godzilla monster Gigan (meaning hooks)."

Man just three more months to go, I can't wait to see this movie. I hope it is awesome and makes a lot of money

No kaiju movie has ever been more than forty percent monsters, and that's unusually high. Right from 1954, they've all been concerned with human drama first.

No doubt you remember the monster fights better, but actually making a movie that was nothing but monster fight probably wouldn't work, and in any case has never happened.

IIRC, Toho had somewhere confirmed that the only monster they have rights to that appears in the flick is Godzilla.

My guess is if this does really well, We might see more Toho monsters in later films. For that matter, I could see them going an Avengers route, and introducing Rodan and such in there own movies, then have a Destroy all Monsters type Godzilla movie next.

I hope this movie is awesome, makes a lot of money, and spawns well done sequels.

That new trailer (well, most recent) has me hyped, or at least cautiously optimistic! I can see how Pacific Rim played a lot into the making of this one, and that has me even more excited. Also, there was no Godzilla movie during the '90s... REALLY! (One can pretend)

Godzilla 2000 came out in 1999. And it was pretty damn good.

While Godzilla 2000 was a fun film in my book, I'm talking about that scrapped idea from 1997 that WASN'T made into a movie. Nope, never made it to the big screen...

I'm going to see this with my girlfriend at a drive in theater in Ft Lauderdale. We are going to dress all fifties for the occasion :)

WHAT???? In addition to Godzilla 2000, on which Backfromthedeadguy is totally correct, the whole Heisei series came out 1991-95!?!

I still have one of these old Godzilla toys I got in 1985. I'm thinking of bringing it with me to the IMAX when I see this movie.

Spoiler Alert.

Bleeding Cool has seen 20 minutes of Godzilla and they say it looks awesome.

Could you just imagine Cranston Oscar-nominated—for Godzilla?

Or even better, G itself nominated for Best Picture?

Man, Godzilla getting an Oscar before Leonardo DiCaprio would be a travesty ;)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hmm. And here I was thinking that the travesty would be DiCaprio ever getting an Oscar.
