I've been trying and trying to find the words to express my shock and sorrow. I can't. By now the whole world knows what a tremendous impact Stan Lee made; what could I possibly add?

All I can think to say is a word of consolation that he lived long enough to see his characters become the phenomenon that they did.

Rest in peace, Stan. You inspired people the world over, telling them that heroes weren't people with powers, but rather people who succeeded and happened to have them. Few have had such a profound effect on so many. Keep Eternity company for a while and enjoy the rest you've so richly deserved for so long.

I just caught wind of this elsewhere; I was a bit surprised by how much of a literal gut-punch it felt like. Too bad. I particularly hate seeing people who deserved better go out on this current zeitgeist.

I'm not saddened by his passing at all. There's a quote of his floating around somewhere basically to paraphrase: He was saying that he'd never retire. Most people retire to relax or to do something that they always wanted to do. HE WAS ALREADY DOING THAT, so why would he retire?

I'd like to think that he was doing what he loved right up until the moment he passed.

That should be an inspiration for all of us. He lived a full life doing what he wanted and left a MASSIVE cultural imprint. He's left a piece of himself EVERYWHERE. Hell, if I'm able to pull off a fraction of what he did I'd call that a WIN.

I can't help but find myself saddened by knowing that Stan is gone. He was such a positive presence, someone so clearly happy to be out there doing what he loved - which was creating things that other people enjoyed - that I can't help but feel mournful that he's no longer here to keep doing that.

But the light from a star keeps shining even after the star goes out, and everything Stan gave us will never fade away.

Stan Lee was an imperfect human, but he also spent many years lionising his collaborators. Stan Lee might have been a salesman and huckster as much as he was a writer but he is still the co-creator of heroes that shaped childhoods the world over.

I agree with Dude. Stan might not have been perfect, but it's because of his work we have the Marvel Comics we have now. Did Jack Kirby help? Of course. So did Dikto. But you need more than just one guy doing one thing to help with starting something. We all treasure Gary Gygax, but no one is saying that Dave Arneson shouldn't get his due either. Same with Stan.
