HEAVY METAL BUILD

Advice

I need helping building a caster character with an affinity for all things metal. Now their seem to be two obvious paths but I'm not sure which route to take. Their is Oracle with the Metal mystery, or their is Wizard with the Metal Elemental school. I don't know jack sh** about either so if someone could fill me in on both of them that would be great. I want this character to have an almost telekinetic feel, with metal of course. Imagine him walking with blades floating around him deflecting arrows and making attacks on enemies while he is picking people up wearing metal armor crushing them in it and then throwing them off to the side. Please help me solidify this concept!

The wizard has the obvious advantage of being a wizard. But the Metal school seems dull.

The Metal Oracle, on the other hand: Take Steel Scarf at level 1 for melee attacks with 30' range. Spell-wise, there are a handful of appropriate spells: Returning Weapon, Spiritual Weapon, Pilfering Hand, Chains of Perdition.

The Oracle of Metal.
Just read through the Metal Revelations
Its awesome!

I always wanted to play a smith who is so obsessed with metal he looked into the fore for too long and thus has the clouded vision curse.

Played for a session of Serpent's Skull and our oracle was a half-orc oracle of metal. Worshipped Gorum, had the alternate racial trait chain fighter and used flails, although later on was going to pick up axes because it's all about the metal. Her idea was to reskin spells that didn't say how they looked to look metal like, blade barrier later on, the works. Traits grip of iron makes it harder to disarm you but then again so does a locked gauntlet. Scary part was she was the disable device monkey.

And here I was thinking you wanted to stat out Rob Halford.

That'd be leather, not metal ;)

I wonder if Tattooed Sorcerer could be worked into this build...

Liberty's Edge

I dare anybody to use Tetsuo: the Iron Man as inspiration... ;)

Oh too bad, you actually meant metal.

I was going to suggest a tattooed Sound Striker Bard who kills their enemies through screaming at them.

Everyone seems to be leaning toward the oracle, why is that exactly? The oracle never gets access to a lot if not all of the spells that the metal elementalist school provides. Also I want him to be more of a caster than a melee fighter. A lot of the metal oracle abilities seems to be made for melee builds. I'm open to either oracle or wizard I just need someone to convince me which one is better. Also I would like to point out the metal sub domain, if that gives any ideas. Which class would be the most optimal choice? If oracle is the way too go I wont hesitate, I just needs someone to sell it.

Edit: I just realized the haunted curse would really fit with the telekinetic feel I want for this character, I would just reflavor it. Also the lame curse would be good because dance of blades basically cancels the effect.

Looking at it, I think that the preference for the metal oracle is from the fact that, even if it is made into more of a caster type, it can be far more durable than the wizard. Oracles start off with medium armor proficiency, and they do not have to deal with arcane spell failure due to armor. They can also gain proficiency in heavy armor without spending a feat and they can increase their speed with dance of blades so they are just as fast as anyone else (plus the 20% miss chance later on at the cost of a move action, which can be fairly good action economy since it does not interfere with the standard action of most spells and swift action of quickened spells). With the boost to fortitude by another revelation, they can fairly much tank without spreading their stats out too much.

How come the \m/SLAYER!\m/ hasn't been mentioned as a class choice in this thread??!

If you want to go into melee, I'd go with oracle. However, the magneto-esque feeling you were describing is DEFINITELY wizards. All of the telekinetic type stuff is on the wizard spell list. I mean, check this spell out: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/w/wreath-of-blades

Actually, a Magus might be a good thing to look at too. They get some fancy telekinetic stuff of their own.

I'm definitely going for that magneto feel. Have you played an elementalist wizard before? As far as magus, could you explain a little more? Also in your opinion what path would be the most optimal? because my group of friends that I'll be playing with are all min/maxing mad houses.

Edit: I'm down for a melee or caster based build, I just want it to be as solid as possible. Or if I could somehow do a ranged build and hurl weapons at people and have them return. I really don't care how its done as long as its effective.

Okay, so let's look at the arcane casters. I played a Conjuration wizard from 9th level up to 16th - Metal elemental school is going to be a bit weaker but still pretty good. Also, you can take the Opposition School feat eventually to have no forbidden schools.

Both Wizard and Magus are going to be pretty powerful. Which one is better depends on whether your party needs a full caster or a front-line fighter more - for example, if you have a sorcerer in the party, the Magus is probably the right choice. The Magus has a more limited spell list than the wizard and lower save DCs, but being able to do TWF and tack on touch spells for free is pretty darn amazing. Don't worry too much about optimizing besides jacking Int up as high as it can go (or Str, for a magus) - learning to use your spells and abilities to their utmost will likely be all the optimizing you'll need.

As for spells, they both get the iconic Magneto spells, Fly and Telekinesis, at levels 3 and 5 respectively. However, Wizards get those spells earlier and can cast them more often. (Of course, once you get the cash, you can get a Ring of Telekinesis.) Wizards also get many other telekinetic and metal-affecting spells. Telekinetic Charge and Enemy Hammer are two of my favorites - Paladins make excellent projectiles.

For hurling: you can put the Returning weapon quality on most weapons. Playing a Magus with a returning, spell-storing dagger or throwing axe could be quite fun. There's also the Universalist wizard school ability, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are several feats to enhance thrown weapons - Hurling Charge, for example.

Good luck! Prepared arcane casters represent!
