Benefit: Your animal companion, familiar, or mount gains the celestial template and becomes a magical beast, though you may still treat it as an animal when using Handle Animal, wild empathy, or any other spells or class abilities that specifically affect animals.

Celestial template

Senses The creature gains darkvision 60 ft.

Defensive Abilities The creature gains damage reduction and energy resistance as noted on Table: Celestial Creature Defense.

SR The creature gains spell resistance equal to its new CR +5

Special Attacks The creature may smite evil 1/day as a swift action (it adds its Cha bonus to attack rolls, and a damage bonus equal to its HD against evil foes; smite persists until the target is dead or the celestial creature rests).

Does the critter get SR at all? What, if anything, is its challenge rating?

please note: there's 100 other threads for BAB etc getting changed by this feat. I'm just asking about the SR.

Dark Archive

Haha, the BAB thing actually got answered in the FAQ on Friday. This thread was going to be part two of my bid to get this feat clarified, but you beat me to the punch by 4 minutes. Anyway, I clicked FAQ.

I know this has been asked before, and the only answer I got was in James Jacob's "Ask Anything" thread, where he said to use your effective druid level as the CR. I've got that exchange printed out and paperclipped to my Nature Oracle's mount's character sheet.

Thanks. So that means the Lunar Oracle Aasimar with the FCB in her animal companion with Celestial Servant gets SR 23 at 12th Level since your effective druid level is 18th.

The druid level fix certainly makes sense, but I'd really like my PFS character not to have to deal with table variance issues.

I'd still be careful with that, some of the paizo crew have stated they'd run things a certain way in the past, which led to some people taking it as "official" answers which might have been contradictory to other rules/faqs. It then blew up and it was said that unless it was errata'd/faq'd/actually stated to be official, these were just individual opinions on how they'd run it. It's probably a large chunk of the reason we have the faq system in place now.

I feel like this is asked often enough it's plenty deserving of a FAQ entry. People should flag the OP for FAQ!

So, in searching for an answer for this, because I like to build things when I'm bored, I realized that after all this time, this still never got a proper answer (at least in regards to this feat). However, i did come across this in the ACG:

Divine Hunter wrote:

Otherworldly Companion (Su)

At 3rd level, a hunter’s companion takes on otherworldly features. If the divine hunter is good (or worships a good deity), the animal companion gains the celestial template. If the hunter is evil (or worships an evil deity), the animal companion gains the fiendish template. If the hunter is neutral and worships a neutral deity, she must choose either the celestial or fiendish template; once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. The companion’s CR is considered to be equal to its Hit Dice for the purpose of the celestial or fiendish template.

This ability replaces hunter tactics.

A clarification in a near identical ability to the feat - seems enough to rule that an answer to my - odd that they came up with that clarification many years later while writing the ACG Errata, yet never bothered to extend it to the ARG in FAQ or even the ARG ERRATA that came out the same week as the ACG errata did.

I'll definitely stick to SR = 5 + HD going forward though.
