On days that Pazio is doing roll outs for things like the new Advanced Class guide play tests that are going to have a large number of hits on the site that are libel to crash the site. Pazio should rent short term space from Rack space or a company like it to temporaily host 6 or so servers to handle the increased traffic so your site does not crash and your store is not off line so you won't loose money from lost sales.
Another option would be to separate forums and downloads from the checkout system (in terms of hardware and bandwidth - not in terms of the way we users see it) to ensure the store is always guaranteed enough resources to be working fine even if the rest gets overloaded.

Considering that they would probably pay more for temporary servers (to give out free product) then they would make in "lost sales" , I see this as a horrible business idea. People just need to be patient. Paizo is already generous enough with their free products (playtests and the PRD), so what if the increased traffic slows/shuts down the site for a couple hours.

When you run a company who has online sales, it is never a bad business idea to ensure that site is up.

I might also suggest that you not wait until 2PM West Coast time to open up the downloading since this means everyone in the country tries to download at the same time.
Why not open up the downloading closer to 9 or 10 AM East Coast time? That way, most folks on the East Coast will already be done downloading as folks in the next time zone wake up and start their downloads. In turn, by the time the West Coast folks wake up and sart downloading, most of the earlier times zones will be done.
I think staggering the otherwise crushing bandwidth load across the time zones like this would offer fairly significant easing of server load. Yes, someone at Paizo would need to come in early to "throw the switch" but it seems like it would be worth it ...

Because that's 6 or 7 am Washington time, and we like to have a real, live, awake member of the design team at the office when the playtest starts just in case there are last-minute corrections or problems. :)
