Battle Cleric for Dragons Demand Super Adventure. Help?

Advice

I'm getting in to a new group and am interested in playing a Battle Cleric.
Details are:
20 point buy.
Core rules only.
I'll be main healer.
Four players.
Game goes from 1st - 7th level.

I'm considering either Dwarf or Half-Orc, and would like to wield either a two handed hammer or axe. Heavy armor would be preferred.

My worry is that if I lean to heavily on the thematics of my build, I'll end up being lousy at melee AND healing.

Any advice?

Well, a fighter dip might be nice for the bonus feats and proficiencies.

Now, I'm not sure what deity/demigod/whatever grants both the plant (for the growth sub domain) and the healing domain, but I'm sure there is one. That enlarge person a bunch of times per day is invaluable.

Also, consider using a reach weapon rather than a two handed hammer or axe. It'll keep you from taking as much damage and, with combat reflexes and the growth sub domain, you can focus your damage through AoOs. This leaves your turns for buffs/channels/heals.

Lastly, look at the holy vindicator PrC. Gives BAB and spellcasting.

Thanks much!

I don't think I'll ever get the chance to play the PrC much since we only play till 7th, and that will be the level I am able to take it. Otherwise, that's an interesting set of options. I'm a little curious about how to balance combat feats, (Like Martial Weapons) and healing feats though.

Sorry, I realized that the PrC was a dumb suggestion due to level a little after I posted.

Depending on deity, perhaps (I'm not sure of all the favored weapons) you can get a reach weapon as a profiency, but you'll still need to burn a feat on heavy armor proficiency.

That feat balancing is exactly why I suggested a fighter dip. I can't really help with exact feats until you've decided between reach weapons or two handers, but the dip will get you a couple of necessary combat feats.

Half-Orc Cleric of Gorum 5 / Wild Rager Barbarian 2

Alt. Racial Traits: Sacred Tattoo, Shaman's Apprentice

STR 18
DEX 12
CON 16
INT 10
WIS 12 (+1 at 4th lvl)
CHA 7

Traits: Fate's Favored, Reactionary (or Mindlessly Cruel if it is allowed, or Second Chance in case you are afraid of losing the willsave when you kill someone under wild rage)

Domains: Ferocity subdomain (associated with Strenght), Destruction

1 Barbarian Endurance (bonus), Power Attack
2 Cleric
3 Barbarian Raging Vitality, PR: Reckless Abandon
4 Cleric
5 Cleric Improved Initiative
6 Cleric
7 Cleric Toughness

You will have greataxe proficiency as a half-orc. No heavy armor proficiency, but wild rage more than makes up for it.

Wild rage is very interesting. It works as normal rage, but when you kill someone you must throw a willsave or get confused. Now what you should do is voluntarily fail the saving throw. As per the spell confusion you will attack the nearest enemy, but the rage bonuses will continue to function without expending rage rounds. Continue attacking and killing the enemies like this. When you kill the last enemy, make your save (which is going to be trivial).

I put the first lcl of cleric at lvl 2 so that you can start healing with a cure light wounds wand by second lvl, if you don't mind waiting until 3rd lvl taking the 2nd lvl of barbarian at 2nd lvl will make you more awesome faster.

Do not forget that wild rage gives you one more attack at full-attack actions at your highest BAB. By stacking rage, your buffs (fate's favored doubles the bonuses of divine favor!), your first lvl domain abilities and power attack, you will unleash divine fury on your enemies!

confusion only let's you attack people that hit you, otherwise roll on the table.

When you say core rules only do you mean core rulebook only or just the core line?

This is true. Still, enemies usually hit you anyway when you pound on them with tons of damage, and it is easy to have your allies know not to stand closer to you than any enemy.

It is an excellent way to have a lenghty rage from lvl 1 and the bonus attack will essentialy double his damage on full attacks.

Core rule book only.
