Nature Shaman / Monk Stacking

Advanced Class Guide Playtest General Discussion

The Exchange

I know there's tons of "can you double stack bonuses" threads out there, usually in the form of Fury's Fall + Agile Maneuvers or something related. That being said, my friends and I were discussing what would be the results of someone taking 1 level of Nature Shaman (with the Wis based Nature's Whispers) and then going Monk. Would you get double your Wis modifier on your AC? If so, why? If not, why not? We could not come to any definite conclusions and had great evidence to support both sides.

I think the answer would be "However the Fury's Fall + Agile Maneuvers thing works."

Personally, I would see them both as doubling up. The equation for a Monk's AC is Dex + Wis, or A+B. You have an ability that lets you substitute B for A. So, you would get (B)+B, Wis + Wis.

However, I also haven't kept up with the discussions (or dev responses, if any) about this. So I might be missing a rule, reading, or statement that makes me totally wrong.

There's a thread about this general thing in the rules forum.

Also even if it does work, I don't think it is unbalancing because you can't wear armor.

You can A + B = AC

or you can get B + B = AC

I'm willing to bet the numbers will be about the same.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, being able to stack Wisdom and Wisdom to AC isn't a big deal... if it were Dexterity and Dexterity, that would be a problem, since Dexterity is an offensive stat. But the only thing you can really do with Wisdom and Wisdom is be a really defensive caster. Which is nice, but you're losing a level of casting for it, and casters have plenty of options for defensiveness anyway.

different bonus types, so id say they stack

agile.maneuvers/furys falm both replace str with dex, and dont stack because of it.

with monk ac and natures whispers, one is replacing dex with wis, while the other is giving you an untyped bonus equal to your wis (and a scaling level bonus).

its in a similar boat with paladins' divine grace and the bestow grace spell, or smite and osyluths guile and sidestep secret via dip.

personally im all for it, since this goes a good way towards making the monk less MAD (now things that arent zen archers dont need a stellar dex with everything else!), and its helpful to other wis-centric classes as well, such as the inquisitor.

False.

Agile maneuvers replaces Str with Dex.
Fury's Fall adds Dex when you trip.

One adds. The other substitues for str.

It is pretty much identical to this situation.

Monk Adds Wis. Nature Shaman substitues Dex with Wis.

my mistake then.

if you are a zen archer it becomes an offensive stat

as with clerics and guided hand. i'm still reluctant to shut down anything that reduces the non-zen-archer monk's MADness.
